- In this video I get to do what I have been waiting for all year, we harvest the seeds of the wild edible, Plantain plant, dry, winnow and then grind into a flour like substance and then take part of it and make Plantain Peanut Butter. I think we will make bannock with the rest this winter, I hope you like the video it was really fun and educational to make. It is said that plantain seeds have the same ingredients as laxatives but we saw no ill effects.
Love plantain. It has so many uses. Did you know that the Native Americans called it "white man's foot print", because it was not here before the settlers came. It seemed that every where a white man stepped, plantain grew. Great videos!
Love it. We used to make a plantain seed tea with honey for dry cough, in Armenia. My kids grew up all natural and organic.
Love plantain it's a brilliant plant.
Very cool Joe, will have to try it.
Awesome, look'n forward to try'n to make a batch! Keep up the great & informative vids!
Amazing. I wish I could write all this down in my notes as well as you explain it in your vids. Thank you for these great videos
great video and demo Joe
a coffee grinder would be perfect 4 this-type of grinding-you would love it!
you should try roasting the seeds before grinding them, just quickly in a dry skillet. that would help with the green taste maybe.
great useful info!! loads of fun to watch and learn-i usually look at these type of plants for medicinal value definitely need to bump up my game :) thanks again!!
good one guys
Cool, I didn't know Tom Brown had that book out, I'll have to look for it. I've got the "Wilderness Survival - Field Guide" that he put out and just love it. Thanks for sharing. Take Care :-))
Something I've seen on tv, Dual Survival. When they picked acorns to eat, the one guy ground them up first. Shell and all. Then using some sort of container and water, he floated the shell to end up with only the nut meat. Now with these seeds, will they float or sink? My thinking is if the seed sinks and the chaff floats, maybe it would be easier to separate the chaff out. Separate before drying. Or is that what the parching and winnowing is?
It is my understanding that the pantian seeds, when mixed with water, are mucilaginous, like chia seeds. so mixing them with water might work, but would change the effect. they can supposdly be used as an egg substitute in baking, when mixed with water like Chia seeds
@JoeandZachSurvival
ok so the lineoleic acid. im just wondering what it wouldnt emulsify itself without the added butter is what im thinking. we have to get you a grinder
Feed to kids& see wat happens..i love it HAHAA atleast it`s something mostly natural :)
By looks on your faces I think I would put this stuff in the medicine shelf..lol..lol Joe what are the names of some of your other books you use for wild plants? Just give me your favs!
So....the verdict? Would you do this again using the same tools you had, or are you going to try and use a grinder for a smoother consistency? I'm going to make the salve. It looks pretty simple. This was my first video I watched of yours. Well, the first was your frying the plantains. Did you like them fried better than the peanut butter?
What book do you use to tell you all of this because I need it
The husks are psyllium husks.. used in cooking and as a laxative.
i know i know, im a pain in the ass. joe, does this seed have a high oil content?
there is a difference between an emulsion and a dispersion. check it out
Too bad you don't drink coffee. A coffee grinder would have made short work of that.
Nice video but really too labor intensive I think, especially if there are other options.
yeah - I wish I had watched this process and another video - winnowing out the chaff is time consuming - before I let the weeds grow in my yard and set seed lol
@zehnsechz i mean grain mill
If I pick them while they're green,will they brown up in the bowl?
I am not sure.
Thanks for your reply. Sounds like an experiment,haha.
