  • The video needs at least 720p imo. You can change the quality by clicking on the tooth wheel button. My all time favorite. The recognizable intro, the catchy lyrics in the chorus and the excitement of the dynamics in the solo: fabulous. Quo's EP to celebrate their 13 years of existence.

The song was published in 1973 as part of the album Hello and in 1977 as part of their LIVE album. In 1975 a live EP was released to commemorate the bands 13th anniversary.
Roll over lay down was the on the A-side. The song received massive airplay, so I bought the EP. With Junior´s Wailing (1970 Dog Of Two Head) and Gerdundula (1971 Ma Kelly´s Greasy Spoon) on the B-side.
This was my only record of the band for years. By the end of the Nineties I bought the LIVE album.
For some reason I can´t explain I never wanted to buy a regular album.

Francis and Rick started taking a lot of drugs like cocaine and that affected their individual mentality.
Alan said in a long interview, that Francis wanted to control the Band.
Francis got Pip Williams to Produce RAOTWorld in 1977, without consulting the Band.
Francis had secret ambitions to move the Band in a different direction musically.
This became more prevalent in 1982 and 1983 by which time Alan was only just hanging on.
In Alan's long interview he said it would have cost him too much in legal fees to fight for his rights.
All through the Band's existence there were songs that Alan had written, yet the Record Company and Francis decided that Alan wouldn't sing.
This came to a head on the Back to Back album.
Plus, as any real QUO supporter knows, Francis loves Country music, and that's OK, as long as he did it under his own name.
Both Francis and myself have a passion for 'Already Gone ' by The Eagles, however that is a Country Rock song and to me it's a very cool tune.
However, ' Marguerita Time' is a disgusting and revolting tune which Francis insisted on recording and releasing under the banner of Status Quo.
Alan said that it was too embarrassing for him to be associated with and he left the Band that he formed in 1962.
There were other serious issues that affected Alan which were weighing heavily upon him.
There were royalty issues and poor management problems which were either out of his control or too expensive to fight.
'Marguerita Time' was the straw that broke Alan's back.
Unfortunately, Alan lost the part of the court case whereby Rossi and Parfitt were allowed to keep the Band name.
After all, it was Alan's Band.
Selfishly on my behalf, I and my mates got to see Alan in his various Hard Rock Bands in Sydney, Australia.
He was so cool, that he hung out with the crowd after the gigs.
I hung out with him quite a few times, had a smoke and a beer with him at several pub venues.
Lancaster and Coghlan were QUO's engine room.
Rossi's megalomania is why I call him THE ANTI-QUO, for destroying OUR Band.

Stephen, you are right, it does not matter. It's 42 years ago this month they played this, can you believe it?
      Nice story:
In the Netherlands (where I live), Dutch radio broadcasts the Top2000 in the last week of the year from Boxing Day until New Year's Eve. It's a tradition since 1999. 7 days long around the clock, the 2000 best songs are played, as voted by ten thousands of enthousiast Dutch voters.
During the broadcast, there is a life café/bar in which hundreds of people gather to join the DJ's. In last December's edition, the DJ jumped straight into the headbanging crowd after announcing Roll Over Lay Down. When the song was finished, you could hear on the radio the DJ was out of his breath, so much he enjoyed.
      Long live the Quo!

In 1977 Aliens abducted the real Rossi and replaced him with the one we don't like.
In fact, that's the part they left out of the movie 'This Is Spinal Tap'.
However, regarding the different 'tone' from their Guitars and amps, I'm surprised that Rick didn't point out to Rossi that it sounded very different.
"No, don't rock the boat Rick, just go along with Alien Rossi."
" Parfitt, if you wanna stay in 'my' band you'll keep your mouth shut, awright? "
" I can do this on my own, I don't need Coghlan and Lancaster or you, for that matter!! "
" I'm a power ( coke snortin' ) control freak, I'm gonna destroy the Greatest Rock band of all time!!! "
What's with the white socks anyway, Alien Rossi wears white socks with all his clothes.
I personally still dress like a 19 year old Rocker, T-shirt, blue denim jeans, trainers or boots.
" and now for something completely different, a man with 3 buttocks "

    • @hey1908
      @hey1908 2 года назад +1

With all my respect, but I think that's only half of the story. Francis was a full blown coke addict by the early 80's and certainly could be considered a control freak.
John was tired of the band and decided to quit because certain parts of the album they were recording (1+9+8+2, in Switzerland if I remember correctly) had been replaced with a drum machine because he just wasn't showing up to the recording sessions.
Rick was also spiralling out of control living the so-called "rock-'n'-roll lifestyle". Parties, sports cars, women and drugs. Rick desperately wanted to keep the band together and took sides with Rossi.
Now what you didn't mention about Alan was the others point of view of him. Alan apparently could be very violent and was obsessed with the idea of having a "macho-man hard rock band". That's completely fine, but when you are in a band you need to give and take. Alan was not simply taking it. Both Alan and Francis had completely different objectives when it came to Status Quo and Francis ended up winning, simply because he was the most prolific writer in the band. Let's be honest, if it hadn't been for Rossi Quo wouldn'tve been able to keep the album-per-year ratio they had had going since 1968. Neither Rick or Alan produced as many songs as Francis (regardless of their quality).
Obviously, none of this means that any of the boys were bad people, they were just normal humans who were under a huge amount of stress.
Having said that, I also wanted to point out that Quo has never been OUR band. It was their band and we are only part of it on the receiving end. The Quo army is a huge community but ultimately it all comes down to what 4 or 5 guys decide. At least in my case, as a loyal follower of this band, I try to appreciate everything they ever produce, no matter what style or what line-up its coming from. They obviously have their ups and their downs but it's still Quo nonetheless.
Think of it as a football team, the players change over the years but the team remains the same, and even though you might have started to idolise one of the players you need to understand that you are a supporter for the team, above all.
I idolised (still do) Rick, but now I need to accept that whatever Quo puts out in the following years will never have Rick there anymore. I am a fan of Rick, but above that, I am a fan of the band with which he achieved what he achieved; Status Quo.
And here I am writing this comment with my "Liberty Lane" t-shirt, because even though "Backbone" is no "Piledriver" or "Quo", it's something my favourite band has produced and I respect it.
      Cheers

many old school quo fans feel the same . if rossi wanted to go zero credibility cheesy pop , fine thats his call but to do it under the quo name was sacrilege . though by his own admission hes a breadhead so he wasnt about to lose the brand . though in fairness to rossi it was rick who restarted it bringing in jeff and rhino from his solo project . rick didnt have the confidence to go it alone or tell francis to shove it ,so he went with it with some regrets later on .. i think it was all over really anyway no matter what , that atmosphere of serious 70s rootsy rock was waning and everyone was selling out a la phil collins . production was changing . drum machines synths reverb drenched . but those classic albums from dog to blue for you . well it was just magical . why rossi is in denial of that is baffling . its like elton john saying captain fastastic and goodbye yellow brick road were shit . or rod stewart saying his crooning shite is better than the faces .. in 1974 when we all enjoying their peak who would have thought rossi would turn into a tasteless cheesy pop merchant . you just would not have seen it coming . i personally find most of post ff quite revolting . theres just one song on rossis live tour . rolling down the road .that i think sounds credible . in the army makes me want to quite literally puke .

I appreciate your comments and agree with most of what you've said, though I think they should've modified the name of the Band after Alan left.
You can't deny that "Marguerita Time" is a horrible song and doesn't represent The Status Quo image or brand.
The debate could go on forever and never be resolved, yet the current line-up is a very poor and pale imitation of the Status Quo I know and love.
The Cabaret QUO are creepy and embarrassing and insulting.

    • @hey1908
      @hey1908 7 месяцев назад +1

@@alanstrom2221 The thing is I don't think the current Quo are trying to imitate the old Quo. You can't deny that the current lineup is just as professional as all the other iterations of the band, though it may no longer have that special something the frantic four had. To be honest with you, I'd find it creepier if the Quo were still living out of their 70's image to this day. I don't really fancy going to watch some old geezers wearing flared jeans and with a shrine on each side of the stage dedicated to Alan and Rick.
I think the band has aged quite gracefully, unlike other acts such as Guns and Roses for example. They're not trying to fool anyone by impersonating the frantic four, they've moved on as everyone should do. That, however, doesn't mean we must forget the FF and all it stood for. We should appreciate them, idolise them if we want to and accept that they're no longer around, even though the Quo machine has kept on chugging down the line.

I appreciate parts of what you've said here and disagree strongly with other parts.
A fair amount of the post Coghlan/Lancaster material has been woeful and
      embarrassing.
They came back fairly strong from 2002 onwards.

It's not the best Quo, it's not a proper Quo, it's the only Quo - FF Status Quo...

Where's the synth version of 4500 Times from?

Compared to recent live versions, this is simply fantastic. Nowadays Rossi keeps ruining his solo with unpleasant noises. Also, this means that I was right: The complete EP was included on the "On the Level" remaster. But where does the "Roadhouse Blues" live version come from?

I also find the introduction of giving ANdy Bowns piano a more central role takes away the grunt of their sound. I find it really annoying, and do they really need them? It obviously started round Rocking all over the world. Other annoyances were the strong piano on Caroline, PLUS I hate the cheesy Keyboard intro of Pictures of Matchstick Men before each gig. Bring back Juniors Wailing - AND NO PIANO NEEDED

teej modern Rossi: all distortion, fat humbuckers, no tone. Dreadful.
Not that Parfitts part sounds that much better. It's just too much.

Too right. Also the changeover from 76-77 from that awesome cool mismatched amp rig of Sound City, Voxs and Marshalls to the all Vox rig at that time was a bad move soundwise.
