About this video: On January 12, 2024, I made a quick stop at the Exeter, NH Amtrak station as there were 2 trains in the area. First was Maine-bound Amtrak Downeaster train 685 with a total of 3 locomotives - a P42DC on the head end as well as an F40PH-NPCU and P42DC double-header on the rear. After Amtrak cleared town, CSX local L080 departed from the siding one town to the north and roared through Exeter with 3 ex-Pan Am Railways GEs leading a relatively short manifest train.
Sweeeet! I saw that double header leading in Exeter on 1/10/24. It was a cool one!
Yeah for sure! Seems like we had a few months where there was almost always a doubleheader of some sort on at least one of the Downeaster sets

Why did Amtrak 685 have 3 locomotives? Usually there’s a NPCU at the head end and a P42 providing power from the back on most Downeaster sets. Sometimes there’s P42s on both ends in rare occasions.
Extra P42 on the back was covering the NPCU due to a problem with it I hear
