Rail Spike Productions is the home of unique railroad videography, primarily from around the Northeastern USA. My name is Nate and I do my best to find and document tons of interesting and unusual trains that are not seen by many others. I am normally able to post new videos 2 or 3 times each week. All content posted on this channel belongs to me and may not be used without my consent. My photography can be viewed on Instagram on @rail_spike_productions, which is linked below. I hope you enjoy my content as much as I enjoy making it.

Nice video excellent my friends like 👍🏻 and Greeting 🙋🏻♂️
The ctc-4s, btc-4s, btc-1bs, ctc-5s, btc-1as, btc-4as, btc-4bs and btc-1cs don’t have restrooms why? Every coach should have one. Is it that cab cars never have a restroom because they have an operators cabin near where the bathroom would be at the front? The ctc-3s had restrooms and they were cab cars, I don’t understand.
1:49, there are two rare coaches: a first class coach (514) and ski car (219) which runs on the MBTA’s Wachusett Ski Train to Wachusett Mountain on the Fitchburg Line. Surprisingly I’ve seen that coach (514) on the CapeFLYER a couple of times.
Screw the old equipment, we need to get the new rotems to the north. The south always get the new and good looking equipment, while the north we’re stuck with one non-rebuilt 900-series k car on a trainset. Which are dirty and have windows that are all scratched up as well as the windows having years of ultraviolet clouding on them from the sun. Also, sorry about the harsh language. But, we really need to get the new equipment up here.
Great video.
Thank you
If this were 1890, there would be a pair of cross compound 2 8 0 s pulling a 600 ton train
Great scene ! No doubt the P32 on the point with extra cars had joined the Cardinal at Indianapolis with those cars having received attention at Beech Grove ?
Thanks ! And yes, that would be my guess as well
Metra’s f40phm locomotives look fancy and not look like they were manufactured in the mid 1990s with that new paint scheme. Nice train action in Chicago. 👍
Indeed they do!
I like Amtrak’s Dash 8 units. They had a previous paint scheme that earned them the nickname “Pepsi Cans”. What made you go all the way to Chicago? I’m curious. You like the trains down there?
We’ve got family out there! But I must say, the trains were quite a good reason to be out there as well. I’ve probably got 10 separate posts coming up because of this trip 😂
I enjoyed the video and I like your profile picture of a freshly cleaned refurbished gp40 1117 😊
Glad to hear it, and thanks !
@@rail_spike_productions u are very welcome
1134 needs rebuild, lol. 😅
1054 and 1068 seem to be the two most unreliable 3Cs in my opinion. I’m sure there’s more, but those two seem to be breaking down every other day. The 1068 died at ruggles on train 816 on the morning of 01/26/2022. Also, the 1051 test extra had to rescue it.
Wow! That’s a very great catch!
Somebody spray painted “Keolis sucks” on the back top of Locomotive 1135, did anybody else see that at 1:16?
I actually didn’t notice that, good catch 😂
Behind dharma uveitis nights always always happened when the black one was made known about kids movie 🎥 trains 🚂 one time 😅
7:25, What happened? I see 3C 1075 has a small dent on its nose just below the headlight.
I’m pretty sure that was a result of hitting a tree
Mbta should really consider getting chargers? A dual-mode variant like metro-north’s sc-42dms. I’m still wondering if the hsp46s were a mistake given all of their reliability problems in recent years, Lol. I wonder if my term of unreliability is correct?
Yeah, they sure can be problematic. I’ve got lots of videos on here of them being rescued
I saw a video of #2006 being rescued in rockport by gatx gp38-2 #2635 and coupled to ctc-1b #1637 as the cab car to tow the set back to bet with dead hsp #2006 in the rear. It was dead on the platform. This happened back in 2019. It was uploaded by Boston By Rails.
Yeah I remember that day. I was out there too, just not at the right time for that train
Wow, I wish I could’ve seen it. What was your thought of that day? Also, what was your thought of the hsp being rescued?
It certainly still happens every now and then. One of the most problematic HSPs in recent times has been the 2002
Why were 855, 1837 and 1840 on the middleboro extra equipment move? Was this for their testing?
They had already been in revenue service prior to that move. They were returning to Rochester for reasons that I’m unaware of
Train track
That train is very nice
My favorite of all of the Crossings in the video is the East Cabot St. Crossing, the one with the Crossing Tender. That's my 3rd favorite Rail-Road Crossing overall. I was annoyed though when I rail fanned there back in late March 2023, that both Trains did not have any Double Decker Coaches. I'm glad that they got rid of the Single Level Cab Cars last month so now each Train has at least one Double Decker Coach, Sooner or later, I'm going to go back to that crossing and record a new video.
I as well like that crossing. It has unique feature compared to other local crossings
lol the dog barking at essex street 💀
Yup, gotta love it haha
The cursed gp40s, lol. 1131 and 1135 should both be rebuilt. The 1136 is rebuilt but still having problems, “Way to go Rochester”.
1131 and 1135 both happen to be at Rochester now
Will they be massdot blues or in the lightning bolt scheme like 1117 and 1138?
I don’t think massDOT paid for any more rebuilds, so chances are they’ll be in the same scheme as the 1117 and 1138 unless another agreement can me made in regards to a heritage paint like the 1129.
I had no idea the 1129 was now a heritage unit. Why did they do that? Heritage units are mostly black.
Most heritage units that I’ve seen are not black. Heritage locomotives are engines that wear past paint schemes and have nothing to do with particular colors
The 1135 sounded like it wasn’t even on or was the 2017 rescuing it at 8:53? Sorry if I’m asking, I’m confused. Because it was a doubleheader.
1135 was there for extra power for the polar express set. Turns out they didn’t really need it haha
Mbta was like “O let’s just add 1135 to the set because the 2017 might need assistance and they didn’t need it”, lol. 😅 MBTA’s just lazy, in my opinion and they’re always full of rare and silly surprises also. The 2017 sounded just fine. Hope you can understand me.
Only 23 1700s are active now since 1718 is out of service from a collision and I bet it’ll be out of operation for over a year. Hope it’ll be repaired and not scrapped. It reminds me of 1710 which was involved in a sideswipe with an excavator on the Franklin Line on October 17, 2006. The excavator wasn’t sturdy on its trucks and tipped over off of them and struck 1710 on its side. The car was sent to Kawasaki Rail Car in Yonkers for repairs in fall 2007 and arrived back the following year. In May 2011, the car was considered damaged beyond repair with one side covered in blue, sad. 😢😢 In October 2013, 1710 along with 511, 1525 and 612 were one step closer to going bye-bye forever. By the afternoon of April 23, 2014, the 511, 1525, 612 and 1710 were all gone in existence and never to be seen again. The excavator was doing some track work on the line at the time of the accident. Luckily this one will be repaired and not scrapped, only minor damage reported, thank god. I can’t bear to lose another 1700.
Awesome video I might have to check out some of these spots.
Thank you - there are certainly some nice spots
MBTA is always full of surprises, from double-drafts, to equipment moves, triple-drifts and to rescuing passenger trains such as Amtrak.
It’s crazy how there’s so many quiet zones.
Excellent video my friends
Thank you !
Sick!
Thanks very much!! Glad you were able to see it
Oooo
Engine sounding like a GP-40 😮😮😮😮😮
An all MBB consist on the north side is rare, nice catch. 😊 Nice catch of 1528 also. 👍
Yes! It was a beautiful set. And thank you
What was 145 doing in Boston? Rare to see that heritage unit come down here.
11:08, Waaa, I miss that horn. 1628’s horn is a blessing to listen to.
Love 1723’s horn. Its horn is probably one of the decent ones on the k cars.
Great video and good variety of locos. Since you made this video last April, I understand that all MBTA trains out of North station now have bi-level cab-control cars ?😊
Thank you - and yes (pardon my backlog of uploads), you are correct about the bi-level control cars
Very excited for the new rotems and for the old ones to go back north.
The only thing that happened is that, we no longer have 1718 with us , so it’s getting repaired, but it’s horn is very nice
Indeed - the 1718 is the one that hit a car in Beverly a few months back
@@rail_spike_productions I know 👍🏽, but it might take a year to get repaired 🙁
I think I saw it readville yard
@@samstranghorwitz Really, that’s good, I think it’s just it needs a new plow and then it’s all set to go
Excellent video my friends awesome like 👍🏻 Greeting 👋🏻
1054 sounds a little like an HSP to me. If I compared 1054 to an HSP, they would both sound very similar.
Wait, 1129 has been refurbished for this year’s rail fan day in the Cape. I had no idea. Sad I didn’t know a head of time.
Cape Cod railfans day isn’t for another month, there’s still plenty of time to see it
Wow, that train at 11:48 was flying, OMG. 😮
Indeed it was. That’s about the fastest they can go on the Gloucester branch
11:17, nice horn from 1630. Too bad it’s already gone. Going to miss the horns from the CTC-1Bs. They had great horns, for sure.
I’m excited to see MBTA finally getting new trains since it hasn’t upgraded its commuter rail equipment since the 1970s, that’s like almost 50 years. But, I’m sad to see the single-level coaches go.
idc what other people say i kinda like 1711s horn
I don’t mind it, but I’m not much of a horn critique myself
That was an amazing video I heard that Geep 1129 has been refurbished and is going to be at Cape Cod rail fan day in August saw a Pic yesterday it looks nice
Very glad you enjoyed. I’m glad everyone is enjoying the 1129 so far, the paint scheme has been worked on for quite some time
@@rail_spike_productions u are very welcome
It has a e bell right
Nice video, sad seeing the flats go. Also excited for the new bilevels and the future or the Mbta Commuter rail.
Thanks very much, and I agree with you on both aspects
Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." - John F. Kennedy
MBTA really needs to consider extending to NH and Maine, but I know that’s probably still way far in the future. Rare to see an MBTA locomotive providing power for a Amtrak Downeaster train all the way to Maine. GP40 1137 to the rescue. 😊 This proves it can do just about anything, hard worker for such an old engine.
So, 2028’s 6-car set connected to the 4-car set and towed it back to Boston as a double draft, I’m all confused? 🤔
Yes, that’s correct. I put some more details in a comment from around 5 months ago if you’d like some more info
