    My adopted Chinese name is 白志宁. I chose 白 because it starts with a "b" sound and although I found some other names closer in pronunciation to my surname on the hundred names list, my teacher at the time said that they weren't used as surnames now, so this would confuse people. For my given name, I chose 志宁 as I like the meaning and I wanted something that starts with a "j" or "zh" sound. Rather interestingly, one of my fellow classmates (in a class of seven people) also wanted to choose this name, but I was the first to complete my homework that week (choosing our own Chinese names if we didn't have them already so we could practice "spelling" them to our classmates), so my classmate now has a different Chinese name.

    I chose 郝 as it is similar to my English surname. I've used 旭 as I think the character itself is beautiful and I like the meaning - brilliance of the rising sun.

    Hi: what an interesting point of departure! Indeed, when I taught English, I'd always find an equivalent in English just so native speakers could remember and pronounce the name - otherwise, the person would never be accepted and recognized by them. Hence, I can imagine how my name might be equally off putting. So I'd be interested in something that would be recognisable and sympathetic to native Chinese speakers. So let's see if you can help me...

    My parents gave me 林志杰 at birth
    But I when changed my english name from Jack to John, so I decided it would be relevant to change my Chinese name as well to 林至傑
    It's pronounced the same and carries nearly the same meaning...which is kind of parallel to the names of Jack and John having the same meaning.
    That being said, I think it would be interesting if you would do a video about the different types of names in Chinese: Courtesy Names, Artistic Names, Posthumous names, etc.
    I've read up on them because I have an interest in my cultural history, but as an ABC I don't get sufficient insight to the how/why of these names.
    I just remember being very confused when reading about historical figures who are referenced by multiple names. Stuff like 曹操 (Cao Cao) having a courtesy name of 孟德 (Meng de) was very confusing to me when I went through Ro3K. I was also confused by Bruce Lee, because his actual name is 李振藩 (Lee Jun Fan), but he goes by 李小龍 (Lee Xiao Long). Would that be considered a Courtesy Name or a Stage/Art name?

    • @chrisbach1533
      @chrisbach1533 11 месяцев назад

      Speaking about confusions: I realized many people have a tendency to ignore hyphens all together. So if you want to be sure, spell the name (like Bruce Lee's chinese name 李振藩) either Junfan or JunFan, no space, no hyphen, and anyone will understand its one name.
      Jun-Fan could look for western ppl like a double-barrelled given name (like Anna-Marie). And Jun Fan looks like two seperate names. If a westerner reads Jun Fan Lee, he will think Fan is a middle name and only Jun the given name.
      Junfan or JunFan makes 100% clear its one name.

    My Chinese name is 蔡尤雅 (family name: Cai/Chua).. Historically, Chinese-Indonesians were not allowed to have Chinese name officially due to the New Order Era. Therefore, we have to use non-Chinese names. Since many still want to use the Chinese family name for the last name, we would have to modify our name so it doesn't sound "Chinese". For example: 'Chua' will be modified into Chuaniago, Chuadri, Chuarsa..etc.. 'Tan' will be modified into Tanadi, Tanuwijaya, Tandri, etc. "Wong" will be modified into Wongso, Wongsonegoro, etc. 'Lim' will be modified into Limarta, Limasi, Halim, Salim, etc...and many more.

    I don't like my given English name and I don't have a Chinese teacher to give me a name. So I chose a name based off of my favorite historical figure and my favorite fictional character. The result is 甘 Qīngqīng. But I don't know if Qīngqīng should be spelled 青青 or 晴晴. I'm really not 100% sure as I've seen it spelled both ways. So I'm confused. Lol. I have a name that is hard for most Americans to spell and pronounce (I'm American too), and when I studied Chinese my teacher gave me the name 羅卉思. It took me like a semester to learn how to write it. Then I moved to mainland China, where it's 罗卉思, but come to find out tons of people either don't know how to read or write the middle character, even though it's so simple! It seems like it's my destiny to have a hard to write or pronounce name.
    (I have a bank account that ended up being for "罗奔思," got X-rays at the hospital for "罗寒思" ... the list goes on ...)

    我姓蔡,以前父母取中文名叫 蔡约书亚,直接从我英文名音译,个人觉得不好听 很不喜欢。后来,中文老师帮我取名叫 蔡青峰,很好听而且很喜欢,到现在都用这个名。
    我20岁生日那天,我又给自己取个字叫 皓泽, 后来就变我的网名了😝 皓是洁白的意思 希望自己能保持内心的纯洁。泽呢 是来自动漫的情境,主角他迷失了自我 然后最终在一个沼泽里头可以找回自我,所以我希望自己也能找回自我 不忘初心。而且“青峰”和“皓泽”刚好对应一个颜色和一个风景,就很奈斯😝
