Sound artist Nikki Lindt on recording a hidden universe

- Nikki Lindt employs microphones and a deep-rooted curiosity to record sounds in environments usually unseen - underground, inside trees and beneath water - in order to capture their mystery and sonic power. Correspondent Serena Altschul talks with Lindt about her fascination with finding subterranean resonance, and participates in a "Sound Walk" at Brooklyn's Prospect Park, where Lindt's recordings are featured.

This reminds me a bit of the work of Emory Cook from 70 years ago. An early stereo pioneer, he recorded "Surf Textures", "Voice of the Storm", and "Out of this World" in which he captured eerie ionospheric disturbances and sped up the sounds of earthquakes so we could hear them. It was a strikingly organic process.
From one of his records, "Motion of the phonograph arm is not necessarily identical with original earth motion, is more than occurred at Pasadena; however motion originated from direct amplification of original tape signals. Any audible sound here will be from the skipping of grooves by the arm and cartridge" and "Skipping is intentional and indigenous to the nature of the subject matter."

That's so cool
This is incredible, and important. I’m a flutist and I get it. I’d never thought about subterranean sounds, but of course! If I can find a small microphone with wireless capabilities, I’d like to record the sounds in a couple of bunny burrows in my front garden; in my hydrangea bush (lots of birdsong for sure); in my vegetable garden. Certainly people talking, because the garden is quite near or neighbor’s driveway, but perhaps I’ll hear other things, too. Perhaps the sound of my flute or practice chanter playing ~ transmitted from inside my house through our windows. Any suggestions re tiny microphones?? Ty.
