  • "The Wreck of the Old 97" is a classic American ballad that recounts the story of the wreck of a Southern Railway mail train, known as the Fast Mail, on September 27, 1903. The train derailed at Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of eleven people, including the train's engineer, Joseph A. ("Steve") Broadey.
One of the earliest and most famous recordings was by Vernon Dalhart in 1924. His version was extremely popular and is often credited with helping to establish country music as a commercial genre.
