John Denver was my best friend’s favorite artist. I was also a 70’s kid (born 1960). I always loved this song. All we worried about then were gas prices and nuclear war. Racism was rampant, the middle class was shrinking. Hmmm…not much changes. Except that we never felt like we were going to lose our country, we weren’t worried about being shot going to the store or for wearing a mask. We weren’t worried about all of our loved ones dying in a pandemic…I just lost what was left of my family last year. I miss those carefree days too, because we felt like we could handle anything that was thrown at us. Not anymore. Things are out of control.

We always seem to have to put aside some kind of character flaw in those we admire, but then again, so must others, in regards to ourselves. I didn't grow up with him. This is more folk than country. I loved this song as a child. He was before my time and died when I was three in 1997. This is one of my favorites by him. He only wrote the chorus to this song though.
