- Sometimes my eldest daughter brings me laminated pieces of wood from California. These are usually rejected pieces from a craftsman that mostly makes cutting boards and bookends. The initial pieces was 5/4 = 1 1/4 inch = 3 cm thick.
Beautiful platter! Proof that no wood is waste!
Howdy Michael! Thank you for the comment. Cheers
HI to you Mr Mendez, You inspired me to try turning a platter myself. Thank you for your great work.
Howdy Paul! Yes, give it a go.Cheers.
Love your technique on this platter. I am a novice wood turner and I have made a few bowls, but my daughter says she wants a platter for Christmas. Thank you for sharing yours and i will now attempt one myself.
Howdy Woower! It just takes practice and patients. You can do it and better. Cheers.
Thanks for the video on the platter.... I know it has been three years ago, but I just started turning last year at the age of 65... So I do appreciate your details on the progression on the platter... Don't worry about your videos... they are just fine....
Howdy Randy! You are just a couple of years younger than me. Woodturning is fun and can be very relaxing. It just takes a while to get comfortable with the machine and the tools. There a lot of good videos on RUclips. Thanks for watching and enjoy! Cheers
Attention to the detail - I like that. It was pleasure watching this video.
Thanks for the video Cip and especially for the talking which can be a really vital part sometimes. I've just taken my first tentative steps into wood turning this week and would be thrilled to bits to make a plate as bonny as you made here.

Just started following you. You explain things very well. Very helpful! Thanks.
Thanks Jeff! I am glad you find my videos useful. Thanks for watching.
Just discovered this video tonight. I am an amateur carpenter (have made a couple of tables), and refurbisher, so I am enthralled by this! Have subscribed and cannot wait for more videos! You are extremely skilled, and your family must be so proud! Keep up the good work :)
Great video. Have now returned to plate turning. Seeing your plate, makes it all more interesting. Great job.. Will be sure to follow your work
Thanks Postalbob
Great video on making the platter. It will be my next project . Thanks for posting your work.
I'm just getting started at turning and your video was a big help. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this Cip. Very instructional with a beautiful product.
Nice player thanks for the info.
Hey there TJ! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Cheers
The wood looks so cool and so smooth
Greeting Rafael! Thank you for watching my videos. Making the plate smooth is the hard part of this type of project. The clear high gloss polyurethane bring out the color and beauty of the wood. Cheers.
Hello from Ukraine! Great work!! You have perfect hands if you can do such a work)))
+Kornienko Nikita Vladyslavovych Hello Kornienko. Thank you so much for watch the video. I like to travel but I have not been to the Ukraine, but maybe someday. Cheeers
Thanks for another great videl Cip - I appreciate your time and effort.
Hello Phil,Thanks for watching. It is fun doing these videos and good hearing from you.Cheerio, Cip
Thanks for the video took it on as my 1st project on a new lathe.
Turned out pretty well .
Thanks KEN
Cip - very nice work! I've made several platters from factory-second cutting boards - they are a good (and relatively inexpensive) sources of large blanks. The satin poly finish looks good.
Hello Louie,
It has been warn here. I applied the varnish in the shop and set it in the sun to dry. The sun makes the varnish stretch tight and dry hard. The wood needs to be well sealed. Trapped vapor can cause bubbles.
Cheers, Cip
A great way to recycle a nice piece of wood. Very nice work.
Best regards.......Bill
Hello William,
Thanks fro sharing my video.
Cip
Hallo Cip's, schöne Arbeit! Die Reihenfolge der Hölzer finde ich für ein Holz Teller gelungen. Danke für den Beitrag!

Thank You Cip!! Beautiful plate.
Nice bit of wood and a nice bit of work well done 👏
Howdy Michael! Thanks, cheers.
Hi Sir , i am a new woodturner , i discovered woodturning through Mike waldt , and still have fun in that .. i like your explanation about turning segmented Bowls , in moment i am working on the same project ... the most what i like in zour vedios is that zou used centimeters and not inches in your mesures , its more clear for me :)...ty so muchg for sharing us your knowlege
Thank you Dein! I am always glad to hear my videos are useful to you. I try to use mm and inches. Mike Walt is one of my favorite woodturners. Cheers
Beautiful work. A lathe is the one thing my shop is missing, unfortunately. You got a new sub here.
+Sean Boldick Thank you so much for subscribing, Sean. I hope you enjoy my other videos.
+Sean Boldick i got a lathe for sale
Hi Cip, enjoyed your video, Thanks
+Peter Pihos Hello Peter! Glad you enjoyed the video and Thanks for watching. Cheers
Great video Cip:
Thanks for sharing. Regards Harry
Hello Harry,Thanks for watching. Always good hearing from you.Regards, Cip
Another very nice video, Cip! I wish I had some blanks like that. I'd love to try turning a plate, which I've not done before. Come to the next woodturner's meeting and see my bowl that I managed to re-finish from last month. I got some great advice from you and others and I sanded it and reapplied more coats of sanding sealer and then applied a friction finish. It looks much better now. I'm also going to bring a quite striking vase (with a cap!) that I turned from mesquite and another vase from wormy mesquite, and yet another large lidded box turned from "mystery wood." I found a log in an are where they're clearing some property, so it has to be wood native to San Antonio, but I don't recognize what it is. Maybe someone will recognize it. I hope to see you at the next meeting!
+Rick Hilton Sounds good. That is the way to do it. I have found so many good timbers laying by the road. I am planning to be at the next meeting. The room has been nearly full. See you there!
+Cip's Wood Chips See you at the next meeting, Cip!
great project, nice platter
Thanks for watching.
Cip

Thanks Mike,I appreciate your comments. At times it seems like a lot of work, but it is fun.Cheers, Cip
Absolutely beautiflul, sure wish I could find cutoffs like that. Nice video
+Maryke Dykhuizen Thank you Maryke! Yes, finding good wood is often a problem to me too. Cheers
Great presentation and results, thanks for sharing
Thank you Cip for this video.
You turned this laminated blank into a wonderful plate.
Like you mentioned in your intro, the hardest part of making videos is standing in front of a camera, talking to this black, round hole staring at you.
In respond every comment is worth more than gold, as you get the needed feedback for all the things you're making. Other than just showing a process, I think we woodworker also want to add this little personal detail to our videos, because as there are so many different personalities, there are as many different ways to approach a similar goal. (Hope I got this understandable in a way, difficult to write in a foreign language sometimes).
Keep on making your videos the way you feel most comfortable with.
Greetings from Good Old Germany
Peter
Danke Peter,
I enjoy your videos greatly. My wife is of German decent. We hope to visit your fine country later this year.
Take care of yourself, Cip
Really nice platter Cip - being a fellow DVR-XP lathe owner, I think I'll have a go at this project....
Hey Phil,
I really love my Nova DVR-XP. I still have my Nova 1624-44. I enjoy it and use it regularly.
I'm a new subscriber....Clip...love your video,s....love the way you explain everything...the tools you use and the R.P.M.you use...I'm new a wood turning...I can tell you used to teach class....safety first ..thx again.
Howdy Stuart! That is very observant of you. Yes, I taught in high school. I too was a beginner and always wanted to know which tool and what speed. Also, junior high woodshop was my favorite all time class, safety was a top concern. Kind Regards....
Good tutorial, DVR is a smooth running lathe, makes it look so easy!
+Tass Ali I greatly enjoy the DVR. Thank you for watching.
Very nice, thanks for sharing, Dave
great looking platter
Hi! Peter,Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment.Cheers, Cip
Really interesting stock! During the video I was thinking back to your segmented piece and was thinking how wild it would be to turn a bowl using this stock but on the segmented plan that you showed not so long ago.
Hello Earl,
That would be wild. I am planning on doing another one soon. Probable cherry and walnut, maybe oak. The maple in this platter was much softer than the other wood.
Cheers, Cip
Lol your pillow has the same pattern as your platter at 22:54 ;D
Gorgeous work
Take Care, David
wambounet What can I say! Matchy - Matchy.Happy New Year! Cheers

Thanks Cip, must try one like this - it'll match my pyjamas!
Bristolian Bob Give it a try! Keep turning, cheers
Es usted un tremendo artista señor, le doy un like, y me suscribo a su canal.
Gracias, Miguel
So beautiful wood
I really like this platter. Gives me an idea on what to do with some of the many chunks of scrap wood. I am curious about your sand and seal. What is it exactly and what is it's purpose? Thanks for the great video.
Hey there Charlie! I use lacquer based "Deft" brand Sanding Sealer. I think it is like shellac, but I have never used shellac. It dries very fast and sands easily. It is great on end-grain and soft wood. Once it penetrates and hardens, it greatly reduces tear out. I hope that helps. Kind Regards.
Thanks Cip. Much appreciated.
Awesome Job !
+Soias Iwbn Hello Soias. Glad you enjoyed the video.Thank you for watching. All the Best.
Nice platter Cip ...thanks
Steve
Hi! Steve,
Thanks for watching,
Cheerio, Cip
Very nice platter considering that the raw material was off-casts. Thanks for the videos!
Hello John,
I seldom buy new materials. I am over joyed when I get wood this good.
Thanks for watch my video.
Cheers, Cip
Free wood is the best!
Just bought my first lathe and I'm inspired by your video to do a platter as my first project. questions: What is the purpose of the sanding sealer? Do you do your sanding off the lathe? and finally, do the sand after each coat of wipe-on ploy?
Howdy Rudy! The purpose of the sanding sealer is to seal the pores in the grain of the wood. This greatly reduced the amount of poly needed. The wipe-on-poly is very thin and needs several coats to build-up a gloss. I usually apply two or three coats, let it dry, sand on the lath then repeat until I have the gloss I want. Have fun, cheers.
Hi Cip,just watched your vid again, and was wondering if a set of cole jaws for finishing the bottom would be easier, just a thought, again it looks great, wood turning,it's a wonderful hobby,I love, regards,Rich
Hello Richard,
Yes, cole jaws would be good. That is one thing I do not own and often thought of getting.
Thanks for the comment, Cheers, Cip
Wonderful job
Hello Richard,
Thank you for watching the video.
Cheers, Cip
great video.
+Lee Michel Thanks for watching, Lee.
Hello! New Subscriber! Love this!
Hi
I love the platter you made and you have give me an idea for one of my own.
I was interested to see the way you reversed the platter onto your chuck with foam, any tips on that method would be helpful
Regards
Michael
Howdy Michael! Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, give it a go. The video shows how I do it. Keeping the platter centered is the trick. Cheers.
nice job looks good
Hey Tom,Thanks for watching and leaving a comment,Kind regards, Cip
Hi Cip, I just subscribed to your channel! I'm from Oakland, Ca!
Thanks Cip, very interesting.
Hello Jim,Thanks for watching. Glad you found it interesting.Cheers, Cip
Buen videos , hermoso el producto.....
+carlos a. “carlos c.” condor aguirre Gracias Carlos.
nice job on the platter
I'm just curious Chip, why not use a bowl gouge. You would get smoother cut
+William Castleberry Hello there William, you are correct. It is just me. I learned with scrapers and I just feel more comfortable with them. Thank you for your comment.
Chip, what is the friction pad you are using? Is this a standard piece of foam? Love the platter. I have a lot of Black Walnut, Oak, Maple and Andiroba Cherry strips that I could make several platters like this. I really like the finish and appreciate you telling the speeds you turn at as well as the techniques in finishing.
Howdy Vyron! The friction pad is just some type of packing material I had around the shop. It is stiff but plyable. It sounds like you have some excellent wood. Give it a go! Cheers
Very nice wood
nice work, nice vid and you seem very nice as well! :)
+juneair Hello Juneair! Thank you for watching. Kind regards.
Thanks for your video. It was useful .
Hello MZ, glad to hear you found it useful. Cheers
That was so nice, I want to do that and I don't have any experiences before. What will be your advices if I try to be a professional turner?
This is the second of your videos that I have watched. I enjoy your gentle voice and the "pretty good" self compliments on your work. They give me the freedom to do something okay and then come back and try to clean it up. I am a little nervous about that friction hold you did on your plate. Is it safe from flying away like a frisbee?
George Fotinakes Is it absolutely safe? Absolutely "No". But if I am careful and have sharp tools and wear my face shield, it is do-able. The friction pad holds the platter perpendicular and the small wood nub keep it centered. The hole in the nub also keep the platter from flying. It is very important to cut gingerly. Do not apply extreme pressure. Stay out of the line of fire.
Yes, a lot of precautions. Remember no one is responsible for my safety but me. Many turners do not clean-up the underside. They leave the mortise. It is a personal choice. Being concerned for your safety is a good instinct. Cheers. PS: Sorry for getting so wordy.
Cip, I am glueing up some scrap right now for a platter. Because my lathe only turns up to 12" mine won't be very large. But my real question today is what kind of lathe are using there? I am thinking about looking for a new lathe. Or maybe I should say another lathe. I hate to buy new if I can find good used tools.
Charlie
Howdy Charlie! I mostly use my Nova DVR-XP(variable speed), but I also use my Nova 1624-44(8 speed). Cheers
