How to use OPQRST as an effective patient assessment tool

OPQRST is a useful mnemonic (memory device) used by EMTs, paramedics, as well as nurses, medical assistants and other allied health professionals, to learn about a patient’s pain complaint.
The OPQRST questions are the start of a conversation with a patient about their pain complaint. As an EMT or paramedic, learn to ask these questions to get useful information for additional assessment and treatment decisions.
