Last year I took 6 c-stands the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The corrosion was so bad that each stand had to be completely disassembled power washed, light sanded, steel wool, aluminum polished, then buffed. All the rubber stops were destroyed. Each stand took 2 hours!!! This vide just brought back some painful cleaning memories

I just bought some 2nd hand c-stands & Combo stands. I initially just sprayed the bolt threads with WD40 & the knuckles moved a bit better. Then I took your advice on how to thoroughly clean the bolt threads & the knuckles now spin as if new. Scrubbing the steel and aluminium sections vigorously with steel wool & WD40 has got those beaten up looking stands shiny again. My kit looks so much better thanks to this video. Thanks Andrew for everything you do.

You don't want to lubricate the cables and pulleys because the lubricant can cause them to slip and will take ages to dry out.

It's rusted on the inside or has moisture in it. It will eventually stop after a few days. The WD is helping with that rust.

Great channel and great tips yet again AND again ones that I have never seen any where else. I never would have even thought of using wire wool on chrome. I was amazed you got the rust off with out trashing the chrome. I am guessing the main stand you were cleaning was an Avenger Steel Combo stand, can I ask if you have ever used the Avenger stand extension kit ie the Avenger C590 Conka Bonka set ? A video just on light stands might be an idea especially as most videos are Matthews or Kupo. Matthews make great stands but they are not as common as Avenger/Manfrotto in some parts of the world, out side of the USA. I personally prefer some Avenger/Manfrotto stands because some have wider bases and big locking knobs. That said I personally have more Matthews Reverse Stands than any other.
