    Please do a little more research before making claims 🥲 working class women also wore corsets back in the day and it was primarily for back and boob support (they wouldn't be able to work if a corset was as restrictive as you claim, and they certainly didn't have a whole team to lace them in). Bridgerton was set in the Regency Era which had looser style clothing that wouldn't require a "cinched" waist, they only added that bit in to show how desperate some women were to find a match. Corsets were tailor-made for women to be as comfortable and adjustable as possible and did not have size limitations.

      @@martamaj2178 Tight-lacing was an optional trend that was added to the construction and durability of corsets in the mid-1800s. Other corsets before this time period really weren’t designed to take the brunt of tight-lacing. Corsets and stays were customizable and weren't as restrictive as people today believe. Obviously it's not as comfortable as undergarments today, but there are a lot of misconceptions out there about corsets.

    I'd love to see y'all wear actual corsets, instead of bustiers. An actual corset/set of stays, custom made by someone in the historical fashion world, rather than a fashion designer. For information on how corsets (along with video/pictoral proof from different eras) actually worked for women -- rather than the male-forced 'common knowledge' -- go check out Cathy Hay, Karolina Zebrowska, Bernadette Banner, Abby Cox, and a lot more.

      I love all of them and their knowledge. I’d like to get a corset but haven’t. I used to weigh 300 lbs (hormone problems like PCOS and a back injury do not go well together), and now I weigh about 120 lbs. But when I lost the weight it mainly left my boobs very saggy, going from a 48DDD to something like a 38C, and excessive skin on the “apron” of stomach. It annoys me because I want to wear crop tops, things with open backs (I’d like to have an even smaller chest - being non-binary I found a sports bra that makes me almost flat), and stuff like corsets. But I don’t want people to see wrinkly skin - but I’m too paranoid to try and find a plastic surgeon and have the excess skin removed because of COVID and any other chance of infection.
      I do want to find some more vintage style clothes as I can’t sew, but I don’t know where to look. My style ranges from alternative to very girly. But my back is losing the cushioning between the vertebrae all down my spine, so I don’t know if the corset would make the pain I feel 24/7, worse or better.

      @@FlagCutie Yeah, I remember when the Try Guys wore them for a weekend, and the shop they went to went through how you slowly work your way through sizing and getting used to the sensation of a corset. Of course that’s in LA and I love over 200+ miles from there. But thank you! I’m much happier (even with the annoying excess skin) being so tiny. I have to wear like smalls and sometimes mediums (which sometimes look too baggy) in terms of shirts - bottoms are more complicated and larger because of the excess skin, and because I have a longer torso with that perfect hourglass figure that a lot of women want, but I have shorter legs, so pants, skirts, etc. tend to be longer on me than on other people. Hence why I almost have to get booty shorts to have short shorts for when it gets above 110 degrees here in the summer.

    I wish more people realized that the "corset" scene in Bridgerton would have been impossible with the hand stitched grommets that were seen on the stays. Tight-lacing wasn't possible in the regency era and didn't occur until metal grommets were used in corsetry which made it possible. Also, not everybody tight-laced even when it was possible.

  • @marianavasconcelos5570
    @marianavasconcelos5570 3 года назад +69

    Corsets were used for boob and back support, not cinching the waist. They were tailored to women and quite flexible. Also, historically the holes in the back were sown and not metal eyelets, so you actually couldn't pull the corset all that much or it would ruin it

  • @Dizzy_frog

    Tight lacing was more for fashion and shock value, it was rare. The whole fainting in a corset idea was more of a literatury device. Corsets were made for bust and back support. Working class women wore them for many tasks and were able to lace them by themselves. The fact that corsets are so demonised today is because of Victorian men. I’d recommend Bernadette Banner’s video on the subject.

      Yep it was the men who spread more propaganda of how stays are bad because making undergarments is an industry dominated by women and women only so men were threatened by that so yeah- it did work and while people today view corsets as like a restriction of the patriarchy or sth like that ironically corsets are made by women for women so yeah. Also Noble women were probably chubbier and due to the hoop skirts it gave the illusion that their waists are smaller. Normal working class women all wore stays, and did a lot of hard physical activities in them

      Absolutely correct. Women have been wearing stays for hundreds of years. If they were the torture devices men wanted to portray them as, then women would have died by the thousands. Almost /all/ of the makers of womens' fashion (including corrsets/stays) were women. Designed, run, and made by women, for womens' bodies. They could run, play sports, ride horses, and do all of their work throughout the day.
      Also, the tightlacing phenomenon was only rarely used when women were shamed for gaining any sort of weight, usually by husbands who wouldn't pay to have their clothes altered (which was a norm for hundreds of years).

    Can we please do research on people actually wearing corsets in the past, before making a video about it? Bridgerton’s depiction of corsetry is completely wrong. It would take a two minute search on RUclips to find a million videos of clothing historians busting corset myths.

      @두펀스머츠 3 года назад

      But isn't it true that corsets were also used as a means of suppressing women's bodies and creating an ideal body image? Just curious. I know corset can be used for treatment.

    • @hannahstoelb4781
      @hannahstoelb4781 3 года назад +1

      I think the main difference is that in modern times, we think in terms of the ideal body shape. We don’t wear are clothing in a way that can drastically change the way your body looks to match the ideal body shapes we have today. For example, in the US right now the ideal body shape is the Kardashian body: big boobs, tiny waist, and big butt. The only way most of us can achieve this body is through plastic surgery. However, in the past, it wasn’t an ideal body shape they were going for. They were trying to achieve a fashionable clothing silhouette. To do this, but they would use padding and the shape of the corset would change to match the silhouette. The corset was not used to actually change the body of the person wearing it. It was a supportive undergarment. The depictions of tight lacing, to make the waist physically smaller, we see in shows and on TV is false. It was very rare that anyone did it, and was actually condemned by doctors (mostly men back then) and the media (newspaper articles and comics illustrate this.) If you want a better explanation than mine, Bernadette Banner on RUclips is really great. She’s a fashion historian that has done multiple videos on the subject. She also had to wear a medical corset for her spinal issues, and explains the differences in those and historical corsets.

    Here to add to the pile of already present comments about the gross misconceptions around corsets. Corsets were never historically intended to be uncomfortable or even really make the waist smaller. They were for support and for creating a specfic shape. Women did not lace them so tightly as protrayed in modern film and tv. It's ridiculous what a bad reputation corsets have garnered, when honestly girdles and bras are much more uncomfortable than corsets ever were.

    Corsets weren't originally meant to be about making the waist smaller. They were used for breast and back support. They supported the boobs from below distributing the weight of the breast across the upper body opposed to modern bras that hold the boobs up from the bottom and pulling them up and puttinh all the weight kf the breasts on the shoulders, neck and upper back. Sude effects of wearing corsests did include smaller looking waists, enhanced boobs, and sometimes temporarily shifting organs that caused no internal damage. Corsets were also meant to be worn over an undergarment, not on bare skin.

Tight lacing wasn’t the way most women did it, especially not if the eyelet holes were hand stitched like in Bridgerton, it’s just full of ‘sexy’ corseting and the false claim of tight lacing, neither of which are even remotely historically accurate. Those weren't corsets, not even fashion corsets. I wouldn't even call that a stay. Ya'll should be not only be ashamed for this video but embarrassed. The information that you passed about corsetry is wrong. It's straight up ignorance. They were supportive garments that came in a wide variety of shapes and functions. Some women in the Victorian era did tight-lace but that was more for a statement, a fashion plate or shown by TV shows. It was by no means close to the norm.
    All that complaining aside, I want that color-blocked leather jacket.

    Tight lacing wasnt all that common actually. Corsets were basically bras before bras. They were very flexible. And the only reason smaller corsets r around today is because the bigger ones had more fabric that could be remade into other things, while smaller ones didnt have as much fabric so they were left alone.

    Not trying to be mean but like? People were perfectly capable of existing in corsets before bras came about. It wasn't like "oh I'm going to get 4 people tighten my corset so tight that I cannot physically breathe or move, but at least I'll have that hourglass shape." Tightlacing was not nearly as common as shown in TV and movies, and they were really meant more for support than for changing the shape of your body. Of course they did give you a bit of shape so that you could keep up with the newest silhouettes and styles, but women were still perfectly capable of getting things done in corsets

    No...just no. Do not base your knowledge of corsets off of tv shows. Corsets were designed by women for women and meant to offer extra support. Tight lacing was very rare and pretty much done by aristocracy. Working women did not tight lace and they did some seriously hard core work. Also, athletic corsets were a thing. I hate these bs stories about how it takes a lot of ppl to put on and it is uncomfortable. A properly made corset to fit your body is not much harder than putting on a bra and typically i find is easier to exercise in. I used to do pe class in high school in a corset because it helped my posture.

  • @MyWeirdNormal1

    Really wish we could leave the myth that corsets were meant to be worn tightly back in 2020 where it belongs. In 2021, I'd like us to all educate ourselves on how corsets were only ever meant to be support in the same way that bras are. You wouldn't wear a bra that is too tight and women back in the day didn't wear extremely tight corsets. While it ~could~ have been a trend among a very select few, it was NEVER a widespread thing.

    First, this is absolutely not a corset. At all 😂 it's a cute, boned top, but definitely not a corset. And if anyone says, that this is what they are called...maybe, but that still doesn't make it a corset. And secondly, PLEASE, do some research, because then they wouldn't think this: you can't breath in corsets. that only happens if it doesn't fit right. and they were not made for making the waist smaller, they were basically a bra with back support. and about Bridgerton....I haven't seen it, but this scene she showed made me cringe so hard, because.. WHERE ARE THE CHEMISES?! like..... don't wear a corset without a chemise...
    if someone actually read this, I'm sorry, I had to rant a bit 😂 hope you are doing good and you are healthy ❤️

  • @lindsayosterhoff2459

    Corsets were rarely worn to cinch in one's waist. They were worn for back support. The reason that the waists looked small is because women would wear padding on their hips and chest to create the illusion of a smaller waist.
    All the things you see in movies and books about women lacing their corsets tightly are for dramatic effect. It's not historically accurate. Sure, a few women did tightlace but it was incredibly rare.

      @@martamaj2178 Here's the thing. I have studied corsetry for over 20 years and have worn corsets and garments of that nature for over 10. My doctors are aware and have seen that they have not caused me physical harm and have actually helped my back issues.
      Corsets are simply pretty back braces. That was always their intention. The only time they cause harm is if the wearer is wearing one that is the wrong style for their body or is laced too tight. Shoes are the same way but no one is making a big deal of that.
