  • The Legacy of a Discovery: The Vatican Manuscript of Spinoza's Ethics and some Recent Editions of the Work
The paper summarises the story of the discovery in 2011 of the only existing manuscript of Spinoza’s Ethics. The manuscript - discovered in the Vatican Apostolic Library in Vatican City - had been kept until the 1920s in the Archives of the Congregation of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, now the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The paper explains why it was deposited in that Archive and why it had never been located before 2011. It also analyses some recent editions of the Ethics that have taken into account the hundreds of variations in the manuscript and the choices made by its numerous editors.
Pina Totaro is a Senior Researcher at the Iliesi Institute (Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee) in Rome. Her primary area of research is the history of early modern philosophy, with the emphasis on Spinoza's philosophy. She is the author of several books, including Instrumenta mentis: Contributi al lessico filosofico di Spinoza and Quatre Enquêtes sur Spinoza. Totaro has published a critical edition and an Italian translation of Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise and his Hebrew grammar. In 2011, together with Leen Spruit, she discovered the only surviving manuscript of Spinoza's Ethics in the Vatican Library, which influenced a publication of a new critical edition of this work.
The international philosophical conference Between Substance & Subject. The Presence of Spinoza in Hegel (26-28 October 2023, AGRFT, Ljubljana) was organized by the University of Padua and the University of Ljubljana - Faculty of Arts & Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. The conference was carried out as part of the project Hegel's Political Metaphysics (J6-2590), which is financed by the Slovenian Research Agency and will continue within the framework of the Hegel Congress 2024.
