  • London headteacher, Andrew O'Neill, is today introducing a 12-hour school day from 7am to 7pm in a bid to help with children’s ‘phone addictions’.
    Students will use this extra time to participate in extracurricular activities and are provided breakfast and dinner. Should we extend the school day to break kids' phone addiction?

    While good in theory, 12 hour days in school will likely cause burnout and cause an increase in mental health issues. Phone addiction needs tackling I agree, but extending school days is not the answer

    More time away from family great..just a ploy to stop families being together, and building a strong family unit!

    All this is gonna do is make kids gonna want to go on their phones more when they get home. The reason they do it is because they are tired after a day at school. They're gonna be even more tired if the day is longer and especially if it starts earlier. If anyone wants to disagree with me, please do. I'd be happy to engage in some sort of discussion regarding this topic.

      I completely agree, and additionally, children wouldn’t stop being addicted to their phones, as it is only optional, making it so most children wouldn’t bother with going to school for 4 extra hours because they feel like they don’t need to. It would just lead to children being unconvinced on the benefits of being involved in the 4 hours of extra school, which leaves a lot of work for the school to persuade them into doing so. This also doesn’t tackle the main issue with the rising addiction of mobile phones used by children, as children can still get hooked online even if they spend more time in school. I don’t blame schools however, as I believe the social media platforms are to blame for this, especially because of their addicting nature. Overall then, this scheme would lead to some children being mature enough to realise that being on their phones is harmful, but not enough to make a big enough change in society. The responsibility here is for the social media apps to refine their algorithms to make browsing online more safe for kids.

      oh and one last thing
      there is simply not enough data for us to make a good enough decision on whether this change or good or not, we just have to wait and see

    Susanna makes such a lazy assumption here, that every schoolchild when they get home from school, goes up to their room and is on their phone the rest of the day. Simply not true. I didn't have the time to be on my phone when I got home because I was swimming in homework or revision for exams on top of the already 7 hour school teaching day. By all means if kids want to spend time after school doing extracurricular then happy days, but NO way should this be compulsory and just feeds into a narrative that schoolchildren are socially inept phone addicts. LAZY journalism

    It totally bogggles my mind how many people write outraged comments on videos they clearly haven’t watched. I feel bad for this teacher - the media is purposefully misrepresenting the program for the algorithm

      I have watched and totally disagree with 12 hr school! Special Needs Children can't cope with longer in school, most can't cope with School and causes them overwhelming Anxiety and distress ! Increasing meltdowns and school avoidance! Increasing their risks of poor mental health.
      Teachers have to do too much outside of the school day. When are they meant to have time to do marking, lesson planning, and more importantly, spend time with their families?

    This is my head teacher :O he’s not making a good choice in my opinion

  • @user-is7nd5wz1d
    @user-is7nd5wz1d 19 дней назад +1

    Adding onto my previous point, this headteacher and his rules are so unreasonable and inconsiderate.
    1. My younger sister who is the year below me, was throwing up in school, told the teachers and they refused to call my mum. Therefore she texted my mum to tell her she was sick, and got her phone confiscated for 5 days. After all 3 adults in my household left their workplace to talk to the schools, they left with no phone and being spoken to in such a patronising manner by the headteacher.
    2. After a fight was about to break off in my sisters year, I was the only person breaking it up, there were no teachers on the playground or in site, and they locked me in a room for over 3 hours without my school bag, and no work to do, and also my mum was not contacted. This was all because I was preventing a fight from happening, which also my sister was included and the teachers did not fulfil their duties.
    There have been so many other situations that have happened personally, to my sister and to my friends (who have all come to this school). The teachers are very unprofessional and literally scream at children over nothing, for example:
    - not wearing a blazer
    - wearing a coat inside (during winter)
    - talking in a line up
    - standing when eating
    - taking food outside
    - and so many more reasons.
    This headteacher really likes to portray himself as “the best headteacher of the year” yet he runs a prison and children hate this school and are treated like prisoners, speaking from experience and others experiences. He is putting on an act and forces this school to look how it does, when in reality it’s nothing like it.

    Nah, we won't let our kids get addicted, we actually want to spend time with our little humans and enjoy time together as a family. As soon as kids get home, wind down and have some fun, no homework as long as they're not struggling.... 6 hours of school is enough.

    • @slenderg0dwii868
      @slenderg0dwii868 21 день назад +2

      fr especially if youre in 2 year course for gcse like me. i have to stay from 8:45am to 4:10pm and an additional 1 hour tutoring when i get home AND homework AND ALSO revision. 12 hours is crazy its almost as if we devote our whole childhood to this prison.

    • @85catnip
      @85catnip 20 дней назад +1

      @@slenderg0dwii868 Totally agree, it's ridiculous. Unfortunately, a lot of adults don't understand or appreciate that when a child comes home after 6 hours of studying at school, they NEED time to wind down and let their brains chill. Or kids WILL get frustrated, depressed, burnt out, over tied, anxious etc etc.
      I remember doing DT home work, it was very easy but I felt horrible because i just needed time out. my schools days were the worst days of my life. Loads of love and respect to you and great luck in your education!
