This was like watching the old Millwrights at Timkens fabricating special construction projects out of plate and tubing when I was an apprentice. This fellow works like a Millwright.
@@txtoolcrib I gave you a thumbs up. I was very impressed with your work and paying you a compliment. Those older experts in the mill could fab up wonderful stuff! It brought back some great memories. I was a Millwright Apprentice and completed 2.5 years before the layoffs in the early 1980s. I ended up joining the Navy before the second round of layoffs. When I got out, I called in for reinstatement and they said of course, but you're still in layoff status.... I decided to stay in California and get my Masters. I'm now more of a tinkerer with a bunch of metal and woodworking machines in my small shop. I have access to all kinds of tooling at work
Hello, Ben - excellent video - you certainly display your considerable knowledge and skill as millwright and welder in this project - not to mention the steadiest pair of hands I've ever seen - I like your use of the hammer while welding - did you use a lubricant prior to drilling? Also, will this be a portable or stationary unit? I can say that this video is a fine example of fabrication at its best...Outstanding!
Thank you very much! I used a wax lubricant on the annular bits. This vise stand is meant for my shop that will be built in the next couple of weeks. So it is meant to be semi-permanent, so that I can position it in different places within the shop. Later I may mount this vise to a table, I haven't decided just yet.
An excellent looking vice stand. Also a wonderful showcase of your talents as a fabricator. Your skills show your experience quite well. Great job sir!

Of course the one thing you didn’t list in the description is the one I need in my life! Where did you get the cone shaped hard rock for the angle grinder? I wish I knew that was an actual thing before now...
This was somehow a realy relaxing and satisfying video! But speaking of vises... I have a suggestion for a future video: the Eagle Grip Locking Pliers or Vise Grips. Maybe you can have a look into them =) I would appreciate your opinion on them
@@txtoolcrib yeah, I had the same reaction! And at the moment there seem to be no authentic reviews, if the quality matches up with the price tag. - But maybe there will be a sale any time soon
Most excellent, Ben! If I were your neighbor, I'd ask you to teach me how to do all that. Make more videos like this. This was great watching how you built this. How much does that stand weigh?
I haven’t had a chance to weigh it yet. I’ll let you know when I get a chance. If you were my neighbor I would be happy to teach you. Always willing to teach those who are willing to learn.
What a great build video! You're an artist with that torch. And, of course, it wouldn't have been a proper TS Tool Crib video without the cameo appearance of the Leatherman Surge on your hip. [Grammarly suggested I meant 'surgeon' instead of 'Surge on', which would also be descriptive of your skill with that torch.😄] Contrary to the title of the vid, that vise stand was a-buildin' rather than wiltin'.
@@txtoolcrib Thanks. I saw one of your videos on a concrete poor, do you have the framing part. I been wanting a 40x60 shop and looking for ideas. The only issue the shop will be 5 miles away on a diffrent lot I own as my home lot is to small. Well I'm a new subscriber to your channel.
It's been a couple of years. How do you like your stand so far? How is its stability? Anything you would do different? With that size of vise, it seems like there could be some issues with stability. I just got a 6.5" vise and am thinking I need a concrete slab if I want a pedestal stand. I could be wrong of course. Beautiful work by the way.
For what I need it works perfectly. However, if you are going to be needing it to do some serious stuff, then I would recommend mounting it to the floor.
@TX Tool Crib brother, I'm an Electrician Forman and at 52yrs old, I still learn some thing new every day. Have beautiful and merry Christmas to you and your family. And keep those great videos coming. 🤙🤙🤙
Should have the wheel bolt heads on the outside vs the inside in case you weld off it. You won't get welding splatter on the threads, but dam good job!
Guess you don’t need it but a circle attachment for the torch may make a good video, I just can’t get over the shot brake drum that’s not more rotted than worn, must be a rust belt thing
I’m actually planning to start a separate channel for build like this, making some of my own tools, furniture my wife wants me to build, just for fun projects, and general metal working tools and techniques. I’m about to have my shop built and will be making quite a few things in the near future.

The paper trick to divide the cylinder into 4 equal quadrants was a good one. Simple and quick
And best of all, no measuring required!

Great welds. What settings did you use for wire speed and amps? Also, did you use a 220v or 120v mig?
What size bolts you use thanks
3/4 x 2
Can you make the stand without out the vise or drum , I have those parts
Find a local repair shop or trucking company for a used brake drum. Cheers!

I used 3/8” plate for both plates. Bolts were 3/4” x 2”
Hey love the video and the Craftsmanship, but did you fill the round pipe with sand, it takes that ping_ding sound away, plus it adds some weight too.
I didn’t, but I will be drilling a hole on top just for that.
