Definitely one of the “Deeper Cuts.” I consider myself a pretty hard DEFTONES fan, but to listen to this song you have to be in the mood for it?! Again this was their dark period...so there you go.🤘🏼🗣🗣🗣🗣

The self titled album is one of my absolute favorites.... it's like hardcore, Dadaism, and Basquiat had a beautifully macabre picnic that was decorated with graffitied flowers at the dawn of an apocalypse.

you pointed out the production on the Guitars and that chainsaw sound which also permeates a lot of the s/t record, that was a conscious choice by the band as they wanted this record to have a sound reminscent of the band My Bloody Valentine particuarly their seminal record "Loveless", give them a listen sometime and you will probably hear the influence.
as for the lyrics, it up to interpretation but Chino in particular was going through a divorce and other members of the band had already been through one or were also going through one at the time which probably factored into this song and this record in general a little bit.
The synth mixed with the guitar at the riff down touches my ears so nicely. Abe’s drumming in that section as well, chefs kiss. 6:55
Hesperian== Western Warhorse... aka Hesperian death horse. Known for courage and partnership.. rumored to partner with rider for life.
That chorus riff is definitely Stef being inspired by Meshuggah. He's said it in general before but hearing it after I became a Meshuggah fan, I could hear the influence on different songs. And he was a fan for ages. Way back when they weren't even that well known. Early 2000s maybe even late 90s? I forget.
The pinkpop 2006 live version is my favourite, Frank’s synth parts really sticks out especially in the breakdown. During the snw tour they played this song and man that riff hits so hard and heavy live. The show I was at they did be quiet and drive and followed it by this song. It was like they did the in love song followed by the break up song. Love this song.
Chino is the David Lynch of lyricism. Lol

You can't take Chino's lyrics to heart. They are all cryptic and all over the place. Personally, I love that. For instance, the song Digital bath, most people think its about something sexual because the vibe of the song itself, but in fact, its about a girl being electrocuted in a bathtub. Just one example.
