My uncle Bob was playing alto sax on this track. I used to look out the window in my granddad's house in Lagos and watch from upstairs the view while I vibed to this tune blaring out of the radio. This sound brought Ginger Baker pronto to Lagos in the '70's to learn the afro beat rhythm from the master...
I am blessed to be part of the generation that used to watch Fela live at the shrine on Pepple Street Lagos on thursdays for the free show. He played Blackman's cry occassionally as part of the medley of Afrobeat classics for the day's show. Those were precious evenings, man! Even then, as young Lagos boys, we knew that we were experiencing profound cultural moments that world would one day discover and relish. Everybody say yeah yeah!
What is so good about it? I'm not being confrontational, just want to understand this type of music, because as first time listening to it I don't like it
I danced to Fela's Afro Beat live at Apollo theater. I was a young 23 year old. Fela was and remain one of the best original African musician in my opinion.. His creativity was exceptional. I can dance to afro beat allllllllll night!!
We were a group of teenagers from south america who loved the rock. We heard this song and we began to dance in the street and nobody knew what kind of music was that we liked it a lot
This was a huge hit in Trinidad in the 70s I had the album ,,,,,smoking weed was so cool back then and great music,,,,blessup thank you for sharing ...brings back good memories..
My fav Fela track....had this one at the age of 15. ..banging it loud. I used to sing it to my sisters and they thought I lost my mind. However, on the original LP...that sax solo was loud... modern technology truncating the hell out it...I guess. Im just glad its here for all to hear his genius
Payton I'm also "learning". That is the truth. This man need to be studied. Every millisecond in his work is a full masterpiece. It's a kind of music you should listen seated in a school chair and pay very attention to the sound or even behold it.
I had a dream that I was part of Fela's Africa 70 crew. I was the happiest I'd ever been. When the Nigerian government got me down I'd go for a long distance run and smoke some herb and it was all good. But alas Fela is gone, but not forgotten, he shall live on in my dreams:)
. . . . . . I've got Fela's RUclips playlist, almost 200 songs. Just imagine playing Fela's 200 songs, how many hours that would be? I'm a boomer, afrobeat is me; Fela never dies!❤💛💚🤠
let me also point out ginger baker. what a legend. got high on herion and listend to african drum combos. fucked off to nigeria (where im from) in the 60's to play with fela.
This particular number reminds me of those days n years in Lagos, still in d primary school when it rented d air waves n d snr boys swung to its rhythm at parties n where ever they found necessary for them to. One of his classics of d early 70s. I also recall dat we had 2 beg one snr brother 2 take us all d way from down town Surulere 2 Kakadu Night club@Alago Meji, Ebute Meta, trecking a distance of nearly 5 km 2 see him live, we were unlucky as he was tour n were only able 2 view his pixs on d.
Strong message from an icon FELA! He said when are we going to be free from this slavery. We shall overcome someday. Who said my colour is not good, bring him here to see him....
I heard about Fela when I was 17 I guess. By the occasion, I couldn't even imagine if Fela Kuti was a brand, a medicine or a guy. Internet was different in these times. I'm 31 right now and just discovered Fela and I'm so amazed by his music. I thought what I have missed in those 14 years. But I was a kind of stupid young boy. I guess I couldn't understand how awesome Fela was. Now my eyes are open and so are my ears and heart.
Man I remember this track and this album. I was 17 years old, living in Trinidad. Wherever you went, back in the day it was called Blocko, every weekend there would be Blockos in different areas. Wherever you went this album would be killing it, long groovy, funky Afro beats. Live on Fela, thanks for the memories.
Kelvin same here. From Trinidad and remember this song from the Blockos. Totally forgot about this song until I heard it at the end of the new movie starring Edris Alba called Beast which was filmed in South Africa. Had to sit through the credits to get name of the song.
This is my all time Fela favourite. I must have been a really weird teenager come to think about it. I'd play this track and Je'nwi temi (Don't gag me) and until they finished I would not leave that space...I missed many classes. Lol. Whats your favourite Fela track?

Yoruba Funk! Genius Fela....
Im just starting to learn about Fela and listen to his music, and there has yet to be a song I've clicked on that I dislike. This guy is a legend

The dislikes are for the Ginger Baker purists from Cream that hadn't experienced enlightenment

Thanks Lenny Kravitz for shouting out this artist and expanding my musical playlist. Love this. The rhythm, the feel...Amazing.
Heard Lenny Kravitz mention this song in the men's health video, felt compelled to give this a listen. Love the rhythm of this track.

Fela Kuti is the man!
The greatest era of music was the 70's b/c those artists produced afro-beat/funk from Africa, Caribean, and US. That music penetrates your soul!
let me also point out ginger baker. what a legend. got high on herion and listend to african drum combos. fucked off to nigeria (where im from) in the 60's to play with fela.
