    You can never go wrong with Steely Dan. These guys are in a class by themselves. Their production is exquisite and their songs are interesting in so many ways. This song is one of my favorites and doesn’t get the attention I feel it deserves. Thanks for choosing it. Great reaction. 🌺✌️

    Steely Dan is great. They're so unique. Combination of Soul/Funk/ and Jazz. They were just different, and such great lyrics.

    The guitar effect is done with a talk box (the best users in the past - Peter Frampton, David Gilmour, Joe Walsh). The recording was done by Dean Parks, with the effects added later by Walter Becker. This is one of my absolute SD favorites.

    What I love about Steely Dan is all the different musical styles they incorporate in their sound. Just like all the great bands, you have to have your own sound. Great band, good reaction/analysis, peace.

    It also sure sounds to me like he's playing through a Wah pedal in addition to the talkbox. Totally funky song though, love it.

    You absolutely must do a deep dive on this album, SD's finest in my opinion. Every song unique, masterfully written and expertly performed. This song is a great example: funky, gritty groove with Fagen's perfect vocals and esoteric lyrics.

    Yes, that was a guitar run through a voice box, made famous by Peter Frampton (Do You Feel Like We Do) and Joe Walsh (Rocky Mountain Way)

      Also a real master of the voice-box - David Gilmour. Slightly less talented, but pretty good - Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Mick Mars (Motley Crue).

    Only Steely Dan could come up with a song about drinking Zombies from a Coconut Shell and the travails of a spoiled young woman
    acting on her father's advice for a quick divorce in Haiti to end her unhappy, crazy marriage. Donald Fagen's lyrics are always
    a fever dream of images. Steely Dan is a genre of its own.

      Interesting take, papa is usually taken to refer to Papa Doc Duvalier by a lot of commenters but I think yours is closer to the plot of the story.

  • @martintayler23
    @martintayler23 10 месяцев назад +4

    Dean Parks played lead guitar and Walter altered it with a talk box to create this humourous, reggae piece which to me is unlike anything the Dan had created to this point. My take on the song is the reference to Papa which I allude to Francois Duvalier, the president of Haiti who was also known as 'Papa Doc'. Quicky divorces could be obtained in Carribean countries, aka Haiti, and many people ventured there to do just that.

    That talk box sounds a lot like what my granddad used to play, he called it a Jew's harp, but that's not cool, the better term is a mouth organ.
