A Special thanks to Beit Midrash Morasha Cape Town and Bnei Akiva Cape Town for allowing me to film this and publish this after Shabbat on my You Tube Channel The Jewish Convert.
Written by Debbi Friedman may her memory be for a blessing
    About the Jewish Convert:
I make educational videos explaining Judaism to those that is not familiar with Jewish communities, jewish culture, jewish prayer, jewish people and the jewish religion. I myself am a Religious Orthodox Jew living in Israel that strive to always serve God and learn His Torah
I Hope everyone reading this will commit to Torah Study/ Bible Study and through this you will discover that God is Real and God is One and has no partners like Christianity Claims about Jesus. I am speaking as a former Christian that discovered the Truth that Jesus was Jewish and died a Jew. I Converted to Orthodox Judaism and you as well can be Jewish. Stop praying to a dead Jew.
    Creative Process and Adding Value:
This is entirely my own work. This is a video that I filmed with my Iphone and then edited in iMovie adding the English subtitles as a Ticker.

Shavuah tov, yashar koach. A nice beginning to Havdalah, with Reb Shlomo's Z"L's niggun. I had the zechus to participate in a NCSY Shabbaton in Ocala Florida with "the singing Rabbi" when I was younger, many years ago. I still remember elements of it vividly. He was a very warm, beautiful soul, filled with Ahavat Yisroel.
I hope you don't mind that I was yotzee on the brochos. I was very respectful and my head was covered at all times.
    Have a beautiful week.

@Tony Peck you can start by studying Torah. Chabad.org is a great resource as is aish.com because you can find out what this week’s parsha is, you can read about Judaism, they also have religious texts in there. But as a convert myself, I highly advise you don’t try to learn on your own things like Talmud or Halacha. The most important thing is to start with the basics. You won’t know enough to have a rabbi convert you on the spot, I’ve seen that happen only once, and the guy who got converted was already living like a Jew basically. That takes YEARS to perfect. Don’t set yourself up for failure. It’s okay to not know everything. You will learn with your rabbi and beit din. The important thing is to start learning the basics, and look for a community you feel comfortable in.

So the question came up why is the Chazan (Prayer leader) wearing a Tallit (prayer shawl) at night time? Is it not said that you should not wear one at night because you cant see the Tzitzit? Rav Google was very unclear on this and thus I asked my Rabbi who clarified the matter. The source for wearing a Tallit by Ashkenazi Jews is in Mishna Brurah 18:4 which states that a Chazan should not make a Bracha over a Tallit for Maariv (Evening prayer). This shows that the Chazan can wear a Tallit at night he should just not make a Bracha over it because he is not wearing a Tallit for the Mitzvah (Commandment) of Tzitzit but rather for Kevod Tzibur (Respect for the Public) as the representative for the community. Chabad differs and believes that wearing a suit or jacket is enough of a Kevod Tzibur. Both opinions is correct because it is what the community regards as respectable as the representative.

@@TheJewishConvert some people are allergic to sulfites, so I wouldn’t say wine is the best. It’s not better or worse. Some people also can’t have alcohol because of medication they take, like me. I use grape juice for that reason. As long as it’s kosher, that’s the most important part.

MITOSI BDIMOSI A.Y.Y.R. It is an obligation for one who leads the service in a Synagogue to wear a Tallit. Similar to when you open the ark or get an Aliyah. Out of interest what Synagogue do you attend where this is not observed?

I am a baaley tshuva for many, many years (25) and also come from mixed background household .
I am a follower of Rabbi Nachman hakodosh , another words -- breslover.
I live in the U.S and mainly daven in Chabad and sometimes in Litvishe shuls .
As far as I know , wearing Talit at night is not observed by anyone , even -- reform -- :) . Because it is not an obligation to wear Tzizit or Talit at evening or night .
It is a day time Mitzva and that's why we wear Talit only in the morning service and some times afternoon , but never at night .
But it is now a Rabbinical Degree , to wear Tzizis at night also, but not Talit .
This is why I asked this question . Sholom u Bracha

MITOSI BDIMOSI A.Y.Y.R. Thanks for your reply. I love the discussion and questions so definitely don't be afraid to ask. I am Ashkenazi Modern Orthodox, but in South Africa this is observed by all orthodox shull's. I know that Chabad has different customs. Rav Google on this occasion was not very helpful, but will check with my Rabbi tomorrow B'zrat Hashem and provide some written sources for this Minhag 😉👍🏻🇮🇱

MITOSI BDIMOSI A.Y.Y.R. Also I have huge respect for a Baal Teshuva (someone that was not so religious before and returned to Judaism for those following this thread). I feel that converts can learn the most from Baal Teshuvas due to the fact that they also had to make a transition from not that religious to fully observant. May you go from strength to strength

    • @MayahdeVilliers
      @MayahdeVilliers 7 лет назад +2

Thanks chavrusas, I learn much from these discussions and questions.
The minhag of the leader wearing a tallis during his leading of the service, is an Ashkenazi minhag.
I learned that one who has been keeping minhagim, is generally obligated to keep to such minhagim, and that if they wanted to change a minhag, they needed to make an annulment of such.
My question: From what source and basis is one bound by a minhag?
