It’s so cool to see my race from your perspective! And listen, it’s not the climb that is hard or not, it’s the speed that makes it hard or harder. “Can it be harder than today’s stage?” Double Stelvio is a killer!! Always!
Very true, but following you at that pace was obviously the hardest Jasper has ever had to go! :) Awesome job by both of you guys. As an 80kg cyclist myself it's inspiring to see you both climbing so well, pure power! After the riding in the Dolomites I must visit the Stelvio myself, it looks amazing!
Jasper, I did the Gran Fondo Stelvio a few years ago while I was stationed in Italy with the US Army. It started in Bormio, went south down the valley, back up the valley, up the side of the Passo Mortirolo, then up the Stelvio. THAT, was the hardest thing I've ever done on a bike. It was June and there was still feet of snow at the top of the Stelvio. They had a SAG stop about 4 K's to the top, where there's a little memorial or Catholic monument or something on the side of the road. The support people were filling our water bottles from a snow-melt runoff stream. No kidding. It was rather refreshing actually. The scariest part of the Stelvio (from Bormio) is the approach to the switchbacks through all of the tunnels. First, we were getting soaked from the snow-melt dripping in the tunnels, which was super cold. But the worst part was that for about half an hour you get to look at what appears to be a vertical wall ahead of you with the switchbacks going up. It was daunting. The switchback section didn't end up being any steeper than anything else, I think I remember around 10-12%. It was just the anticipation of that section leading up to it. It looked like we were going to go up a vertical wall. I also climbed the Gavia from Bormio a few months later. I did that alone so I paced myself and didn't race like you did. BTW, most of the roads in Italy are trashed like you said. Funny memory at the top of the Passo Gavia. I have it on GoPro if I can find it. I reached the top where the lake and the buildings are and had to swerve around all of the cars and motorcyclists that were trying to stop or park. I came around a bend and there was a cow in the road with it's head inside the open top of a red Farrari convertible. It appeared to be knawing on the headrest cover or something. I would have stopped to take more video if I hadn't been so cold and ready to get off the mountain.
Gavia is the coldest part of Europe it's why you can ski on strlvio in summer.if you ever get a chance do the gavia from the other side, it's best to warm up on morirolo,go down other side to do the gavia The ponte di legno side will blow your mind.

When the offensive goal of the day is to attack and conquer Passo di Gavia, it’s vital to choose the right armaments.
