    if his chest is always so open towards the ball handler how does he keep from getting beat backdoor by quicker offensive players?

    • @Improbable
      @Improbable 7 лет назад +3

      I was going to ask something similar. If Tony is guarding against someone that cuts, I feel that the opponent could just fake towards the ball handler and then cut the other way. Since Tony has turned to the ball handler, if he ends up over committing to the ball handler side and losing ground if the man he is marking cuts.

      I wouldn't say it never happens to him, but the biggest key is his pattern recognition. He understands when guys are suppose to be in certain spots and move in plays

      Also, most players aren't great off ball cutters. So you must recognize when that is the case and take advantage. Most players ball watch on offense too. Few players watch and read their defenders

      So many great facts in this comment section he's been reading offensive for years to where he's studying the ball handlers reaction time while maintaining his defensive assignments.
      It's different when your on a hot lockdown rampage you see things much slower and notice mistakes and what breaks plays before players make the actual mistake. 💪🏾
      Hall of Fall for sure!

      Goes back to what he said about him reading the ball handler. He follow the ball handler eyes because most ball handlers tend to look for the pass especially once they stop dribbling. Elite passers however I wouldn’t recommend this technique because they can pass the ball without looking so it’s really a risk.

    seems like reaching for a steal with your body open also allows you more time to get to the ball, since the hand that will be reaching for the ball will be closer to your opponent than if you were to do so with a closed body

    Hey coach I really like the video! New subscriber. Could you do one on Bruce Bowen and klay Thompson? They are good at window washing where their hands are actively waving in circles trying to throw off the ball handler. Also when guards do full court pressure or pressure on the wing I've heard coaches tell athletes to shuffle shuffle when I have a kid get beat or picking up full court I teach the to cross over step to get back in front and beat their man to a spot. Keep the vids coming!

    I have a good question, as in the video, he "ball watches" I thought you aren't supposed to ball watch otherwise it leaves your matchup more opportunities to cut backdoor?

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  7 лет назад

      I agree that the opportunity to cut backdoor will be their if you ball watch. In Tony Allen's case however, he has such good pattern recognitions of plays and spacing, at this point in his career, he knows when he can narrow in on the ball handler. And of course, Tony Allen does get carried away and looses his guy, but as an aggressive defender you have to pick your spots.
      Also, at lower levels, I believe cutting is a skill and most players lack the ability to recognize when and where to cut. If your opponent isn't a good cutter, then it is your job to exploit that

    what do you say about only commiting on passing lines when the ball is in flight before lunging towards the ball? i think thats a safe way to not get beaten backdoor

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  7 лет назад

      You would need to be very close to the passing lane and your man for it to work, since reaction time would be vary limited and being closer to your man gives you the most time from flight of the ball to target. Also if you subscribe to this theory, I would teach guys to touch off ball, meaning; they should always be able to feel their man with an arm. This allows the players to watch the ball while sensing his man, while also keeping them accountable to staying in the correct position to get steals

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  7 лет назад

      In this defense, you would need great on-ball defense. If you can stop the ball, you won't need help and can implement this system
