My grandmother's grandparents fled to America then Scotland from Lithuania and had to hide their identities because they were Jewish my grandmother died in June and she was the last of her siblings to pass away I made sure she had a Lithuania flag thrown onto her coffin because she was proud of were she came from and I'm trying to find out more about my families heritage and where we came from as its important to us I think this is why I have a love of history thank you for sharing this

There's a lovely series called Island at War on RUclips which depicts the occupation. Also the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. So interesting, the people of the Islands behaved with such grace ❤

41:47 Not a "boat full of goodies." "Goodies" implies luxuries, and trivialises the Islanders' state of near-starvation.

The only saving grace was that a lot of the German troops posted to the Channel Islands eventually ended up on the Eastern front from June 1941where a great many of them met their demise. Mind you, some German troops were blown up at wars end clearing the mine fields, and set charges. At the end of WW2, the German troops were not Prisoners of War and covered by the Hague and Geneva conventions but defeated enemy status and had no exemption from doing dangerous tasks such as UXO ordinance removal and reconstruction duties and as forced labour in rebuilding programs in former occupied countries.
