I recently attended a seminar in my home dojo that featured Yamada Sensei. Let's just say my technique -er, wasn't up to snuff and he corrected me in front of a 100 people. :) I didn't quite get it right so he made sure that I understood, earning myself a Yamada love tap. It was definitely an honor and a learning experience.

Aikido is a strange place. Where people who do not really attack (and usually do not even know what an attack is) pretend to catch someone in their wrists like an attack. While the "defenders" (who are not defenders, since this presupposes a real attack!) Pretend to be an attack and project the energy of the attacker who does not attack. L 'Aikido could also be defined as a place where you can see people doing an elegant and harmonious ballet, full of concepts on real personal matters. Actually, very real.

I think you describe it very nicely, and with love, somehow. All the words are chosen right. This is the practice. It is people practicing in a practice setting, very real matters. And that is good. It is good that it is practice, and it is good that there is a direct link to reality.. The rest of worldy universal life, outside of aikido, with all its ego's, dangers, etc. :)

It's very simple. A defence/block etc is executed with the same mindset and core strength as the attack. No fear. It takes time and training to develop this but once the peripheral awareness has been achieved you can read your attacker's movements and respond effectively. Most people who are highly trained, avoid fighting or attacking so chances are the attacker is not that skilled and is in for a rude awakening. Be careful however, in training your uke trains to take the response and knows how to fall on a mat or block/avoid. In a street fight your attacker most likely DOESN'T know how to react to your defence and will sustain considerable injury. You DON'T want to go to jail or deal with a civil suit.
