    I have to admit that I’m privileged in this aspect. My sister became a licensed cosmetologist when I was 5 years old (support vocational education 😉). And she was GOOD at what she did. She taught me to care for my hair from the very beginning & how important it was to treat my hair a certain way. People thought this was special because my hair was always done, but it was bigger than that. I never had breakage, Raggedy Ann ends, and my hair didn’t fall out when she colored it. She gave up the shears & chair 😭😭😭 but the hair care standard sticks with me, so I can’t just go to ANY stylist. I grew up just thinking that people are reckless with their hair because they let any ole body STYLE their hair & nobody’s caring for it in the process. That’s why I have all my hair at 40. People don’t ask the questions you outlined in this video or take the time with their hair to care for it.

    Thank you so much my hair teacher. Where I live most salons just have "Hairdressers". They hardly know anything about the health of my coils ➿➿. Most of them only care about applying relaxers and fixing tight hair extensions. It's all about money for them. Some even refuse to trim 💇🏽‍♀️hair when needed. 1 main reason why I decided to care for my hair myself. These pointers have added to my knowledge and if I decide to visit a hair salon sometime in the future I now know exactly what to ask and look out for.

      @@GetGlamFam Very. I did relaxers for 10 years different times. Mostly I felt something was wrong. If I haven't fixed a weave it felt like my hair wasn't done. I always had thicker roots and my ends were getting splits. I'm glad I know much better now. I mostly thought there was something wrong having a tender scalp and thicker hair. I now understand why I didn't like hairstyles around my neck much because now I know I have an oily skin, sweat a lot, coarse strands, low porosity hair and high density hair. If we talking about hair typing I am more on the 4B side. Non of those hair dressers ever suggested I go Natural. Relaxers didn't last long my hair especially my roots. So by 3-4 weeks I had do reapplication. Here too they slather the relaxer all the way throughout the strands, use a very small blue tail comb and fingers to smoothen everything together. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Their hair dyers always had to be mostly hot 🔥 beyond my scalp's take. When they're prompted to turn the temperature down, they reluctantly mention "Your hair will take a loooooong time to dry". Making me stay in the dryers for longer. 😩 Then styling sometimes just pissed me off. Mostly 1 way styles or they will slather pink oil and lots of sealant to get my hair down again. I could tell I didn't like it. Sometimes I get home and redo my styles. I used to sleep on cotton pillowcases and get dandruff after keeping sew-in weaves for about a month. ☹️ It was a hustle. Something wasn't right but then that's all I knew. Never knew about sleeping on satin, stretching relaxers, having an oily skin which needed its own treatment etc. By 2018 I told myself enough was enough. I started doing my research on how to care for my scalp 1st then my hair. And I must say in less than 3 years my new growth is stronger and my scalp is way better than all those years with the hairdressers. It's a journey.

      Thank you! A consultation is super important. Even with my regulars, I would ask how they feel their hair and scalp is doing since the last visit, what we are doing today, and I check for abrasions on the scalp, areas of breakage, dandruff & sebhorreic dermatitis, and we build from there 😊

    Thank you for the tips, I'll try them when I'm ready to go back to a stylist. One of the things I need to look for is someone who understands skin disorders that may impact the scalp. I don't expect the stylist to treat the condition, that's why I see a dermatologist but it is helpful to know about counterindications.

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  4 года назад +5

      It’s important to understand scalp conditions for sure! If you don’t, you can easily make matters worse. That gives me a video idea! Thanks for your comment!

      @@GetGlamFam I think that it's a great idea for a video because I don't think a lot of stylists know or understand scalp conditions. For example, I have discoid lupus (only in my scalp) and I had a stylist once recommend that I should stop wearing hats to let my scalp get some air. I looked at her funny and reminded her that I have lupus and that I am photosensitive.

    I have come to the conclusion to go in not expecting to get what I want and if I do its a pleasant surprise if I dont its hair it will grow back. I have discussed literally for months, given photos, talked about modifications etc etc and still didn't get what I wanted. So now I look to a wig of the style is important to me otherwise I take what I get and move on. I know that is so sad but there is not a lot of linwoods out there. Communication is a 2 way street and the client can only do so much.

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  4 года назад +5

      I can definitely understand that. I feel like that’s a huge part of where being referred by a friend and things comes in. That way you know what that stylists strengths and weaknesses are.
      I have had many clients over the years that have had trust issues and needed some time to learn to trust me, so I totally understand that a stylist that communicates well is a rarity. It’s part of the reason I became an educator, I felt it was the only way I could make the impact I want to on the industry.

    I need to do this. I want a definitive consultation on if my strands are thin, med, or thick, what porosity, and all the other preliminary questions listed in this vid. I'm not into trendy cuts, color, or styles. Because of this, I haven't been to a stylist since the early 2000's. I care for my hair myself. I just want it to stay healthy. If it stays healthy it will always be good and look good to me. So far I haven't managed to destroy it but I would like to learn more about caring for it. I never want to think that I know it all. If you ever start doing hair again.I need you to do my natural hair. My stylist is very good but she's had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery. Her hair is gorgeous. She's into hair care instead of hair style. She's been at a while. But she has changed her schedule and I work.

    Hi Gleam Fam
    What hair treatment would you recomend for very, very fine 4b hair that breaks off at the ends. Hair is currently middle of back and very dry. Great vid 👍👍💝

    Linwood I've been taking your advice about moisturizers with glycerin in it and that you shouldn't use those in the winter...the the problem is most of them HAVE glycerin in them...HELP!! My hair's relaxed by the way...

      Carol’s Daughter makes a product called “Healthy Hair Butter” it doesn’t have any humectants. It’s water based, but contains oils, so you may not need to use as much being as though you are relaxed.

    Hi Linwood! First of all, your baby is adorable!🧡. There’s a popular RUclips cosmetologist suggested that we should detangle our natural hair while dry with oil, only. So, do we supposed to detangle our hair while it’s wet or dry with oil?

    I love them. My hair is messed up, between the humidity and the heat here, my hair is always busted. Help. What do you suggest. The last time my hair looked nice was when I went to NY. I’m older a silver maybe you have some helpful ideas.

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  4 года назад +7

      I would recommend using a quality moisture shampoo and conditioner, then seal your hair with an oil or a silicone. Try to opt for low heat styles, and if you are pressing your hair, save that moreso for the cooler months of the year.
      Regular deep conditioning can be a massive help as well 😊🙏🏽

      @@GetGlamFam thank you so much, I haven’t put heat on my hair about a year now, I do use curl la-la and water and pull back with a clip, then braid before bed. I am waiting for cooler days. Thank you so much for the quick response. You and your wife are wonderful.

    Linwood, you are a phenomenal educator on haircare. I have never had a stylist as knowledgeable as you. I'm a new subscriber, so I don't know if you're currently doing hair or not. I see that you're an instructor, but please let me know if you're accepting clients and where you're located. I'm in Houston TX but I will gladly come to you. If you're not accepting new clients, I would certainly appreciate it if you can provide me a referral to a skilled cosmetologist. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone and God bless you.

    How I wish that you were able to do my hair!
    I have had so many bad experiences with hairstylists who claim to be able to do my hair. I have very dense, 3C/4A hair, and people either fear touching it or just want money and aren't honest about their skills and experience that they lack. I’ve had the one where they say - we are black so of course we can do your hair. I've taken pictures and they still managed to ruin my hair or they just did whatever they wanted to my hair without listening to me.
    They've complained about how thick my hair was and struggled with it. Burnt my scalp, and singed my hair because of how hot the iron was. Ignored me when I told them they were braiding the hair too tight. Asked me if I had a white daddy. Just so rude! You would think that black people could do black hair but obviously not. They think that being black is a qualification. I'm so anxious about getting my hair done, dread it! But my hair needs something. So I will take all of your tips and keep searching for the right place

    I only may have had 2 hair stylist that ever gave me a confrontation.. Most of them ask me what i want and just either do it or give me what they think i should have. I stop going to beauty shop for years. Because the last person. Before the person i have now.. Bleached my hair blond then put a relaxer in it 2weeks later and i went home and my hair start falling out in patches in my hand. I freaked out. It took me 10 yrs before i let somebody else to my hair.. Until.3 yrs ago. My husbands father was infatuated with my hair. I seen his shop& his work and he does good work. So i start letting him do my hair. Now my hair is healthy and growing... But lately i been doing my own hair. I go to him for a trim or wash unless i am going some place special. Then he does my hair..

    Thanks! I love my stylists personality but I am sometimes disappointed when I go to see her. I may have to let her go. She usually does sew ins or relaxers (which I don't have). Even when I get a straight style, my hair is weighed down and looks crazy.

    omg the on the phone when getting a haircut. I am in cosmo school and A teenage girl kept her head down in her phone the entire time when I tried to give her a cut I kept telling her I need her hair to be straight and she just kept doing it lol...needless to say the haircut was not perfection.

    Anytime you get highlights, that is high maintenance. I had highlights and I was at the salon on a weekly basis, because highlights can be very damaging if not taken care of properly.

    I need help! I am in the military and I have natural hair. I am also stationed in Washington state and I have so many questions. My first is how do I tell if my hair is moisturizer? And I also know that I need a trim but I’m scared that some is going to cut to much and I don’t really know any good stylist around me. And I just moved here.
