At the dawn of the third age of mankind this space station served a pivotal role in interstellar diplomacy and key military engagements. This port of call open to refugees, smugglers, entrepreneurs and wanderers from hundreds of worlds is the last best hope for peace in a war-torn galaxy.

    B5 was and is the greatest TV-based sci-fi show ever. The writing, the acting, the 5 year arc.......fantastic. There will never be another show quite like it. The cast was indescribably great. The story was compelling and gripping. And the "Great Maker" was a genius. I love the show, and love watching it time and again.

      I knew it was gold made on a budget at the time.
      In retrospect it’s quite remarkable how much the first true US TV space opera shaped the sci-fi landscape of today.
      Without B5, we might not have got The Expanse or BSG.

    The Newtonian physics of Starfury combat and the O’Neil cylinder design set my imagination going more than the less realistic sci-fi’s of my childhood. B5 was the first long-form TV series that laid the groundwork for so many of the great stories we love today.

    Even with all the modern scifi shows made since then, and some of them really good, I keep coming back to Babylon 5. It continues to be one of the best scifi shows ever made. It has great characters with proper arcs, some of them as heroes to look up to, and some of them with tragic falls from grace. It's well written, well cast, well acted, and well planned, with huge wars and deeply personal stories. It was even cheap to make and easy to shoot for the cast and crew, who could often make it home to have dinner with their family. Truly lightning in a bottle.

    I've been Babylon 5-fed since I was a child, I'm 32 now, and loving this show really makes me feel kinship with all those older people that love it too haha
    This series has poetry, deep thought, tearjerkers, some form of innocence, from time to time, and there aren't enough nouns and adjectives to describe the full scale of the experience.
    I will always cherish B5.
    It is my home.
    It is carved into my DNA now.
    I hope many more get to taste this gem, and I have the impression that this series is getting some light shed on it recently, am I wrong?

  • @Tetsujinhanmaa
    @Tetsujinhanmaa Год назад +8

    This will always be my favourite sci-fi show of all time. Because the writing was, and is, the best I've ever seen. JMS planned everything out. The entire story, every arc was meaningful. Seeing a small detail or inconsequential comment come back to roost 2 seasons later was beautiful. And the use of 'trapdoors' for every character was amazing.
    I truly hope JMS can exert full control and give us another great story.

    • @kawh8719
      @kawh8719 Год назад

      I'd love to hear more about the character 'trap doors.' Sinclair and Delen share the same door, but in opposite directions. Sheridan is space Jesus, Bester seems heatless, but he actually cares too much, Garibaldi is Space Judas. What are some others?

    • @Tetsujinhanmaa
      @Tetsujinhanmaa Год назад

      @@kawh8719 No, the trap doors were 'outs' for the actors. If an actor wanted to leave the show, they had an prewritten that could remove them without hurting the story too much. IIRC the only used Talia's in the show. Lyta then took over Talia's role. The only thing that was hurt was a romance between Talia and Ivanova.

    • @erikbjelke4411
      @erikbjelke4411 Год назад

      It's actually referenced a few times. Delenn tells Sebastian that if she dies during his inquisition, another will take her place. Justin tells Sheridan the Shadows can't kill him, because someone else would come along and replace him. JMS understood the vagaries of television production, and knew that an actor might suddenly become unavailable for a variety of reasons, so had plans in place to jettison any character and replace them. It's been said that Vir could step into Londo's shoes and fill his arc, but I'm not entirely sold on that, I think it more likely another Centauri would be sent to replace Londo as the ambassador to Babylon 5, and slid into Londo's role of having made his Faustian bargain with the Shadows.
      It's genius, really. The show holds up so well, even against modern Myth Arc dramas, because everything was planned out in advance, but there was still room to nudge things in different directions, adapt to the realities of making a TV show, so things wouldn't suddenly fall apart if someone left.

    As always, great stuff Elaine. My favourite character was Walter Koenig's Alfred Bester. Mr. Koenig's best work. I didn't learn until recently that Straczynski named him after the famous sci-fi writer. B5 had some of the best acting I have ever seen. Fingers crossed the reboot goes ahead.

    I still think one of my favorite B5 moments us when they are breaking away from EA, and they fend off the first attack only to have a second fleet appear. Just when all looks lost, Delen jumps in with the Grey fleet and tells EA that B5 is under Minbari protection. Then tells the EA fleet only one human ever beat a Minbari fleet in battle (John Sheridan) and that he is behind her, they are in front of her and if they value their lives they should be elsewhere. Actually, the whole Earth civil war and G'Kar and Londo's stort were my most favorite parts of the show.

    The episode “severed dreams” where Babylon 5 declares its dependence then fights an epic battle against the new military dictatorship on earth is the most eye poppingly amazing hour of TV I have ever seen. They built up to that episode over two and a half seasons. It was unprecedented at the time and I’m still amazed that the networks let them pretty much complete the 5 year story arc. Babylon 5 helped me get through the roughest time in my life and the love that I have for that show and the character development will stay with me forever…

    I was in the Lurkers forums as this came out. The show was great, but the interaction between creator and audience has not been equaled until “The Expanse” podcasts came out. That show owes a huge debt to B5 showing that a hard-sci-fi show could succeed. B5 is better, and complete, but The Expanse somehow feels more reachable. Time to go watch “And the Rock Cried Out” again!

    I think there exists a misconception about the size of the stations. The 5 miles figure is actually for a part of the stations. The real size being like 8 miles.
    Spacedock talked about it in their recnt video :"Why do Sci-fi ships seem to change size". Which is a general look at sizing issues in sci fi visual media.

So to me I think they were asked about their form of government and they just picked one at random from a list given to them as none of the forms fitted or it didn’t matter.
    If I had to pick what form of government I thing the vorlons May used ied probably go with something like Noocracy aka rule by the wise.
