we were sooo innocent as to the cartoons we watched. and this one is older than I am by several years!! today's kids tend to like these too, my grandkids do!
I sang it in choir at a church school. So why do left-wing provocatures see "racism" everywhere, even in this song? Could it be because there is so much hatred in thier hearts? Could it be that they bring theri own supply of racism with them?
@@gregbowman4043 probably because lots of people try and hide racism and ignore cartoons like these in favor of "the good old days." this cartoon definitely isn't the WORST as there are far more racist cartoons out there, but this song is still racist and that's how it's gonna be, it's not just those scary left-wing people saying it's racist. give me a break, dude!
There were similar cartoons with this story/theme...One involving candy people and the other involving fruits & vegetables... The songs are Ain't She Sweet and Yes We have No Bananas.
This actually took me back to the days when there were only 7 channels. Remember follow the bouncing ball cartoons? That's how far back I go. Thanks for the memories.
Anyone else sees a resemblance to the tune used in the "Gaston" song from Beauty and the Beast? This particular verse: "No one's slick as Gaston No one's quick as Gaston No one's neck's as incredibly thick" as Gaston
Interesting Max Fleischer cartoon. I remember this famous song on children's favorites volume 2 and hearing in the Donald Duck cartoon 3 for breakfast.
IN-FUCKIN'-CREDIBLE. I'm a 65 yr. old Black man raised in the American South with this song AND this cartoon. I remember them from my childhood. To see them now makes me say we've come soooooo far, bless America's heart. But with Donald Trump & his minions? American still has SUCH a way to go. God help her on our journey!
It's been 50 yrs since I've seen these shorts in theaters. I don't know why some of them can't bring them back. I think people would get a kick out of them. Of course this song couldn't possibly be shown. (Too racist) OK everyone, follow the bouncing ball.
Shortnin' Bread is a bit shorter than the other Screen Songs. Have all the extant versions perhaps been edited for content? I was wondering - were the "mammy" and "chillun" always white, or has this been altered from the original?
Yes, the "mammy" and "chillun" were always white. It was never in any way altered. The only Screen Song to my knowledge that was ever "tampered" was the one called "MacNamara's Band". Sung in the cartoon, "The Emerald Isle", the song was originally aired in its entirety during the early 1960s, then in the mid 60s for some reason the song was removed from the cartoon entirely with no explanation.
"Shortnin' Bread" is a folk song from the 1800s created by the black community. So I don't see it as racist. Unless you're saying black people were racist towards themselves?
Many find everything and everyone to be racist, but ignore the one reflected in their own mirror. It is an old-time song to entertain children, not the marching chant of BLM members, who are the epitome of racism circa 2017.
Though I'm only in my mid 20s, I grew up on old stuff like this. Really nothing compares.
Same friend.

Dot Warner: That tune sure is catchy.
Yet slightly racist.

Why is nobody talking about how we literally saw three cookies fall to their death?
then casually singing about a dead child happily😬

well I be it's the desserts from Little Audrey's cartoon where she helped the gingerbread man get married to Angel food cake

We use to sing that in Elementary school in the 70's.

The 1950's NTA logo is included on both the opening and closing titles of this and other pre-50 Paramount cartoons.
Yeah, remastered for television broadcast. We weren't ever to see the original Paramount mountain opening.

Shortnin' Bread is a song sung by colored folk. Those white bread kids look so out of place.

Why do I only see the NTA Prints.
You list the copyright year as 1948, but the video says 1950.
The line says one is sick in bed and the other one is dead! Doesn't that mean anything to the kids who are listening to this?
He's not dead, it is revealed later that his eyes had been shut like he'd been dead. Listen to the rest of the song and you would know this.
