Hey, I’m an African American woman and I lived in Ceret for ten years. I have been living in France for 42 years. I am now living in Bordeaux. Nice to see you showing the village some love plus it’s close to Spain we used to go to Barcelona on day trips.

Hi and thank you for sharing your experience traveling around the world. I'm a Black American and I swear it's wonderful to watch so many of my countrymen and ladies traveling the world. I just wanted to wish you well on your beautiful journey. I also wanted to ask if you miss anything about living in the States? Btw I'm also considering moving to France for retirement. It's been a dream of mine to live my life in Europe. And France sounds like a great choice. And that's despite all the bureaucracy in that country. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. And best wishes.

Hello ladies. I am a young AA woman and I also love to hear of our success. I have traveled to Europe & love it. Other than being a student, how does one get their foot into the door to get a visa to live abroad. It seems such a complex and expensive process. My soul longs for peace & for my children to grow up in a place where they can enjoy life without fear of violence and persecution because of their skin color.

We're now exploring France, Italy and Spain for a permanent home. We'll now include both towns on our list. Having both France and Spain in your life must be joyous. Our families back in Australia think we're mad but heck you only live once and who says life shouldn't be full of adventures in your 60s! Enjoy life.

Due to inflation, America has become a very expensive place to live. The average rent for a small apartment in many places in America is $1,500-$2,500 a month. Rent is-$3,500-$7,500 or more is some large cities. The average cost for homes in many affluent places in America is $1M. The cheapest homes are around $400,000. Average salaries have not caught up. Many Americans will never be able to afford to buy home. There is a huge substance abuse and homeless problem in America. Crime is out of control. Many reasons to leave.

Huh. I read comments below so many European expat videos where everyone blames everything on immigrants and are so angry about them. In many of these places, the immigrant populations are tiny and crime, for example, hasn't really changed much. What has changed a bit? The color of some people's skins... Right-wing groups growing, politicians being elected. Unfortunately, yeah, Natherlands, too, has those emerging issues. I'm a huge fan of The Netherlands, and have been researching that, too (for retirement). Same issues. Portugal, Malta, Spain. Check. Even France. I wish Patricia would do a deep dive on that. I love Italy but it has serious economic issues, as evidenced by young people fleeing. Don't want to be anywhere near Russia. Looking closely at Crete. Been there and love it. But I have studied Greek and it's a real challenge; not necessarily to read, but to speak. And the bureaucracy in so many places is such a headache; not so much for visitors... Have looked at Mexico, central and S. America, too, but not for me. I find European history, culture, food...everything...so much more fascinating and appealing. Maybe someday I'll find the answer. Well, best wishes to you!

@@izzytoons I am American and moved to France 7 years ago. Immigration is a result of elites - nobody asked for it. Is there a problem with Islam? Yes. It's not about color - it's behavior and the ethical practices of cultures. If people didn't think there is a civilizational clash, they wouldn't be voting for the "right wing" party. There seems to be an assumption on your part that people believe the issue with Arabs for example is fabricated or exaggerated. Having lived here and worked with Arabs for years both in France in the US, you are their enemy in their eyes.

Not to mention, I'm also considering a move to either Italy or France now that I am at a pre-retirement stage of life. Hey there, I'm a half Brit half French guy and live not far from Céret (in the Conflent area). Céret is a lovely small town, very trendy, the museum of modern art with all the Picasso work, the bull fights during the Feria, the ambiance of a North Catalunya community, the Mediterranean sea just down the road, the border with Spain just a few miles away. Lovely spot! I might bump into you one of these days 😀

Patricia you are making France feel like the best idea for an American that would like to broaden their horizons. I've considered Portugal, France and Ireland. I'm curious has anything about leaving America been regretful since moving to France? And has it been difficult learning to speak french?
Thank you Patricia for sharing your journey. You are influencing people to go after their dreams. That is a blessing.

With all its popularity and favorably digitial nomad and retirement taxes, Portugal has gotten much more crowded over he past five years, and prices have gotten more expensive, especially for housing. The Portuguese have become much less eager to encourage immigrants, because of what their presence has done to costs. That's why they killed the special tax schemes for immigrants. Shame. We were looking seriously there, right before the summer when it literally went up in flames. Climate change is also an issue. Ireland does require $100K income, so that may/may not be a factor... Weather is less than perfect, and there's concern that Atlantic ocean currents, which are changing, may bring less warmth to Ireland. France has been and continues to be shifting rightward politically, growing more and more inward looking and anti-immigrant. Wish Patricia would give a deep, honest look at that. Same with Spain, Malta, The Netherlands. Closer to Russia seems a risk. Looking closely at Crete now. Been there and it's wonderful. The Greek language, with an entirely different alphabet, and more, is a hurdle. And I worry about spending so much time with lawyers, interpreters, and accountants getting the simplest, most routine, frequent things done during my retirement, due to the crushing, soul-sucking bureaucracy, at least as described by those who live/have lived there. People like Patricia, and issues here in America, do keep me searching and weighing the pros and cons, though... Last, I hear all these claims about how inexpensive housing is in these places, but when you go and actually look at the prices people claim they aren't really there, at least not in the places I would want to be...

@izzytoons thanks for your thought provoking comment. An increase in demand does increase prices. The right is growing here too, with Le Pen getting more votes in the last election than the one 5 years earlier. No place is perfect; however, finding a place that feels good helps even when some things might not be ideal. I'll see what I can do to create a video about this.

@@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst Thank you for responding. I would love to consider France, Spain, and The Netherlands more, but I do worry about the right. Spain had very progressive LGBTQ+ legislation in '22, and just one year later another absolutely shocking. You are now legally allowed to beat a trans person so long as you leave no visible injuries. If you or I were to intervene and that required phsyical contact, we in turn could be charged with assault. Let that sink in. And that's just LGBTQ+. The whole reason I am looking to leave the U.S. is to retire in peace somewhere. Problem is, peace is under threat everywhere, it seems. Ack! Thanks again for your work. I really didn't expect you to respond! :)

I'm very happy for you and enjoy so much the way you present yourself on camera as an educated woman with no axe to grind, at least not in this video. Chances are I'll never be able to follow in your footsteps as my wanderlust train left the station many years ago. I did visit France in the 1980s and really enjoyed it. The language is beautiful, but one needs to be pretty talented in learning new languages to speak a challenging language like French. I admire you for learning to do it. Do you read and write it, too? All the best!

Thank you for saying this. Such wonderful thoughts. I never thought I would speak French since I was told that my brother got the language learning genes, which I took to mean "and you, Patricia don't have them. What it took was a change in what I believed about myself around learning languages and a reason (moving to France and wanting to speak this beautiful language)to buckle down and be consistent with language learning. I do read and write it also, but with plenty of typos and mistakes. 🫢

I think there should be more information here….the price you pay for rent, is it typical for what you have in 2024? Do you have heat/cooling in every room(some old places can be pretty chilly and pretty hot) and how much are they used? Do you pay extra for water? Are there other factors that affect the cheapness of your apartment? Ie: where it is situated, what it is next door to, what is above or below, etc. Does it include a place to park your car? Do you have a washer and dryer? How old everything is inside… just by telling everyone that you pay that price in your situation does not mean anyone can get an apartment for that price….also, if you speak French, it might’ve easier to negotiate a rental price or get accepted into an apartment.
