Yung Lean is unbelievably good if you understand his music. A lot of people don’t get it the first time around. I didn’t. But now, I’m obsessed with drain and sad boys, they’re so underrated. Making music makes helps you understand how great they are. Puts into perspective.
The thing about Yung Lean is that he basically changed the aesthetic of the entire rap game, or at least a huge portion of it, which in itself is impressive enough, especially when you consider his influence is so far reaching that there are probably a lot of artists who are stylistically influenced by him that don't even realise it, even in the mainstream. But since then he's also put out so much good quality writing that, realistically, most people, even his fans, didn't really expect. His lyrics are super poetic and his ear for melodies is great. I still don't really think out he puts out great albums, but on his day (Red Bottom Sky, Blue Plastic, Boylife in EU) he can write as good as anybody. He's a quality artist with years ahead of him still, and he did more for music in his first few years than most famous artists do in two decades.
Facts I agree with you. I have a hunch Yung Lean has not reached his peak yet. He’s staying true to himself and perfecting his craft. He’ll get his recognition sooner or later
He's one of my favorites. He's a disciple of Lil B like a lot of those young rappers from the early 2010s. I would be shocked if he wasn't influenced by him
I think what he means by role players can boil down to two things. Lean is from Sweden and he and Sad Boys have so much respect because they know what part of hip hop culture they fit into and don't try to be overbearing about it. Think other white rappers like Mac and Em, they play a role for the culture and dont overplay how much of a role they have. They never portray an image that's not them. The second thing it boils down to is that Lean and co hit a sound of rap not many can do. I can't imagine anyone else making say Unknown Death 2002 or Starz.
Very true. Yung lean is a legend because instead of trying to ride the wave of the sad boys era he reinvented himself with every release and not only that he stayed true to who he is and where he’s from. His aesthetic and his music reference swedish culture in ways anyone not familiar would have to research to see. He’s a true artist in that sense that he stayed honest with himself and didnt let the fame change him.
