I get the sense that the Discord devs knew what they were doing when they named the platform Discord.
I bet that most people who think they know what "discord" means think it means the same thing as "discussion"
I mean discourse and discord sound similar so people would make this mistake easily

i mean personally i use it for mostly gaming and keeping up with online friends its a good chat platform unlimited calls and videos and messages without ads pretty good offer imo

Also, re Keffals, in that case while doxxing is not right, Keffals should be arrested (but not for the false "charges" the bit was referring to). Keffals peddled illegal (often home made) hormone "medicine" to minors without the parent's consent or knowing.

It was great in the early days because it was one of the few social media apps where you could openly discuss anything without fear of censorship. That was both a blessing and a curse as you can imagine.
Which is why I think this RUclipsr is making a tempest in a teapot (about uncensored conversations--hacking is truly a serious matter). Of course some conversations are going to horrify the morality police. That's nothing new.

11:30 Discord's security is a joke. What kind of communication platform doesn't have encrypted messaging, even direct conversations between 2 people, and says they will never add encryption? Right to be forgotten is clearly ignored with fake account deletion. It is only Discord's team that are at fault for the service's unsafe system.
As for the massive amount of cybercrime, I don't see Discord's role in it to be a big deal. If it weren't Discord, they would find another communication network, it's not something Discord can necessarily control, though Discord should improve the security of server invites to avoid some phishing attempts.

@@_sandy_ I gave up and just left the servers I was in, now I'm in like 3x including mine. If I meet a nice being on a game I'm playing I offer them to join my server then I add them to my player pool.

I don’t know if it is a sign that I have gotten old, but I have tried Discord and always found it to be convoluted and confusing to use.
Nah, it's not age. It happened to me too.
The trick I used to get used to it was to pick a server and stick to it for weeks.
For me, that was a server of a game dev who happens to be my friend and rival. Got to learn a lot from him and the other members. As months went by, I checked out other servers like that.
Although I ALWAYS avoid servers with too many channels. They can be so overwhelming.😑😑
I avoided it for years. Recently, I got an invite from someone whose work I followed, and toughed it out, navigating through the unfamiliar waters. It's not too bad once you get to the other side.
I'm old myself, so I get what you mean.

I mean to be fair its a good platform for GIF memes or linking images or having casual conversations that a lot of people can join. So its not shit at everything.

I remember back when the app was starting, I was one of the first users. I found out about it through ads when it was only months old. It was like the Wild West, but it was fun and good at the end of the day. They started censoring the hell out of that app and now it is pretty bland and woke.

I just downloaded Discord not that long ago, I don't use it b/c of the toxic reasons thankfully. But I just use it b/c just to chat & hang out, I try to stay away from the toxicness as much as I can despite being still hesitant about Discord as a whole.
I am 19 years old using Discord btw so I am just an ordinary human being that does not want anything from anyone, just a little "in case you didn't know"

Really? My account doesn't tie into my real identity at all. It didn't require a phone number. (Just checked. Says I haven't added one yet, and I'm not going to.) This is the only way I'll register on questionable sites like Discord. If the login info has to lead to any part of who I am, I'll stay away. The email I use for such accounts doesn't tie to me IRL either.

Always had a bad feeling about Discord, even as I used it daily when it first got popular. It was a fast and easy game chat platform for earlier online multiplayer games that did not have an audio chat function (yes, those existed)
Based on my experience, nothing in this is a surprise. Mods were always biased degenerates and most of the problem when it came to doxxing and other harassment.
Had a mod straight up tell me they had my IP address and would send cops to my house.
Wasn't even trying to troll, just discussing an opinion they did not like with someone else.
Now every time I see 'Join our Discord!' I have a little chuckle and go back to my life.

12:52 It's not really unusual, every corporations does that, they claim it's for "legal purposes" but there is nothing like that, they are just trying to make you stop questioning it. If you are in the EU you can actually file a complaint to consumer protections since what they are doing is against the GDPR, and they'll eventually have to concede or get fined.
I was in the whyfiles youtube channel discord and there are hackers in that server who hacked my computer and to this day they are still on my computer. i don't use discord anymore. All of this is real and it is very serious.
