- We take Oliver, our rescued Clydesdale horse, down to our homesteads river for the first time to swim! We are excited to get him started with swimming as it benefits horses in so many different areas! Because Oliver had EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephlitis) and is still healing, swimming will specifically be helpful to him.
in recovery. Swimming gives the horse a highly effective full body workout; improving general fitness, joint flexion and respiration. Depending on water level, the buoyancy of the water reduces concussion and impact on the lower limbs, and encourages an increased range of motion. The high resistance of the water leads to increased muscle activity, and the water pressure helps to reduce swelling, stimulate circulation of the lower limbs and the cold water helps to reduce any pain present. For Oliver, this is great! And SO beneficial. We also use swimming horses as a means of training. It is especially helpful in starting young horses. We will be doing alot of Olivers first training sessions here in the water. Swimming horses makes an easy and enjoyable learning experience for all. And a safer experience as well!

We are all about raising and training our horses, the Missouri Foxtrotter. Our goal is to bring awareness to this breed and showcase just how wonderful they are! @@ponispal you're aware that a bit is not used to hurt animals but to keep them kinda under control because they can kill anyone just within a swipe?
Can you keep control over 800kg if it flips a switch? Better to hurt or kill other individuals just to prevent a bit? Ridiculous!

Amazing he was not trying to buck them off. In movie 1863 the Indians show them how to break a wild stallion in the river.
You can see the trust and love he has for you JR. Oliver is a beautiful and special boy. I had a golden retriever that had ACL surgery on her knee and I would take her to a swimming hole on a creek for her water therapy. A good memory for me. Thank you.

JR, Even just walking up to his chest is great exercise for Oliver. He doesn't necessarily have to swim to help him build up those back legs and back muscles after his bout with EPM. Swimming is part of training not just for building muscles. Next video we will try to explain it a bit more. Or you can go back and watch some of our other training videos in the river that talk about it.
@Homestead Horsemanship I understand that. I utilize a huge pond for backing a horse in the heat of summer myself. But for Oliver, even just walking in chest deep water will help him recover from his EPM. That's why I made my comment, Emory. Best Regards from your friend, Jenn. 💖
@@jenniferlehman326 I absolutely agree with you. One step at a time, gently gently with Oliver is definitely going to be more beneficial. He’s only 2 and just a baby, let him grow and heal fully before riding him.
I’m not taking anything away from JR, his care of Oliver is absolutely mind blowing. His veterinary treatment, complete commitment to Oliver, the obvious love he has for his boy. He couldn’t be in better hands, he’s absolutely beautiful and healing so well. I’m just not agreeing with backing horses when they are still babies and still growing.
I’m the first to say how incredible JR’s horses look and praise him on his devotion, I’m just sad that he backs them too soon. 😔
@Dream Catcher Especially with Clydesdales, they can start pulling light, very light loads at 2, but ridden work shouldn't be done, in my experience with draft breeds, until they are at least 4. This allows the growth plates to totally solidify in their legs at that age. But that's just been my experience. Best Regards, Jenn 💖

My goodness OLIVER is really starting to fill out & look like he should. Still has a little way to go mainly on his hind quarters but he doesn't look anything like what he did when you first brought him home. He looked so sad & sick back then. Now he is unrecognizable to that poor little near death angel that you rescued just in the nick of time!! Bravo!!! WELL DONE OLIVER & H.H.

Me too. Can't wait to see how the foals react to the water when they are ready to go to the river. I love watching other videos of horses splashing in the water, they are so silly when they play in the water. You really seem to have an idyllic property for your homestead, a piece of paradise. I'm so happy for your (redneck, lol) family. So nice to have a brother from Italy. Both of my children studied in Italy for a whole semester when they attended Syracuse University. My son and his family are leaving in a few days for two weeks in Italy. Almost 20 years later.
