I'm proud of you Mike for promoting yourself in this video! I know it comes hard for you, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and it wasn't disrupting the material at all. You deserve to promote your website, it's your life's work. Keep growing!
You’re so awesome man, not talking about your drumming (although that is awesome as well). You have been around so long and always make learning drumming so fun. Thanks for all you do.
You’re Groove freedom book has helped me out tremendously with these kind of rhythms, and my ghost notes. I use ghost notes in almost every song I play, and it makes them sound so much better. I wish that book was still available, but your online lessons have helped me out a lot as well.
I've been working on independence with my private teacher now since 2019 and I know that feeling you mentioned of working working working and then BAM! It's a great feeling.
there are alot of great educators and players here on RUclips but Mike its always you're lesson I actually bother to sit down, digest and explore because alot of what you teach is soooo applicable. you've inspired me just to focus on the basic because thats what everything's built off, you taught me that like no other educator has
What a cool exercise. And obviously I'm not surprised it is cool 🙃 You're one of a kind man. Brilliant drummer and brilliant teacher. What I love about your exercises is that they're fun (even if they're complex and hard) I'm pretty much a hobbyist drummer, but never had more fun learning and practicing something than when it's your lesson/exercise. Whenever you post something it always makes my day. Thank you!
Brother that is so freaking awesome I truly love watching your drum you’re so joyful to watch I am so gonna practice this one thank you sir. If you’re ever touring come to Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada I will be first in line!
How nice it sounds Mike... it sounds like a Brazilian samba... I find it hard to keep up with the rhythm and independence, I need it slower, I'm going to help myself with the score. Thanks Mike, Regards.
Such an amazing one! I think what I love the most is the structure, you actually repeat the first 3 beats (taking out the first kick), which means backbeat displacement later. So tasty... And if you want to get into cruel territory, whenever there's 2 consecutive kicks, replace the second one with a ghost note. Also 4:54: did you mean to play these extra fills? :P
So glad you enjoyed it Nix! Yes, I was playing in 8 bar phrases. 8 bars of the exercise, followed by 8 bars of improvisation. One of the ways that I know "I have it" is when I can freely go in and out of the exercise or whatever it is that I'm working on. Freedom is ALWAYS the goal :) Hope that helps - Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵
I am taking Mike Lesson's since more than one year now and I think that's the best investment I've made so far concerning drumming. Absolutely recommend it. Btw what kind of hi hat is that ? Is that the foundry reserve 15" ?
It didn't work for me either until I put a TON of hours into it. Start with one of my beginner independence courses and work your way up to this. You got this! Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵
Hi, becoming a big fan! I saw some of your older videos on developing bass drum technique. Do you mostly pivot from your hip flexor muscle, or use the ankle? There's lots of opinion out there..confusing...thank you.
Hi Mr. Johnston, really random question: do you think it would work teaching improv with sampling pads? You can put in some small musical phrases and just have students trigger the samples by hitting the pads in time. I feel like it's a good way of understanding how improvisation works and taking away the scariness of it. Awesome lesson as always. I love your delivery and you are a true inspiration :)
So…it’s great and all but suggestions for approaching learning this? Just sit down and play it. You touched on this a little at the very end but perhaps you could elaborate. Thanks
I mentioned in the middle of the lesson that if this one is too difficult to start with then I have a bunch of independence courses that will slowly build you up to this. This lesson is for advanced drummers that have worked on their independence constantly for 5-10 years.
That’s a great question. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite work like that. I was able to hit the goal tempo on my first time trying it, but that’s not the full story. The truth is I practiced the exercises that led up to me being able to play this for years and years. That’s what my independence courses are based on. I hope that helps my friend :-)
This is probably a rookie question but: for this to be an independence exercise do I need to start the right hand an hat and then try to lay the kick and snare over top of them, or can I break the rhythm down piece by piece, see where everything syncs up and then memorize it? I typically learn things the latter way, but I wonder if that's really training my independence if I don't force myself to hold one pattern while I overlay the next one. Do you see what I am asking?
Great question Josh. The short answer is no. This is actually the oldest Transition Ride. This is the final prototype, the one I actually approved to become my signature ride 8 years ago. - Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵

Robert... thank you so much for the kind words. I love teaching and I appreciate the fact that anyone wants to watch me do it :)

This has to be the best independence exercise I've heard. So groovy, so Garibaldi'sh. I'll have fun with this one.

I love that you played this with some music in the background towards the end…very helpful 👏🏻
Can’t wait to add this this to my independence routine (from Mike’s Lessons of course). Thank you Mike!

Love it Mike ! Thanks !!!
those bass hoops 👌👌great lesson as always!
It was the finishing touch that the kick needed to make it "my kit". Added them about 2 weeks ago so THANK YOU for noticing 🙏🍵🙏
Killer video and lesson Mike!
I'm not a note reader but I do carefully listen. Love the pattern and will definitely give it a go.👍

Love this exercise. Any chance we can get a link to the backing track you were jamming to?

Awe man… 🙏🙏🙏. And yes, those are indeed the 15” Foundry Reserve Hats.
👍Thank you…
I didn't have to try that to know that it won't work. 🙃
Definitely a really cool excersise/groove 🤗

Mike, I have to know. How long did you practice this before you were able to hit the goal tempo?
That’s a great question. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite work like that. I was able to hit the goal tempo on my first time trying it, but that’s not the full story. Please join us mere mortals on this amazing planet. "It's much harder than it sounds". No Mike, it sounds frikkin hard too. Challenge accepted 🍻✌️
This one is haaaaaaard.
YO!!! It definitely pushed the boundaries between intermediate and advanced, but once you have it down... pure butter!
Чëтко!
It's a biscuit, served warm and fresh from Mike Johnston Cracker Barrel!
What app are you using on IPAD as a metronome?
What ride is that!? Is another signature in the works?
Hi Mike, is there a name for the hi-hat pattern you do here, sounds like moeller triplets but not quite?
Random question: did you get a new ride? What’s the Custom marking on top?
Great question Josh. The short answer is no. This is actually the oldest Transition Ride. This is the final prototype, the one I actually approved to become my signature ride 8 years ago. - Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵
yessssssss like all the yessssss.
LOL! Much appreciated dear friend. Miss ya dude
when you cover the name Remo, you should be sure to cover Ambassador as well, if you show your snare from above........;-)
Why?
2:50 Nice and slow?
...adjusts RUclips playback speed to 25%
That style of shoe looks very comfortable. Which are they?
They are indeed very comfortable once the break in. They are Golden Goose
@@mikeslessons Golden Goose, huh? Definitely going to look into them. Hope they look cool on me as well. Awesome video by the way.👏👍
I think I bajujadobangbanged when I should have been bajujabaddabadding. Will keep at it though. 👊🏼

Do you know Matt Chamberlain by chance?
How in the world
