I bowled in the same league with Don Santiago. We faced each other about 10 times. I beat him once with a 133 against his 128. After that, wasn't even close.
The comment I made, stating that candle pin bowling looks simple, is sarcasm. 🙂 That’s why I put the weird grinning at the end. I guess no one picked up on that…
I grew up with Din Gillis, Bob Foreaker and later with Lutsk and Morin on WNDS, bowled in league and still do it for fun. Sadly a lot of lanes are closed these days.
I was once at a duck pin lane and got screamed at when I did not clear the fallen duck pins in the lane between balls. Thought that's how it was supposed to be played after watching this channel.
I've thrown a few balls down a few alleys. Even worked at one for awhile in college. I was better at pool. The owner was pro caliber. Al Boisvert. A lefty, I think as I recall, but one of those early full backswing guys with incredible speed. Al's ball was smooth yet when he made contact he got action.
That was almost definitely not a lob. Who knows what happens afterwards if it wasn't called. But credit to Santiago for bowling very well and I thought he had it locked up with that lead. Heck of an ending.
I wish that the Angelotti family didn't sold off Pilgrim Lanes, as it took away a rich part of Bowling's history. The Massachusetts Government should have designated it as a Heritage Property, which would have banned developers from demolishing it. If Calgary can designate the Hart House at Patterson Heights a heritage property, why couldn't Massachusetts do the same with Pilgrim Lanes?
Ralph was known for calling lobs that weren't lobs. I think the other bowlers were pissed when Ralph didn't call a lob on Don Santiago on his 2nd ball in the 10th frame against Paul Berger.
I watched the third frame of the Rinaud vs Santiago match, and Rinaud didn't lob the ball. Too bad Lob/Foul line judges don't use the whistle when a Bowler commits a Lob or Foul like they do in Canada.

at least you got one.
Man I love watching these! Thanks again Wolfman!
Its weird watching the show 30 some years later… Thanks Wolfman
51 years old and just now realizing this sport exists! Pretty cool! I’d like to give it a try - looks simple...😉
Looks simple but dang hard for an amateur to average 100.
Ouch!! Looks are deceiving. Quite a difficult game to get good at. Lots of fun tho. And maddening at times.
Its the only form of bowling ive ever known!!!
Candlepin is hardly easy believe me. Us guys who do it for fun are happy to put up games of 100.

These are so awesome, who knew that Steve Buscemi was a candlepin bowling commentator?

I never expected to have these 2 guys in the finals. But they both deserved it and great clutch bowling in the end by Putney.
Definitely. I remember reading an old article from John Vallante of the Boston Globe, and he was predicting for Renaud to win.

@@anandguruji83 Who Don Gillis - Tommy M
Getting rid of Pilgrim Lanes along with its rich heritage is the worst thing the owners, the Angelotti Family, ever did.
three of the five bowlers here rolled a triple strike in 1989-1990 season
Thanks, Wolfman!
Apparently the most important piece of equipment here.... the towel.
What a finish... wow
Happy 100th Birthday to the late Don Gillis.
This episode aired on 25 August 1990.

1000 dollars for a triple. Putney got 10,000 for that double. Unbelievably clutch
And $1000 for each strike after a triple.
I'm surprised that Tom Olzsta didn't make the Tournament of Champions that year.
2 of 5 bowlers that were in past championship shows faced Dick O'Connell and lost to him.
Steve Renaud Sr... With hair!

Too bad Stevie didn't actually lob when he was called for it. Cost him money. He skipped that ball.

Tommy M: Who Don Gillis?
Why am I watching this?
Santiago should be working at the snack bar instead of bowling
....and you could do better? The guy qualified for a TV show, rolled a 425 triple to get on the championship show, and made it to the finals. Shut up!
The announcers won't even say "gutter ball"
Just to geht stahted heah.
