1988 True Value Candlepin Bowling Championship - Full Telecast

- Опубликовано: 28 ноя 2024
- Original air date: 8/27/1988. The 1988 Candlepin Bowling Championship show was the first one to be broadcasted from the Pilgrim Lanes in Haverhill. It was also one of the best Championship shows as well in the entire history of the show itself, due to a HUGE crowd, pins flying EVERYWHERE, lots of bonus money, clutch performances, and of course, some of the most SHOCKING moments you will ever see during certain matches.
The top five bowlers from this show were: Dick O'Connell, Gary Carrington, Joe Ashline, Tom Olszta, and Dan Myrick.
Enjoy and R.I.P. Don Gillis and Pilgrim Lanes.
Thanks to Tom Olszta himself, here is a higher quality version of this show that also includes the commercials if anyone would like to see it here: ruclips.net/video/Zj1LWjC4u8Y/видео.html ^_^
i have absolutely no idea how i got here, but the fact that this is uploaded to youtube in the first place is just great
Seems a whole bunch of people had this show up in their feeds for who knows what reason recently. I am absolutely not complaining. This is the sort of stuff that makes youtube awesome.
@LordGoomba With me being Born in 96, i never even had a chance haha!
I’ve been grinding two a night for a couple weeks. Why? I have no idea. 🤷♂️
It's time to stop scrolling if I made it here
@goomba1982 I've seen that 1988 national aerobics championship. I was alive back then and old enough to remember stuff like that. Funny enough growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, one thing I didn't get to see growing up was candlepin bowling.
The algorithm brings us together again!
- Yes, candlepin is going strong (though we miss Pilgrim Lanes), and we livestream matches on our channel. We don't have all the workings of television, but we aim above all to feature as many bowlers, leagues, and venues as possible. Other great channels/shows: Wolfman (obviously), Alley Chat, King of the Palace, New England Candlepins, Candlepin Bowling Channel.
- Rule 1: three balls: you still get a strike in one and a spare in two, but getting ten on the third ball is as important as a free throw. On one match in this video alone, that proves critical. Marks are tough to get, and everyone in this audience doubtless knows that! That's why everyone's so hype.
- Rule 2: the pins stay put unless it jumps a foot in front of the plate, and as long as you don't throw a gutterball, you can use it on the next shot.
- Oh, you think this game's easy just because the ball's smaller? Come and try it here in the Northeast (incl. Canada). Sure, a kid can roll the ball, but against those tiny toothpicks, it takes balance, power, and accuracy to score highly!

No idea how I got here but the vibes are high and the commentator is absolutely electric
These commentators are better than most NFL commentators.
I can't believe I'm watching this on youtube. I'm from Concord NH and Boutwell"s bowling alley. Gosh this reminds me of candlepins for cash out of boyleston bowl a drome. I was a world champion in 1967 at the big 20 in Scarborough Maine. It's great to see some of the terrific competitors from days ago. Thank you Wolfman12395 for finding these.
We were in Concord today at the planetarium. Came up from Kittery. I remember candlepin used to air after Saturday morning cartoons.
@@RoastMcGhost Wow, I would ride my bike around the NHIT, when it was being built. My sister used to work at the planetarium. I have spent alot of money at the Kittery Trading Post and surrounding malls. Yes, I think it was called candlepins for cash every saturday at noon. 😃
Most amazing thing in this vid, nobody looking at their phone or holding phones up to take video. Somehow they still seemed to enjoy the event.
Tom beat me on the last show of the year to make the telecast. We were tied halfway through. The third string didn't go so well for me and went very well for Tom.
Great bowling they seem to not need the deadwood the pins seem to jump over them
I am a fan of duckpin but enjoy watching the ten and candle
Adeline what we call CHOKED
I eat hotdogs to this
This was the same year Arthur 2 On The Rocks starring Dudley Moore. I was in the crowd . Red and white striped shirt, half chub . Mini bone when Carrington looked at me
Brings back a lot of memories of growing up in New England
Don Gillis was a true professional
So was your mom.. at shucking corn with her mouth!
No idea how I started watching this but I kept on till the end.
I watched these well before 1988. Candlepin is a New England thing.
Honestly I have no idea how I got here and at first put it on to see what candlepin was and can't believe I'm still watching this,it is amusing and different but can't believe I haven't ever seen/heard of this before
This used to come on after Saturday morning cartoons in the Boston area.
Happy Birthday to Don Gillis, who would've been 99 today.
I see Mike jotting down things on a small scratch pad or something, probably taking scores and small notes that we might get to read in his book!
Tom is all bummed out bowling a 93. That would be a masterpiece by me lol.
You should have kept the commercials in
Finally they have released this rare footage!
I dont even watch sports but this was recommended and i watched it all while the superbowl was on😅
This hit the algorithm somehow seems like I'm not the only one who decided to watch some bowling haha
Did you all just randomly end up here like me? At 11pm when you have work in the morning? No ? Just me?
WOW. Throwing the ball that hard and accurately is insane. These guys are legitimate athletes.
Lol
I'm 54 years old and I never heard of Candlepin Bowling. lol
Checkout Duckpin Bowling too. Whenever I need inspiration
not to take life seriously, I watch Bowling. It chills me out...
What a fucking electric treat of a video
I haven’t a clue how I got here. I watched the whole thing.
I’ve got no idea what or why l’m watching this, but l kinda dig it.
Myrick’s magnificent mullet 😎👍
I have no idea how I ended up here but hey, let’s watch some bowling! BTW, my uncle that just passed away a few days ago once bowled a perfect 300! He would average 260/game. RIP uncle Gene!
How the fuck did I get here and why did I watch it all? I need to rethink my life decisions.
If this had commercials it would be even better
I remember watching this on tv. Dan was a fellow school student of mine.
I don't know why this is in my recommended videos. But here I am.
The RUclips overlords demonstrate their prowess once again. In between Tim Dillon and Dr Disrespect recommendations, this beauty is presented to me, and I've been sitting here for, what... Thirty minutes? Taken to a place I never knew existed. Yet now realize, a place I have always wanted to be.
THEY KNOW WHO WE ARE.
Why am I watching this at midnight trying to go to bed…
This is bowling in another dimension
I’d expect to see candlepin bowling in the back room of a video arcade in which all games are those flip the quarters into the metal truck style. Right next to them would be the pinball machines with one flipper broken. Also, Macho Man Savage shirt classes up the place in front row right next to his two buddies Rainbow shirt Randy and broke a$$ Hunter S Thompson in the indoor, no light will ever hit my eyes sunglasses.
Seeing this sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole… apparently no one has ever bowled a 300 in candlepin, and the only places to try in the US are in Massachusetts, Maine, or New Hampshire.
RIP Don Gillis, Dick O'Connell and Pilgrim Lanes.
Dick O'Connell? When did this happen?
@burnlastsunday Few years back. Google Dick O'Connell obituary Abington should come right up
What a choke by Ashline
Dude has some serious power in those throws
The ball weighs two lbs, how much power does it take
Gotta love the guy that keeps yelling "Easy spare" as Gary's ready to throw the ball. Probably someone from Canada that was jealous of all his title wins up there.
Dan Myrick is the King of Cool.
I know how these bowlers feel..I've gone my whole life with Small Balls....
The people sitting directly behind these guys' backswing are braver than I am. Imagine the bowler losing grip and seeing that rock coming right for your head.
One of the only reason I miss living in Mass. Hanson Bowladrome and the old place that was in downtown Whitman were my haunts. Dad sitting at the desk smoking Winston Lights writing handwritten scores while my fat ass ate Funyuns and ran to the arcade every so often. Good times
I wpuld have loved playing this if I ever knew a place that had it. Never heard of this candlepin bowling
Dan Myrick was definitely juicing.
R.I.P DON GILLIS AND PILGRIM LANES
R.I.P DON GILLIS AND PILGRIM LANES
everytime? every post? hmmm
A lot of candlepin lanes have closed over the last 20+ years and it's too bad that we can't get the kids into the game. Bowling in all forms has declined over the last several years due to people not having extra money to do it.
I bet anandguruji83 and Weldon are the same person...
@@weldonmackenzie1963 just be glad he didn't reply to himself with the same exact comment like he usually does lol.
Idk why and how this ended up on my page tonight. But I’m home from the bars and about to watch the fuck out of this right now
I love watching these old series'.. brings me back to being a kid and watching. It is a bit odd to think of the age of these guys now.. 60-80s... Where are they now?
Olstza's reaction at 27:11... hahaha
He was the G.O.A.T
Not sure why I'm watching this but it made me think back to the good old 90s, growing up and watching The Next Generation on TV. And what do you know!? A damn star trek TNG commercial pops up! Ima go watch some star trek now ✌🖖
The crowds in these videos always amaze. It's a dying sport now such a shame
I love any sport you can play drunk wearing jeans.
I love ESPN Ocho-tier sports like this. So strange and niche and interesting
It's 2am and this was recommended for me to watch. Why? Why not I guess.
This looks fun
perhaps the last time the manual scoreboard was shown on a telecast.
Looks like a young spring chicken Mike Morin in the front row chatting it up with Olstza!
Bowled on Mike's team once in Acton, had a 108 average, no stiff.
Where is the guy with the gray beard and black rimmed glasses? This must be the first video I've seen he isn't in.
Ikr who was he? He never showed any emotions and just sat there
@@michaelsegur6810 I don't know who he is, I'm sure he is a huge supporter of the sport but his demeanor always seemed to be like he would rather be anywhere else.
i know it smells crazy in there
That boy Carrington sweating all over crouch sweat and ass sweat 😂😂
Note the guy in the front row (to the bowlers right) wearing the macho man Randy savage T-shirt 😀
That guy was himself a legend (in his own mind supposedly) Reggie Deline!
@@kylebertulli4435 Reggie Deline? Or Reggie Decline?
The crowd must be exhausted from clapping for over and hour straight
watching this tonight
Wish we have had this game on Long Island. Would like to throw a ten pin ball at them. My first game was candles at Downtown Lanes in Springfield Mass!🙂
I’m in Nassau county. I used to bowl at Wantagh and Massapequa Bowl
Roy from the office has a secret talent.
Don't think I've ever seen a solid white set of candlepin balls before
Never heard of this sport till February 12th 2023
Geez, I was a 1 yr old in 88’
I can't believe I just watched the whole thing...
That 2nd quarter-final tho🫨
You get a little variation with candlesticks. With bowling it's like explosion every time
And here I am. RUclips knows I've never seen candlepin bowling, so why not show the guy
Great matches. Carrington is literally sweating his balls off.
Disagree. I think they really could have played a lot better.
he looked like he pissed himself lol
Carrington was the king of sweat.
Was this originally broadcast on ESPN 8 The Ocho?
Commentators:
Don Gillis & Brian Leary
19:45 joe ashline had great technique
Since you don't actually put your fingers in the bowling ball is there any reason to own your own candlepin bowling ball or is it just as good to use a houseball?
for some reason this was recommended for me. i knew the comments would be people similar hahahahha. TV was something else back then lol.
What the heck happened to Olszta in the semi final. Was he trying to blow that match on purpose? To deliver that that far to the left and be that far off for him is unusual. I wonder if he either hurt himself, or if he had trouble holding the ball due to all the juice.
Is this still a thing? I've never heard of this before
It’s a New England thing
Wow talk about a big audience i think full house comes to mind lol.
2 things
The pin action is so crazy and the weight distribution is so different than normal pins so that you could almost hit any pocket on your first roll and hit a strike somehow
Why don't they clear the downed pins?
It's one of the things about candlepin bowling that makes it more challenging than ten pin.
I never knew this existed. Just learned some lawn bowling from Argentina existed. And a bunch of strange sports from Asia. RUclips is da thing
in the final match doesnt it look like carrington pissed himself lmao
With all those people in there, I bet AC was pretty ineffective. Some of those places didn't have AC at all. So I'm sure the bowlers were sweating bullets.
Thats because, as Big Ern McCracken would say:
"He's got one foot in the frying pan and one in the pressure cooker. Believe me, as a bowler, I know that right about now, your bladder feels like an overstuffed vacuum cleaner bag and your butt is kinda like an about-to-explode bratwurst."
im a bowler as well my father was on this show and my brother was on channel 50 and on the 30k challenge show my only time trying out for tv i missed out by 3 pins me and bobby whit were tied with 500 after 4 strings i threw a 163 my last game lol bobby threw a 166
@@frontdesk6225 can you imagine if Hallberg made a live show? He'd be so nervous he'd probably be pounding the ball into the lane so hard it would hop three lanes over and knock Ralph out of his chair. I heard he used to stand by the deadwood line if he was having a bad night bowling and make his deliveries there. After John Potorski smashed the ceiling at Fairway, I heard Hallberg and Potorski became a candlepin tag team--The Natural Disasters!
Incredible athletes
What you want is to grow the beer belly. It centres out your balance and lets you bobble ergonomically for the optimal bowl.
Everybody went BEASTMODE
Imma joker, I’m a smoker, I’m a candlepin choker.
Carrington got sweating balls! Lol
26:45 may be the worst choke in sports history that no one knows or cares about.
If someone was going to choke, it was that guy. Look at how jittery he is. I think the choker was hitting that sweet Colombian sugar in the bathroom during the commercial breaks.
greatest of athletes right here
i feel like fast pitch softball pitchers would crush this game
Is it just me, or did Olszta seem to rush a bit in the semifinal string?
Guy in the crowd with the light blue shirt and dark tinted glasses looks like Steve Buscemi from Fargo
I’m wondering if Brian Leary is mad that Greg Kinnear stole his schtick.
Wow what a choke job by Joe
I bet he's still having nightmares about that last box.
I bowled on the same league as Joe for 4-5 seasons in the 90’s. He was the best bowler, but also a train wreck in pressure situations.
Also watch his match against Hawk Halas when he was up by 61 pins at one point in the last game for total pinfall...lost by 2...by far some of the biggest butt clenching I ever saw
@@jix3324 He looks very high strung, and jittery. Was Joe know for powdering his nose in the bathroom between frames?
Ahh, the good ol' mullet.
I’ve watched videos on how they keep score. It’s obviously different but the way they display it is very confusing.
Yeah this is how candlepin is scored. Vertically, not horizontally.
Oh weed, what the heck am I watching? 😆😆😆😆
Acknowledge the guy in the front row wearing a Macho Man shirt
