Bro, you're not alone in your first impression. Everyone who heard it for the first time were absolutely spellbound by the music but completely bewildered by the subject matter. That's just who is Tool is. You practically have to consult a scientific and/or medical encyclopedia just to be able to halfway piece together what they're talking about on their albums.
The 46 & 2 refers to an upcoming evolution in humanity based on the human chromosome makeup. Primitive humans (cavemen) had a 42 & 2 chromosome makeup. For the past 200,000+ years humanity has had a 44 & 2 makeup. 44 & 2 is what we have today. A 46 & 2 chromosome structure would signifie that a leap in human evolution has been made, and a higher consciousness has been achieved.

Some of the ideas behind this song are based on the teachings of Drunvalo Melchizadek. Here's a snip of an interview with him (Leading Edge, 12/95):
"There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything."
Rachel Wells (eileen@loop.com) has written this moderately long, excellent summary of all the relevant Jungian concepts:
    "Anima / Animus (pronounced On-ee-mah):
In Jungian psychology, the anima refers to personality traits regarded as feminine that are often repressed into the unconscious of males while the animus refers to traits regarded as masculine that are often repressed into the unconsciousness of females.
Although suppressed from conscious awareness, the anima/animus influences our behavior in powerful ways. In most individuals,it is projected onto people of the opposite sex and accounts for the experience of falling in love with someone we hardly know. As the unconscious pole of the self, the counter-ego represented by the anima/animus can also be a guide to one's own unconscious realm. It is often experienced as the guiding female (if you're male) or male (if you're female) presence in dreams.
    The Shadow:
In Carl Jung's personality theory, the ego represents the individual's sense of personal self. The sense of personal identity is purchased, however, at the expense of certain tendencies that are rejected as 'not-self'. According to Jung, these rejected traits come together as a kind of unconscious 'counter-ego' which he termed the shadow.
We may become unduly anxious or irritated when in an environment or around a person that in some way reminds us of repressed aspects of our self. If a person has rejected his or her own sex drive, for example, that person may feel irrational fear or anger around an overtly sexual individual. The shadow may appear as a person in one's dreams, usually as an individual of the same sex.
Of all the archetypes, the shadow is the most powerful and potentially the most dangerous. It represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise.
    The meaning of 46 + 2:
According to Melchezedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids'. These grids extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns (see 'Sacred Geometry'). Each species has its own grid, which supports life, and connects the consciousness of its particular species. Before any species can come into existance or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissoves.
A new grid was completed in 1989 - the 'christ-consciousness' grid. This grid will allow humans to evolve into our next version. We'll develop two additional chromosomes (which are really 'geometrical images' designed to resonate with our specific grid) for a total or 46 + 2.
The main change will be a shift to the "unity consciousness". Every cell in your body has its own consciousness and memory. You, the higher being that occupies your body, make the millions of different consciousnesses in your body work together as one being. How does this relate to this grid? Think of yourself as a cell and the grid as the higher being. We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity."

I can see why. A huge part of hip hop is the lyrics and Tool is a very, very intelligent band when it comes to lyrics (not to mention musically as well).
The other big part of hip hop is the beat: from my understanding the rhythm and time measurements really. Tool are masters at creating interesting and complicated rhythms in complicated time measures. Most Tool songs are not in the standard 4 beats per measure and Tool switches up their time measures multiple times in their songs.

      @kevinkibble8342 6 лет назад +2

Heisenberg I listen to a lot of classic Hip Hop and while the production is complex and intricate, the actual music theory of the songs is not. It's mostly just samples of old funk/soul songs from the 60s and 70s in 4/4.

However now I am sober and waking they have surpassed all others through the understanding of all that is spoken about in their lyrics and magnetic vibration. Most people have not read the Bible but I’m very thankful Maynard has and has found true meaning encoded within himself and bible while teaching it through beautiful music. Tool was a huge part of my life and will always have a special place in my soul. They are a band that never ever leave you. Even though I grew to love other musical tastes.. I always come back to them. They were truly a one of a kind piece of art and I have yet to hear anything that comes close to the feelings and sensations I experience when I listen to them. And the more I try to understand them, the more they mystify and baffle me with the sheer talent, passion, and lyrical complexity that is unparalleled.

All the members of tool are extremely talented. Maynard's trippy and thought provoking lyrics couples beautifully with Danny's insane drum beats. Adam Jones the guitarist has been rated in the top 100 guitarists of all time by rolling stone and he does their artwork and directs most of the music videos. Paul D'Amour was the bassist but left the band during this album, he said this, "Their creative process is excruciating and tedious, and I guess I never felt the desire to play a riff 500 times before I can confirm that it’s good; that’s why it takes them eight years to write an album."

The Shadow is where you stuff all your repressed memories, and all the emotion you push down inside. When people "project" their issues, its known as shadow projection. They are actually projecting their own shortcommings onto you.
In order to become a complete human being, we must deal with our shadow.
we can do this an a few ways
    we can deny it
    we can project it
    we can understanding it
or the ultimate way, we can join with our shadow and become somthing new.
46+2 is reference to chromosonal count. we are currently are 44, we will never evolve untill we as a human race. Learn to deal with our shadow

  • @renegade4dio
    @renegade4dio 6 лет назад +18

46 & 2 is about chromosomes. 46 is the number of chromosomes in a human. The 2 is the theoretical extra pair some higher level next evolution of human might have. You aren't going to understand the lyrics without knowing outside stuff. You'd have to study Carl Jung. "The Shadow" is one of his concepts, sort of like Freud's "Id". Where he talks about "Digging through my Shadow", he's talking about digging through his own animal mind, that darker, less rationally thinking, more evil part of us.
But seriously, don't take my (or anyone else's) word for it. Tool intentionally never explains their songs, and leaves it to the fans to hash out what they mean.

Ssup! Well it’s true that Keenan is singing about changes in his own self but these changes are not meant to be mentally. Yes heMs had a rough past and yes he wants to leave it behind him but in this song „46 & 2“ he‘s singing ablut a physical change of his body. The human body is based on 44 & 2 chromosomes. If we could reach a stable state of living with 46 & 2 chromosomes and with that become a higher being. We could see and experience things whole differently.
That’s what the song actually is about.

Long story short: everybody has a "Shadow" personality. Your dark side. The opposite of the face you wear in public. Clinical psychology holds that to be a truly whole person, in good mental health, you must acknowledge this part of yourself. Accept it's existence. The title of the song relates this process to evolution. Human beings have 46 chromosomes, organized as a set of 44, and a set of 2. Before that, we had 44. 42, and 2. So our next stage of evolution will be 48 chromosomes. 46, and 2.
It's easy to get lost in the weeds on Tool songs though. Some are deep like this. Others, he's just talking about his dick. ...They're from LA...

  • @motorcitymaniac167

The major underlying principles here relate to chromosomes and Jungian theory.
Before any species can come into existence or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissolves.
We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity

A lot of you are briefly touching on introductory concepts relating to the song, there's a theory within the metaphysical community of achieving elevated levels of consciousness, the song, like so many other of Tool's offerings is about humanity reaching it's full potential-Forty-six&2, Forty-eight&2, Fifty&2. This is very similar to the concept of self-actualization inasmuch that very few people actually achieve this, but it sets the bar.

As stated before me this absolutely is about chromosomes. In reality man did not evolve by adding more chromosomes. Also, having more chromosomes does not mean a species is more advance (many have more than humans). However, Tool does not always operate in the realm of reality (and I like it that way). The song is science fiction not science. In the song he is speaking not as himself but as mankind. The difficulties and the changes he is describing refer to the evolutions man has gone through getting to 46 chromosomes. And he says “and 2 just ahead of me” implying that it is time for the next evolutionary step. It paints a dramatic and beautiful picture which in my opinion is very artistic and enjoyable. Which is of course the point of the song.

Anima is described in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology. I'm sure I'm not the first to say it.

You see music like this is very layered, between the feeling that comes from the building and rising of the instruments, combined with lyrics that read like poetry. It isn't meant to be one note, or to be taken as one single explanation of Maynard's message. He obviously wrote it from his own journey and experience, but for the listener it can become vast and carry its own meaning very personally. Don't try so hard to pick it apart, but rather keep an open mind and just listen, WITHOUT PAUSE! And each time you hear it again it will grow and offer more surprises. This is what makes Tool exceptional and timeless. Maynard's lyrics have always been genius even with his other bands, A Perfect Circle and Pucsifer are equally as good. Check them out sometime!

There’s a theory that since have 42 chromosomes, if we were to add 2, we would be god like beings.... he’s talking about becoming more than human he has been.

I was hoping for more of an acknowledgment of how catchy the hook was and how incredible the drummer is. This has got to be one of the most perfect and tasteful drum solos ever.
But the fact they you recognized that the lyrics were talking about “next level shit” is actually pretty cool because you are onto something there. I’ve listened to this song for years and just found out was 46 and 2 meant. So I like your intuition. It’s more than just a song about a life change, it’s about human evolution and transformation into a more powerful entity. Good stuff man.

In some cases age is meaningless. Age and time are just mental constructs to help us measure. This song is timeless, every chord every rift.

The focus of the song being the shadow is about the works of the psychologist/philosopher Carl Jung and the shadow self being the inversion of the ego (the darker impulses of the pure self) and how to raise it to the level of incorporated self realization (listen to Jordan Peterson). The title '46 and 2' is about the number of chromosomes in a human with us currently having 44 universal chromosomes and 2 sex chromosomes (female XX and male XY) where as in the past when we were a less individualistic pack animal and an anticipation that we return to a sense of unity and individual enlightenment in tow to arrive at 46 and 2 when we understand our shadow self and free it from the underworld of "sin" and condemnation where tribalism is no longer a weapon against actualization.

Tool is a hard band to figure out when you get into their later albums in later years it’s hard to figure out what Tools songs are about. I never really paid attention to what 46 and 2 is about it’s a good song I listened to it hundreds of times since I’ve been in Alaska. On a side note its awesome to see an African American do a review on this song it makes me happy to see black people listen to different types of music other then just listening to Hip Hop/Rap. Good job on deciphering the song you did an excellent job keep up the good work.

Fun fact: Tool doesn’t have music on streaming services because their albums are meant to be listened to in whole because each song is connected to the previous and next and together they complete the thoughts and feelings that they want you to experience.

Late to the party here, buuuuuut....... Glad you discovered this band my man. Mind blown is a perfect way to summarize most of what Tool does. They definitely walk on their own path in this world. All the musicians are all next next next level. Masterful. The singer is incredible. He can do basically anything with his voice. And his lyrics have him in a category all by himself. I hope that you have continued to tell listen to this band. They are truly truly amazing. I also hope you had researched and found out what 46 and 2 is all about.

I'm sure someone has said it already but 46 and 2 is a theory put forth by Carl Jung, if I'm not mistaken. It basically states that throughout man kinds evolution there are different and distinct states of existence along the way. He figures that the those before us had 22 chromosomes, we have 23, and the next form of human evolution has 24. They come in pairs of 2 meaning we have 23 pairs for a total of 46 distinct pieces of information and the 2 is representative of the next phase.
