@@PatPosseMaybe he should. Also, maybe they'd benefit from a guitarist who's into it and who composes solos rather than improvises them. But, lineup change at this stage, after 40 years together? Getting along is a big part of it. Also, lars and kirk are big parts of the formula, i think they'd lose that if they got an objectively more technically skilled drummer or guitarist. Whenever advanced shredders or drummer makes an "improved" metallica cover it sounds generic to me.

As a fan of forty years, the three new songs sound just like a continuation of hardwired. With one exception: I'm finding myself liking parts of the tunes not the wholes. In some cases most, in other just a few. But based on those three listens, I dramatically lowered my expectations for the new album, tho I appreciate the fact that there are many who love them

    • @PatPosse

You’ve got a point there my friend! There’s some cool parts on each song but they get drowned in the riff salad that makes out the whole song… I was hoping this albums would be like Hardwired (or better) but that ship has sailed.. I hope I’m wrong though!

The singles sound like filler. They are way too long, and need editing. Also they sound uninspired. And, they so badly need a real producer to challenge them and guide them. Greg is not that guy.

    • @phadrus

@@PatPosse that is a concern for me too, albums this long usually have filler. If I get 6-8 songs that for me aren’t filler I’ll cut out the rest and be happy. The problem is with hardwired the singles were some of the best songs, and then there were a few filler tracks. So far for me all the singles here have been filler tracks. So I’m hoping the best is yet to come, but my gut tells me 5his will be the first metallica album I truly am not going to enjoy.

Yes, it's very bizarre how Kirk didn't have any of his riffs backed up when he lost his phone. And why is it he's the only musician I've heard this happen to? He should be recording his riffs on a personal computer as soon as he finishes them.

@@PatPosse Why are you so apologetic about your oppinion?
To me its obviously wrong (your opinion) and let's not forget something. You are a nobody next to Kirk Hammett and sir Elton John actually has nothing else matters as one of the best songs ever. And it is, it just happened that James wrote it. The only thing you can draw from the negativity is more views to your channel.
Taking that out of the picture I would hate having this song shortened because I liked it just the way it is. I wanted a long song and they delivered. You can criticize it like ajfa if that is the case for you but hey music is subjective and it is not for anyone.
As far as Kirk Hammett goes, he actually went through some very personal stuff for hardwired and then what did you expect? Publicly announce it? Hetfield himself said that if and when he was ready he would speak. No reason at all to participate more in the album and for a metallica fan (let's face it, you are not. And I have all the albums and more bootlegs even from the VHS era than you, comes with the age) you forget that it was pretty much the case for Hammett for most of the older stuff. Some solos, some riffs and not even tracking most of the time.
What metallica are doing is pretty much what they always did. They play what they like. Whoever musician you may ask I think they could say in common that, this is the ultimate success for an artist. And that to draw people to you you have to be honest. Let's be honest. You don't know them personally and you will never understand what their faces tell you. Because of profession I can tell you that they have health and mental issues and that goes for their bodies along with their personalities. This is to them, is much more important than adding triplets over chord progressions while shortening a song to satisfy any standard fan. You want them trapped and judged by how you feel a perfect song might be but, it is something you probably never wrote in your life and secondly it wouldn't be them.
My respect for them is that they had the balls to put out music through the rough times, not the great times they had. You don't think they don't know how to add a dual lead part and be more straight to the point? They did fan service all over death magnetic doing this!
For me, to be like iron maiden or ac dc would be my can't stand them anymore, I wouldn't want deteriorating mop rtl etc clones through the years.
This song for others may be overextended and boring or a masterpiece or anything in between but it is exactly this polarizing views that give it value.
Because, to satisfy the normal boring person is to take out elements that deviate more than 85% statistical distribution over bells shape. In other words, you want to apply to more people you have to only leave the liked by all few forms. That is why pop music is what it is and progressive metal will never reach similar staturs. You can play 300 chords for 3 musicians on the crowd or play 3 chords for 30000 people in a stadium. Is it wrong for any of that? Of course not.
Their biggest success is having new fans, having old fans leaving them when they are more narrow minded or just de-tached over age or even having fathers taking their kids or grandkids to see metallica. Which it happens. Nostalgia plays a part and all these "sounds like whiplash, sounds like spit out the bone, sounds like the intro of suicide and redemption, sounds like the solo of RTL" is a card they play very unapolegitacally and very well. And that is a lot of people like them even today. It's not bad to be anything when you are true to yourself.
I hope they never put out a song that is filtered especially through your standards, which for me would probably be very different to what I like to hear, as what I hear from them till now is pretty good for their age and state of being.
Please don't even go to see them live man, you are probably not somebody that should be there. After two to three years of long covid etc negativity should be exiled from our lives, I'd even consider stop making these type of videos if I were you. That is why you get the most dislikes. Or is it what you need to make money from youtube? Any pubilicity is good publicity. Just...stop.

Really good take man. Especially in the context of Hardwired. Singles from that album were not my favorite songs from the record but I liked them and never skipped while listening. Can’t say the same about 72 unfortunately. Lux is the only cohesive track so far, all others have interesting parts but they should have trimmed like a third of each to make them polished. And the solos, well the Hardwired solos were not special but at least they didn’t ruin the songs, but on the new tracks it’s like Kirk didn’t even try to compose them, just noodled

DUDE Thank you soooo so much for speaking out what was on my mind for the longest time. I got similar stuff happening. Every time, when i write a comment on Lars, I point out a problem with Lars and the stans just bomb under my comment with the dumbest and most illogical responses possible, and no matter how logical I explain it, no matter how much proof and links I provide when they don't, they just can not leave their own reality, they probably do not even watch the proof and links i give them, they still say that I hate Lars and that I am wrong which is not even true . The real reality is different than someones own reality and perception. I as a drummer know what the fuck I am talking about, of course there is some stuff about Lars that I like and don't like, but facts are facts, these stans have a hard time comprehending the difference between those. In most my criticism on Lars I even mention that I love Lars, I am a fan and very inspired by what he has done and his creativity and contribution back then and really everything, but i am disappointed in what he does currently and for a long time now. Just like Kirk, Lars can be so much better but I lost hope because its just not happening, he wont get his ass to sit down to practice or overthink things he does. Most Metallica fans would call me a ''Lars Hater'' just for saying how it is. I'm literally not hating on the guy but I am pointing out the stuff he does do and does not do, Or I am comparing Lars with young Lars, or with other drummers. And also metallica fans say people are still mad about Lars and the napster thing. That part is true, there are indeed still ''Lars Haters'' for specifically the napster reason, but still they cant see the difference between the people that *hate* Lars because of napster, and the people that want the best out of Lars but are disappointed in his performance and calling it out. They think both of that is the same. Just like you said, they say shit like ''then why has he made it and you didn't'' or ''you are just jealous'' like in these answers you can already see how hurt they are. They cant form logical responses or say how it is. They wont even respond to any points I specifically make, they just instantly write some comment that has nothing to do with anything. I can also talk about so many more situations and so much more specific stuff. The stupid things they do is just enough to write a whole Bible. 🤦‍♂
    Great Video.

Hahaha dude, yes! That’s the problem with “die hard fans” “”. They know better and everyone else is a dumbass, how dare we critique their (our?) idols! The truth is that Metallica can release any steaming pile of dog shit and people will buy it like hot cakes because it’s got a Metallica logo on it. I too am guilty of this. I already know I probably won’t enjoy this album but already plan on buying it. It would be the only album missing on my Metallica collection and it will make for good content (I hope) but objectively speaking, had it been an unknown local band, no one would lend an ear to it. It’s average at best and even guys like us, who are not blinded by the logo, try to like the songs or find redeeming qualities in them. Coming from the same guys that wrote …And Justice for All, it should be way easier.
And that’s the sad part. We know they are capable of composing more intricate harmonies and interesting Melodies… they just don’t.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to write such and elaborate comment.
There are none so blind than those who will not see.

@@PatPosse Yeah, even though I know it will not come close to their old stuff, at least I hope one single song will blow my mind, but that alone is a big wish already (sadly). It's indeed true that its average at best. While I do personally like Screaming Scide (idk if youtube allows me to even write that word 🙄), I only like that song because, there are couple of things they do there that I love. Like open strings while Lars plays a faster pace beat and rides it with a Crash, I really loved that sound. But I also only like it because it comes from Metallica, its the same guys that did AJFA, and the sound on that song is something I really enjoy. BUT fact is that it is truly average, and I would not listen to it if it was the same song but a different band. Also I want to mention that you also spoke out of my mind with the producer thing, they just do not have the balls like Bob Rock did. Another thing I find sad is that so far there wasn't too much creative stuff by Robert, either he doesn't say anything in the first place or they just don't let him. I think he is an amazing bass player and he has some cool abilities that RARELY get to shine with Metallica. It's like Metallica is bringing/holding Robert down for how amazing he is. (random note but thats similar how I feel about Adam lambert, for the Class act that Queen is Adam really brings them down), Metallica has so much potential that they don't use. But at the end I shouldn't care either, thats just the passionate fan side of me but if they don't do it whatever, I do not have to listen to them if i don't want to. Like Robert Trujillo can play Flamenco on an acoustic, has Metallica ever used that anywhere? I adore Queen so much because they literally used every single thing they had, if one had the ability for flamenco they would not even hesitate to try something with that ability. Metallica just never does this/never does this anymore.

      QUEEEEEEENNNNN!!!!
That being said, I agree with you. It seems like this is (and it is) Lars's and James' band and there's no room for anyone else's input since Bob Rock. I think Rob is underutilized and I feel Kirk might actually feel that way about himself too. Maybe that's why he just goes to the studio, records the solos, and is home by dinnertime.

It’s completely weird and foreign to me to take things that seriously that they go into full DEFCON 1 mode over an opinion.
FYI, I’m a guitarist too. Rhythm mostly and James Hetfield was one of my main influences. I agree about Kirk… I think he’s checked out and doesn’t really have a lot to add anymore. I thought he was a great guitarist when I was a kid in the 80s but, there are so many shredders that make him look amateurish these days. I still have respect for the guy, I’m just not going to go along with the lie that he’s the best guitarist ever, like a lot of fanboys like to claim all the time.

Being willing to open your mouth and give your opinion kinda the whole bedrock that metal is built on. Even some of Metallica’s weaker albums have had some gems that I love (Fuel is actually my personal fave song of theirs). I am expecting this album is going to have probably 2-4 songs I just won’t like and will almost never listen to after having heard them, 2-4 songs that I think are okay and can handle hearing, and then 4-6 songs that I actually really love. I have taken some guitar lessons and have a new respect for the amount of work that goes into a song, even a crappy one. I could never argue a person's talent. Only another musician can recognize that. You mentioned that Kirk was the weakest link as of late. He just finished up a solo project recently and he may need a creative break. I still respect the hell outta him. And props for calling people out on their illogical statements. Huevos grande, dude.

That being said, I don’t remember if I said it on the other video (or it might have been a reply to a comment) but I agree that Kirk’s EP was an attempt at a creative outlet. I was hoping that would fire him up and inspire him some more but it seems like it hasn’t. Maybe it was a hint at he not being in a Metallica mindset anymore… we’ll see how it all unfolds. Kirk is definitely a talented guy and I wish he finds it in himself to unleash his full potential again, be it in Metallica or some other project. 🤘🏻

I don't hate Metallica; I'm actually one of their original fans and used to go see them as well as Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies at much smaller venues in the Los Angeles area when they were considered local bands when I was a teenager in the early 80's growing up in Huntington Park California (where Slayer started out). The thing is; I was also one of the fans who felt that they would never be as good after Cliff died and kind of put them on the back burner after that because I/we felt like they were becoming sellouts. Unfortunately I was pretty young and stupid to be so critical back then, but over the years I have expanded my appreciation for music and allowing myself to listen to many bands that I used to make fun of back then. Another thing I've noticed is that their newer music is far easier to figure out and play than the music they wrote during the first 10 years of their career. I mean, in about the last 8 years I've actually been able to easily pickup and play any of the newer songs I've heard from them pretty much instantaneously. Now this could just mean that I have simply progressed a lot after 42 years of playing guitar, or it could be that they just aren't as inspired and motivated in their creativity as they were back in their early days and are now just recycling most of the licks from the last 30 years because they're unable to progress in their creativity and have become too comfortable after 30 years of wealth and success which does have a tendency to soften a person up and make them forget where they originally came from.

    • @PatPosse

Sad to say I would probably lean towards your second guess there… (not that you haven’t progressed in 42!!) but I’m sure it would still take you a while to figure out all of the nuances in master of puppets or and justice for all…
I agree, they got simple and straight forward which is not necessarily a bad thing but yeah… definitely a more commercial approach. What do you think of the song they released today?

His best solo on that album is in my opinion on "Am I Savage?"....I don't like that song really, but that breakdown, crunch and solo are something most memorable on that album for me at least... I have to say I loved Kirk's solo EP "Portals"... But he should've been more invested in Metallica as he is the integral part of the band and their sound...

But none of the things you listed as objective are objective. If someone likes a solo it isn't a bad solo, subjectively. If someone actually enjoys the full 7 minutes of like 3 riffs or whatever the song actually has that's also good song writing, subjectively. We can talk about the objective facts of the song structure, but whether or not those things are good or not isn't objective; though I guess they can be objectively unconventional. Like, it's not conventional for a song to spend the first nearly minute and a half peddling between 2 very simplistic musical ideas rooted in the same chord as If Darkness Had A Son does, and if your only standard for quality is convention than I guess you'd have a point. However, at no point is it ever established here (or anywhere, really) that this was the criteria.
For the record, I did not see your last video (this is the first time youtube put you in my feed, hi.) and most definitely didn't downvote it. I respect your views whatever they may be. My contention isn't personal. It's that faux-objective nonsense gets on my tits. Without an axiomatic criteria of quality for which to measure the objective traits to there are no meaningful claims to objective quality. HOWEVER; even then I'd be hesitant to say that that would constitute objectivity since your axiomatic criteria will differ from someone else's; and if the band isn't trying to fit your specific criteria than it can't be considered an objective failure for not meeting that criteria anyway. Objectively speaking a lime isn't an apple. That doesn't mean limes are bad, unless your criteria for "bad" is "not an apple". That is why I think your claims like "It's way too long" don't necessarily ring truly objective. It's "too long" for what exactly; and why are we using whatever that thing is as the standard of quality? This is never established. "It's a little bit too repetitive" for what exactly, and why is that thing the assumed indicator of objective quality? Again, never established. Also, by whatever those metrics are, would you then also say that purposefully slow styles like drone metal, funeral doom, no-wave, and sleep drone are objectively bad since they bank on slow repetition? Can an entire genre of music be bad simply because it fails to meet an arbitrary metric it never tried to accomplish anyway? Seems absolutely silly to me.

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  Год назад

Hey man! First of all, thanks for respectfully disagreeing and explaining your concerns here. First of all, yes, a lot of this was sort of explained on the previous video, objective in this sense would be within the canons of a well produced, effective metal song, meaning that for example, a song would be too long and repetitive for the genre and what a listener expects. That being said and having read your comment and explanation, I think your point is as valid as mine. The way I see it, Objectively speaking, Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath is a song that's WAY too repetitive. Subjectively speaking, however, the song rules and it's one of the darkest, most awesome, metal songs!. The fact that someone subjectively likes Black Sabbath (or this song) doesn't not take away from the fact that a song is too repetitive. A 7 minute song with 3 main riffs that repeat themselves over and over for most of it is objectively a repetitive song. Of course, art (and thus music) is subjective and we may fall in love with said repetitiveness. This is why we must leave our feelings behind in order to objectively analyze a song. I'll be the first one to tell you I love some songs that are objectively simple and hate some songs that are objectively complex. Hope this clears up what I meant.

I think they are completely drained as a metal band, the only reason for producing this album I can think of is the fact that everyone was waiting for the new record, they write under such pressure, and I respect that they keep going, but this is real sad.
The worst part that they can't separate, I would love to see James in some other setting, he writes great music.
Solo is awful tho, like plain, unseasoned rice. I hope Kirk will retire and give someone who can actually write guitar music a chance to bring new flavor to this stagnant, corporate, and sad husk of a band.
I really was looking forward for hetfield-mustaine collaboration, but things are not looking good, mustaine still writes great material, kinda lame that james still can't step over themself, would be great end to their music journey, they would play together, at last
They have a so much potential to support upcoming metal musicians by features, touring, just by their presence, experience, and connections. They really can bring the metal scene back to mainstream, if they wanted to do so, like motorhead, ozzy, alice cooper, give new bands a shot, but they are delusional and think that they will make another decent album, what a waste.

The solo in If Darkness had a son isn't that bad. It's a bit long and uses the pentatonic scale and is over-drenched in wah, but That's what Kirk has been doing every since Load or arguably, the black album. The riff underneath the solo changes a bunch of times, and the drums and guitar at one point, play a half-time tempo, which is probably why the solo had to be that long. I wasn't too impressed the first couple times listening to the song, but after repeated listens, I can kind of see what he was going for with that solo. It still takes lots of talent to play a solo like that, even if it's not as amazing as the solos on the first five albums.

I blame Bob Rock for the downfall of Metallica. His first record was the Black album and then their catalog goes to crap after that, at least going by the standards they set in the 80's where every album is in someone's top 10 metal album list. Aside from all the crying in their homemade movie, he was the one telling him how great they sounded when everyone in my living room was trashing them about how bad they sounded. Load really wasn't that bad, but its faults lay in the hands of the fans and the band. The band wanted to try something new. Fine. I remember it came out in the summer of '96 when metal was dying. All of a sudden on the radio one day, the DJ says, "New Metallica, 5pm! Tonight! Be here!" We waited all day just to hear "Until it Sleeps." Not a bad song, but we wanted something heavy because there was nothing out there. Pantera had the "Great Southern Trendkill" out at the time, but few radio stations had the balls to play their music. Looking back, the sheer amount of backlash was unfair to the band and overkill, but the band said "Fuck You" to their fans and it was never the same. I remember a year or two later and Re-Load was on the horizon, and everyone was like, "Maybe Re-Load means they'll be heavy again!" Nope, doubled down on their alternative sound and a record that honestly, sucked. I haven't listened to a single record of theirs since. Then the Napster issue a year later, etc. Then the movie with them crying all the time, wiping their eyes with hundred dollar bills. It showed how out of touch they became from everyone. Trujillo's bass audition was killer though. A few years ago, Kirk was talking about his house being on fire and sending his wife into the blazes to get a few guitars. He sent his wife. Wow.
Rant over. *Hands soapbox to the next person*

The new album seems pretty disappointing so far. Hammett is tone deaf at this point and probably suffering arthritis or something. None of the guys were ever "Virtuoso" level, but as a whole, they were serviceable and made some incredible stuff. But it seems like they've checked out. Whether because of weariness or age catching up with them, they just aren't in it anymore it seems.

Sadly, I feel the same way. They were a killer band at one point but they seem to not have that same anger, violence, thirst, hunger… call it what you will, they ain’t got it. They can still put out some good tracks (72 seasons, Atlas, rise, spit out the bone…) but it’s not the same it was.

  • @SRMoore1178
    @SRMoore1178 Год назад

Some of Kirk's solos just drive me crazy. He can be totally awesome to mediocre in the same solo. I'm not at the level of Kirk in my guitar playing (well, not too far off if I tried, I'm more of a melodic Gilmour guy) but I have an ear for what works and what doesn't. He leaves stuff on songs that I definitely wouldn't. I can tell when he plays run of notes that doesn't work in the key they are in. Take "Sad but True" for example, the solo is totally awesome until the band modulates up to the IV chord (or whatever they do, I don't know theory) at which point the solo loses steam and becomes a discordant mess to my ears with Kirk playing in the wrong mode at times. The entire solo should have stayed in the original key. The solo to "Unforgiven" on the other hand rocks all the way through.

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  Год назад

I agree 100% a lot of times he’d do dissonant runs that make no sense just to add some fast runs into it. I wish he would just buckle down and work on the soloes like he did on unforgiven. One of his best for sure!

  • @BongEyedBastard

Ulrich and his fills; rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat, Jesus Christ, that may have worked on Sad But True, but again that was over 30 years ago. He plays the same fill all the time.
