    I mean DnD is basically 6 hours of "you had to be there," which doesn't often translate well into funny.

    • @entr3_nou5
      @entr3_nou5 2 года назад +734

      Probably why a lot of DND official stories and film adaptations don’t work either. They’re just basic fantasy stories with the title slapped on. People think of D&D movies having a bunch of injokes related to tropes they’ve experienced, and unless the director plays the game religiously it’s not gonna work

      isn't the problem way more general than that? social media "humor" in general is 95% people fishing for upboats by repeating the same jokes - in mild variations if they're feeling adventurous, over and over again.

      This applies even more to stories that are at least somewhat funny to hear second-hand. For example, Tiefling character exploited fire-damage immunity to shoot herself out of a cannon, only to fail the "Acrobatics" check to land without bludgeon damage.

      Storytelling! Remember in an age when literacy was rare, and written records didn't last very long or were prohibitively expensive to produce, information would be spread by word of mouth, and in narrative form.

    Funnily enough that sea-dwelling vampires idea is used canonically in Vampire: the Masquerade. There are offshoots of Gangrel and Nosferatu Kindred that live in the ocean since a) they don't breathe, b) they can sustain themselves on schools of fish easily, and c) they can rest in caves or deep enough in the ocean that sunlight doesn't reach. Means easy living too since they rarely if ever come into contact with humans and thus don't need to worry about the Masquerade and keeping themselves hidden :D
    Theoretically any Kindred in VtM could do this, the only ones that can't are the ones with certain bane restrictions. There are Folklore Banes (if I'm remembering the name correctly anyway) where things like religious symbols and running water/currents hurt them and put them into a beastial frenzy, the usual stuff from traditional vampire lore. It's cool.

The term "mage" was also used in reference to arcane casters in general after the introduction of the sorcerer class, and is also applied to users of certain types of magic within the wizard class in 5e (see War Magic subclass - "Followers of this tradition are known as war mages").
      Thief is a subclass of rogue in 5th edition, and was the name used for that class before 2nd edition.
      So both have been actual D&D classes and are still remain relevant terms in 5e. Jacob is incorrect with his assessment on this one.
      What really got me though is that he didn't include "warrior" in his comment about the thief and mage not being D&D classes. Both of those are actually D&D classes but there has never been a "warrior" class. Warrior was the name for a group of classes in 2e which included the fighter, ranger and paladin. The class groups are not actual classes, just a label for a grouping, similar to saying "arcane casters". There was also a "Noble Warrior" kit for the fighter in 2e. Kits were sort of like 5e backgrounds. And there was a "warrior" class in 3e that was like a dumbed down version of the fighter class intended for NPC use only, similar to the warrior sidekick option in 5e. But never any actual classes called "warrior", yet he called out the other two for not being D&D classes, even though they are/were.
