    As a beginner, I got a soft top Gerry Lopez from Costco for $99 and it has a thruster 3 fin system and I believe it’s like 8’6” and I have no complaints, it’s a great board to learn on as a beginner and I’m starting to find my buoyancy with it and have been able to pop up on some nice waves! Highly recommend!

    i progress very quick at sports... im 48 and took up skating at 45, i rip a park and everybody thinks i been skating all my life.... that said its a different sport and i may eat my ego ....so I'm thinking rent a softie for 2 or 3 sessions and then buy an epoxy.... your thoughts.... or should i just calm down and get the softie.... ?

      Loving the enthusiasm Tim! The biggest learning curve in surfing though is certainly learning the ocean and your locals surf spots. Personally I’d rent the foamie and see how you get on after a few sessions, you’ll quickly feel out if you want to jump straight to the hard top board 🤙

    I took a surfing class and feel really motivated to progress, I like the idea of getting a used epoxy board either 6’6” or 7’. I’m 5’7 and about 140lbs, would I be on the right track? Or maybe some other recommendations?

    Hey, can any help finding the right fin for a board
    I'm look at getting a custom made board from a local shop - Rusty . The model and size I'm looking at is a "Moby Fish" Length- 7'4 or 7'5, Width- 22.67" with a Thickness of 3.03" and a Futures quad fin plug setups.
    I'm hoping to find fin in the Perth area and is the Thickness ok as this is going to be my first or second board

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  Год назад

      Stoked to hear you’re getting your first custom Nate! Fin wise for that board I’m not 100% sure so I’d say the best bet would be chatting to the shaper about the best fins for it. In terms of thickness, what’s your height and weight?

    I’m thinking of getting a short board soon, I’m going from a 7’2 hard top with 47L. What size board do you think I should go for? FYI I am 5’0 and about 100 lbs.

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  3 года назад

      Stoked to hear you're dropping down to a shortboard! Given your size and weight you can get away with a pretty short option, with less volume, ideally between the 28-32L range. Don't base it all on volume though as length has a lot of impact on paddle power! Something like the Puddle Jumper HP in 5'9, Black Diamond in 5'11 or even a performance mid-length would fit you well. Let me know what you decide to go with and how you get on!

    • @darthnihilus4074
      @darthnihilus4074 3 года назад

      @@StokedForTravel I’m thinking maybe the modern highline PU in 5’8. It’s got plenty of volume (35L), and apparently it’s designed for your first shortboard, so it’s a little wider. What do you think?

    My goal is to longboard but I’ve heard softboards are more forgiving for beginners (less intimidating and safer) Should I start with a longboard because that’s my goal (and beginners can use them) or should I do a foamie or mini mal instead?

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад

      Good question Nicolette! So the advantages of foamies in the mini mal length are the fact they’re very forgiving, easy to handle and a bit safer as well. Personally I’d say use that as a base to get all the basics nailed, then when you feel confident go longer. That being said you can obviously start longer as well, just be aware it’s a lot of board to handle in the water, especially if you’re just figuring the ocean out 🤙

    I weigh 174 lbs and I’m 5’11 but I want a board I can progress and have a board that I can have for a couple years what do you recommend???

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  3 года назад +1

      So I’d say either a mini mal (as they’re always heaps of fun) or a performance mid length. The mini mal will certainly be an easier option to start with, but the performance mid length (like the cape collective midway) would offer up more progression in terms of performance 🤙

      @StokedForTravel  Год назад +1

      It really depends on your skill level to be honest. It’s not going to be impossible to learn on, but you’re learning curve will be a lot steeper than on a 7-8 foot board!

    which beginner knows what mini mal is? maybe that should have been explained

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  4 месяца назад

      I do run through sizing of mini mals at the beginning, but incase anyone needs a bit more clarification, it’s a board usually in the 7-8 foot range, with a more rounded nose, along with quite a bit of width and thickness. The same outline as the board in the clip 😊🤙
