Open space and rough conditions. 45 minute walk to the closet store which is Mr Bills gas station. Everyone goes to Mr Bills to buy beer and cigars. Nobody buys gas from Mr Bills. Population 22000
I started kindergarten and graduated HS (‘86) in Altus, OK before moving onto the next chapter in my life. I’ve covered just about every inch of that town either by foot, bike or car. To say the closest convenient store is a 45 min walk from that area of town is ridiculous. I could walk across Altus in 45min. It’s small! I do miss it though. Small town life is great.

The only part of Lincoln school that's left is the gym. Although the first student graduated in 1932, the build was finished in 1941. Before the 1968 case of Brown -vs- The Board of Education, Altus led the nation in a peaceful and cooperative integration, closing Lincoln. Cities don't normally preserve old schools as museums. Hell my grade school (Wilson) got turned into a seniors center and my Junior High (Central) into a Kindergarten and now closed In believe. My family goes back to about 1913 in Altus. Still my place for family but sure isn't for me. No money, no living, no jobs. Still have 2 brothers, a sister, and 2 graveyards full of family. Peace to you all....

My family started in Altus around 1913. I was born and raised there from 1960 to 1979. Visited there through the years since. Even moved back there for 3 years. Altus has suffered poverty and blight. People aren't keeping up their homes, the city doesn't keep up the roads, all the while charging an arm and leg for electricity. Love the place. Still have 2 brothers and a sister there but it is going to hell in a hand basket.
