  • Momotarō no Umiwashi (桃太郎の海鷲?, literally Momotarō's Sea Eagles) is an animated Japanese propaganda film produced in 1942 by Geijutsu Eigasha and released March 25, 1943. Directed by Mitsuyo Seo, it featured many of the same animation team that later worked on the sequel, Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (Momotarō Umi no Shinpei,1945), which is credited as being the first Japanese, feature-length, animated film. Planned by the News Division of the Imperial Japanese Navy, endorsed by the Ministry of Education, it was made for children. The film combined animated characters from the famous Japanese folk tale of Momotaro with the story of the then recent attack on Pearl Harbor (1941). A character highly derivitive of Bluto, from the Popeye cartoons, makes an appearance in this film as a drunk demon (U.S.N.) sailor..
    Momotaro, the human leader of an animal navy fleet, embarks on a mission to bomb Pearl Harbor (referred to as Demon Island).

    Man, first Popeye bonks him in the nose and then he gets caught in the Pearl Harbor attack. Poor Bluto just can't catch a break.

    I'm amazed at how the Japanese animators kept Bluto in character from the beer-drinking to even the Gus Wickie voice-over, which either they had somebody perfectly imitate or they bootlegged his voice from the Fleischer cartoons.

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 2 года назад +6

      It didn't take me very long to recognize that they just borrowed clips of dialogue from Popeye cartoons for those "voiceovers". There's a bit of recognizable English, right before it gets shoddily cut off.

    • @jstevinik3261
      @jstevinik3261 2 года назад +8

      @@Asterra2 Come to think of it, that sounds very close to the actual voice audio that I heard from Popeye and the Forty Thieves, so your stance of the audio just being barrowed is more likely the case than an insanely good initiation. However, some say that the pitch was higher (no to me though) and therefore an intimation, but that could be attributed to sub-par audio editing.
      Regardless, the film shows that the Japanese were familiar with Fleischer (though Famous Studios by the time of release) shorts.

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 2 года назад +2

      @@jstevinik3261 Oh certainly. American animation was famously a huge influence with Japanese animators back in the day. I would have reckoned the uncanny countenance of Bluto in this movie said all that need be said about familiarity-you don't reach that level of authenticity without essentially studying the source material. But since you've named a specific movie (and I agree that a feature length film would have been the most likely target for pilfering), and that movie happens to have been on my to-view list anyway, perhaps I will be able to pinpoint the exact clip soon.

    Such beautiful animation!! Especially of the waves/water. Also sooo creepy! Something about the combo of the cuteness, the extremely fluid animation, early-animation style voice acting, FASCISM, and the indoctrination of children through propaganda, is quietly horrifying

      Yes, you're correct Steven Scarlett. In fact, in 1944 Mochinaga and Seo worked together again, on 'Fuku-chan's Submarine,' another propaganda film. Decades later, in his memoirs, Mochinaga expressed his regrets at having worked on these films, as he knew that many youths had volunteered for the flying corps, after having seen 'Momotaro's Sea Eagles' - only to die in combat. It's also interesting to note that Mochinaga is partly responsible for creating the Chinese stop motion animation industry, as in 1947, he worked with the Chinese actress, director and screenwriter, Chen Bo'er on 'The Emporer's Dream,' intended to expose Chiang Kai-Chek as a 'puppet' of American imperialism. Not surprisingly, they used puppets! There's an interesting pdf available online, a transcript of a talk about Mochinaga's life, given by Noriko Mochinaga (his daughter) in 2018 at the Association of Chinese Animation Studies in Hong Kong. Here's the url: acas.ust.hk/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Mochinaga-Noriko-Copy.pdf in case you want to read it.
