- UPDATE (01/08/2020) - The R42s are temporarily back in service now. This is due to the R179 fleet being temporarily removed from service. As the R179s return to service, the R42s will be phased out.
The small remaining portion of the R42 fleet still in service on the J line was finally retired on December 30th, 2019, after over 50 years of service. A good portion of the fleet was removed from service in late December, leaving only 18, and soon after, only ten cars available for service. These ten cars (enough for one 8-car J Line consist and a spare 2 cars) soldiered on for a week or so before finally being retired after the AM rush hour. Here we see some clips of these cars in operation in their very final days of operation.
These cars have the distinction of being one of the few car types to make it to 50 years of age, a testament to excellent maintenance work performed by the MTA and an overhaul by Morrison-Knudsen in the late 1980s.

It’s like saying goodbye to an old friend. They surely will be missed. I still remember seeing them when they were new with their dark blue belly stripe and light blue stripe over the cab window and roof. Don’t forget the large colorful route letters. A really beautiful piece of equipment that served us well for over 50 years. RIP :(

Legends indeed. We lost 2 historic NYC fleet this year. RTS buses and the R42. Hard working trains for 50 years are hard to come by. But at least some will be saved for Transit Musuem/Nostogolia rides.
Say it ain’t so! The Detroit Diesel Series 50 powered buses are gone too? I cannot get enough of that engine note.
I hated them RTS buses when I lived in New York,but I'll damn sure miss the R-42's,they were the first true air conditioned cars the NYCTA had.
well in my opinion though the RTS buses did had there issues I hated there vibrations but I actually like them .that's just my opinion.

First time I rode on this train cars , I was 3 years old when I was at the L line which used to have those slanted cars . Now as 21 year old, this really a goodbye to those cars 😞

I wouldn’t be able to understand how they lasted such a long time, if I were alive the whole time, because 50 years is crazy long if you think about it. It’s just amazing how it’s been half a century. The R42s were really strong and I wish I was ever able to see them in passenger service.

NYC Transit Fanner Boy The entire R32 and R42 Fleet was supposed to be retired by the R160s, but was halted due to structural frame rot issues found on the R44s. The remaining 222 R32 and 50 R42 cars continued to chug along.

JELLY BEAR VALERA I only rode them a few times. Honestly, I never cared for them anyway, and I am happy to see them go. I know a lot of you do not want to see them go, but if the Subway system is to become more reliable, retirement of the cars is something that can’t wait anymore.
They were my favorite cars to ride on ever since I took my first step into that R42 J when I was little. Its sad to these now retired legends go now.

Well that’s it, for the first time ever, the J and Z lines are 100% NTTs now, there are no more OTTs on the J and Z lines anymore. That means it’s possible to make that line CBTC in the future.
Like how the L is. In fact, the L train was the first line to lose all of the r42s, then was the M and finally the J/Z. Here's how it went:
L train(2007)
M train(2018)
J/Z train(2019)
Note: The r42s originally left the M line back in 2008, but I'm not sure if we could count the Myrtle el project because on the other section the M line did use r42s until 2018. And as for the L, people say that 2005 was the last time r42s ran on the L, but I think there were still a few up until 2007.
TheRealandOfficialChrisPark doesn’t the J and Z have a middle track for skip stop service because how can it do it on the tracks with local trains?
I'm still devastated to this day that these R42s have retired. As being my favorite model and having everyone's favorite railfan window, it is simply so hard to say goodbye to. I have memories of the R40S type and those I will never forget. These trains are amazing, and I'm praying that the R32s can live another few years.
Although the R32s are crumbling, they still have at least another year left in them. My favorite feature of the R32s and R42s are not the railfan windows, but the sound the wheels make when the train comes to a stop 😎
As the saying goes "All good things must come to an end". I'm very thankful to ride them on every single subway line throughout the 90s and early 2000s! After 50 years of great service I will miss these subway cars! At least I still have my playlist to reminisce on the great memories I have with these trains
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how we all know the end of the railfan window era is slowly approaching.

A sad day for me seeing my childhood cars passing on, I used to ride them between the cars when they served the D line way back when before the R68's I'd give anything to hear the original air release sounds before they were rebuilt

I say, well done. The car body design was done by Sundberg-Ferar, who also designed the M-1 and R-44. The R-42, spreading all over the B division all at once, best represents the transition from pre-war/blackened old junk to a fully postwar fleet with air-conditioning. There were 400 of them plus the very similar 200 R-40 modified front cars, all built by St. Louis Car Company. The 200 R-40 slant fronts were nearly the same inside, with half being air-conditioned, also built by St. Louis. So 800 American built cars all arriving late 1967 to 1971, with no history of mechanical problems due to manufacturing defect.
Well, that's the end of its journey. The very last St. Louis Car Company Car, And yet for 50 years we thought they would retire rapidly after 2001, but no, they still ran and stood strong, and now they're gone. ; c R.I.P.

Honestly it's a bit hard to grasp that they are retiring, thank you R42s for the hundreds and thousands of trips in the 2000s decade on the brown M and N lines. One of my favourite cars ever! Farewell.
For those who live in the NYC Metro area.....the last R42 cars that will still be around are among the most famous train cars on the planet....4572/4573 (which were used in the chase scenes from "The French Connection") are part of the NYC Transit Museum fleet
Its a bittersweet moment seeing a well used train that has soldered on for years and years finally get retired. The sadness that the familiar is gone but excitement to be getting something new. It will be a very sad day when the last R68 is retired and it's only New Technology Trains running.
Miss them so bad. Used to ride them as a J in 2012 to 2014. My dad always called them the old. After school, I wouldn’t take any other train except for the R42. Sad to see them go. You served our transit system well

The R-42’s were delivered in time to bring you to connect with their older cousins on the Flushing Line to ride to see the ‘69 World Series champs , the NY Mets.
Was hoping we could ride St. Louis Cars to one more Mets post season game , but time marches on.
The R 42 was always my favorite subway car. . I was born in New York but moved to the West Coast when I was four. Went back to visit in 1974 when I was eight years old. But never went back again until 2004, 2005, again last year. Nevertheless the R 42 was always my favorite so we car. I actually remember them back in 1974 as well.
Now: R42s retiring
2-6 Years later: r32, r44 and r46 retiring, R211s slide and replace them
2029: R62s retiring, R262s come to replace them
2035-2050: R68s retiring, Our last OTT, future New rolling stock we will never even heard before, but second av subway is completed
2060: R143s retire
2070: R160s retire
2100: MTA might have a new name, the trains are what we dont know rn, and the subway might be all around New York, even east of jamica and flushing

I remember when these were new they had a rough ride and needed attention to there bogies we had the same problem with our C stock after refurb they got new ones plus LU track started to be laid to mainline standards with concrete sleepers and continual welded rail ,still great to see the subway graffiti free and look sharp can’t wait to come over to sample it
The best thing is that they had to put these back in service because the R179s had to be taken out of service.

I'm old enough to remember when these first came out, and back then they were primarily on the F, A, and E lines. I remember the thick blue stripes, bigger door windows, and air conditioning, a new thing for subway riders. They were a rarity on the N and B (West End) lines back then, as we had primarily R-32s, R-38s, and R1-9s on the West End.

My last time riding on the R42 was a year ago. 4816 was the rail car# I was on . A bit fitting to see it leave for the retirement center for all trains.

Sad to see an old friend go. 1st rode these in 1970 or so as a very young teen. We were always excited to ride them and sometimes change trains just to do so, much to the dismay of my friend's mother. Even went so far as drawing up an IRT version of the R42; the R62's showed I almost got it right. I'm going to miss these. Thanks for your service my old friend!!!!!

Will miss these cars. They took me to school from third grade to college and eventually a wedding and a kid later. Glad my son also had a chance to enjoy the R-42 as well.

There are many trains that have retired but I only saw an R33 R36 R40 R40M R46 Some MOW trains and an R68
And there were some Subway cars from the 60s and the 50s and and a few 1930s cars but I will remember all the trains that have retired and remember all their well service
Well I gotta say it's been a pleasure riding the R42s on the B and C lines during my child summer years and also on the j and z line during my late high school years and early 20 years man I'm gonna miss these trains and sadly even though I never gotta a chance to rides these at least one time on the A,E,F,N and Q lines but atleast still gotta chance to ride them on the last remaining lines.
At least I had my fun with them while they lasted.

The R32s and R46s will likely retire sometime in the coming decade so we still have some time.

They became synonymous with the "J" since the 90s. They replace the R16, which was the J line until they were retired. They were very similar to the R40s. But the R40s were faster (my second favorite after the R38s). The original doors had long windows until they were replace with R32/8 type doors. So long buddy! You will be surely missed.

I never had the opportunity to ride these, because they never ran on the b line, except car 4665, but I did get to see 4665 at Coney Island yard, and visit the one surviving pair at the transit museum. I find it poetic that they’re closing exactly fifty years before New Year’s Day, and a new decade begins.

Congratulations to the last of the R42s to attain the half century mark of service. The Lackawanna electrics that ran from Hoboken to Dover, NJ, lasted 54 years with most of the original fleet in service including 3 arm chair equipped parlor cars. I didn't know any other transit electric equipment had come close to that record. What happens to these cars now? Will they be used occasionally or meet with the scrapper's torch? The NY Subway System infrastructure is a mind boggling engineering marvel. Great video. Thanks for posting. @Rich Short That's interesting you experienced those Lackawanna cars, too. In 1973 they still hd 11 years of service to go and had been running 43 years! Thanks for the reply. I can't comment much on the subway cars as I don't know too much about them, but I enjoy these videos.
@Rich Short Yes, it was a huge undertaking changing over the system probably complicated by government who can never do anything quickly or even properly a good part of the time.It turned out the Arrow III cars were not compatible with some other railroads in the area. I don't recall all the details on that bu it was another "oopsie." In this case railfans got to enjoy the old electrics a bit longer. I rode them every chance I got, even short jaunts on lunch hour! I also wangeld a few rides in the parlor cars.
Man I ride this the last time I think around 19 of December 2019 I was with my girlfriend but I didn't have my camera at the time I'm going to really going to miss this train it's the second oldest train many people have mistaken the R46 I remember when it was operating on the E train when the whole switch with the J train back in 2008-2009 with mix with F R V and some G train I'm really gonna miss this I hope MTA will preserve the last remaining. Thanks Dj Hammers; sorry I am posting this late, but I got a chance to ride this last set of R-42's as a J (not marked as a Z in 4798, which was the leading car) just around 8 am starting at Broad Street on Monday (December 30th). I hoped that maybe there would be a second set running that morning during the Z put-ins, but another set never passed by. As with other posters, I had ridden R-42's as long as I can remember (I was born in 1965). Farewell -- except that two of them are part of the Train of Many Metals. Last true RFW's are with the 32's!

It would be nice if one pair of the 50 prolonged service R42s is held for the museum. Unfortunately though, I can't see NYTM getting rid of the French Connection pair, even if a pair from this batch would be far more meaningful for the collection.
I like this one more than the rest because it reminds me of denim jeans. I miss riding these so much. We need to bring them back.
sean li The 50 cars have been bought back temporarily due to door issues on the R179s. This is part of their contingency plans for incidents like this.

I remember taking the #5 to Grand Central transfering to the Times Square shuttle so I could get a ride on the N train. I just wanted to experience the new cars..I thought the air conditioning was amazing...back in the summer of '69. Back then I did not know the cars had different designations except the Low-Vs. I'm 66 by the way...

Good news. It's not retired. I'm riding one on the Z line to Manhattan right now.

After this and when the R32s are gone, no more convenience of looking out the 1st car window. Kids and adults today don't even bother going to the first car to look out the front anymore. These motorman comfort cabins took all the thrill away 😰😥

@@TheRailLeaguer SADLY YESSS. I remember being saddened in 1989 as a 21 year old when they retired the R-10s. I'ma be crushed when the R32s retire. I really think they should have a going-away party for those cars when that sad final day comes. I remember shedding tears about a decade ago when I saw a bunch of R32s on a barge at the 207th Street Yard.
I remember taking this train home from queens to Brooklyn as a kid in the early 2000s. It makes me sad to see them go.

I grew up with a lot of the subway cars built between 1948 and 2000. I will be 42 on 04/15/1978 so I've seen the NYC Subway system trains change, thge city skyline change. I hope they keep these 10 last cars at railroad museums around the NYC and the rest of the USA for memories.

I'm glad they are gone but I'm thankful enough to be a conductor that used them on the J. A lot of the floors were rotted out in the cabs and the ceilings had holes in them.

My favorite car to date was the R38s. But I have a lot of memory of the R42s on the "B" and "D" lines back in the 1980s.

I will miss these cars, rode them many many ties on the Jamaica line. Got my last ride in on 12/19, sad to see them go even if they were very tired looking, will miss their very distinct HVAC unit sound that you would hear when riding on them.

Pity. I liked the variety of New York subway rolling stock in the past. During my 1st subway only trip to NYC in 2007, I was able to experience R32, R38, R40, R40M, R42, R44, R46, R62, R68, R142, R143. What has left now... R46, R62, R68, R142, R143 (and their successors, identical in the design).
