For real. And even if it's an unrealistic story, this scene like others are similar to real life things. Like, a teenager whose mom has mental issues and when she's having a breakdown, he's begging her to stop cause she's scaring him. Mothers are a very good field to experiment horror, they're supposed to be loving and gentle but if they're not they can turn your life into hell and that's why horror with moms can work so well.
As a parent it's fucking excruciating. That whole sequence made me breathe quick uncontrollably. I'm not even mad she didn't get an Oscar, the Oscars is a big cock strokefest, we the audience knows who's truly talented.

An acting treasure. The scene of her clinging upside down to the ceiling and repeatedly bashing her head on the attic trapdoor is probably the most disturbing and freaky thing I have seen ever. Holy moly, that shot freaked me out!
Yeah, she came a long way from Muriel’s Wedding to doing Hollywood movies like The Sixth Sense, and then independent fare like this, but she has been consistently brilliant. I think she’s actually sorta under-appreciated for what an incredible talent she is!
I saw this is the theater in the middle of the day and there were two older ladies further down the row from me and they were not ready for how scary this movie is. I've never heard so much screaming in my life. It really made the movie more memorable.

I've watched terrible true things on the internet and every scarey movie imaginable but nothing has ever fucked me up as much as this movie. The scene when his sister dies then he just drives home and walks into his bed to hear his mother screaming in the background haunts me. I love their reactions but I refuse to watch this again. I only came to see the comments lol
That tongue *Click* in the car caused the loudest screams I’ve ever heard in a movie theatre. I also love how the things mentioned in the grief-counselling become so sinister later on: how her father starved to death, and how her brother killed himself because the grandmother “was trying to put people in him.” This I a film that gets better on a re-watch.
Seriously, I watched it in cinema, and for the entire next week I was on edge. One night as I was falling asleep my brain made me think I heard a tongue click - it's called "exploding head syndrome" and it makes you hear sounds like explosions or your name being shouted out loud, right as you're falling asleep. For me that night, it was a simple tongue click, and I swear I lost it. I immediately stood up screaming, turned the lights on and spent the rest of the night like that. Standing up, with lights on, scared shitless. One of the most traumatizing experiences of my life, even though I know it wasn't real.
“She was on the poster, I thought she was going to be a primary character throughout” Part of the genius of this movie is that she still is a primary character. Like it was described, their physical bodies were merely hosts. The character of Charlie wasn’t just the 13 year old girl with a nut allergy, it was an entity searching for a proper host to fulfill the transformation into Paimon. And that was the entire driving force behind the second half of the movie.
The dinner scene gets me the most. I've had experiences of tense dinners where we had to face awkward uncomfortable silence. And I'm still mad about the Academy ignoring Toni in this!
That sh*t was hardcore man, how does one deal with a horrible impossible situation like that? I liked that aspect of the movie the most, all the cult magical stuff were a bit less interesting

30:29 In order for Paimon to be successfully summoned, 3 decapitations need to take place as there are three heads hanging from his camel and these can be seen in the icon of him showed in that book in one of the scenes. They also appear on his sigil as three little circles on the bottom half. They didn't necessarily have to be of the women in the family. Charlie's decapitation was actually planned as foreshadowed by the sigil inscribed on the post she collided with, essentially the grandmother's cult predestined her to death. The grandmother and Annie completed the decapitations.
The last 20 minutes of the movie absolutely terrified me to my core. When it ended, I went to bed with the lights on and the TV playing - it was that unsettling! Everything up to that point was soul-crushing grief, a familly dynamic in shambles and slightly disturbing things going on you aren't too sure are real or in the mom's head (the title, Hereditary, implies that mental illness runs in the familly, as her entire familly - her father, her brother and mother - were striken with mental health issues [except not really, as we come to find out]). When the end hits, it hits like a brick wall... Paimon was born with Charlie in her body, put there by grandma when she was still in the womb - that's why she acted weird (and loved decapited heads) and why grandma was quite as obsessed with her. Paimon is said to be able to see the future and probably foresaw the steps to have himself put in a male body and instructed grandma (even beyond her death) and the cult on how to achieve that. The ritualistic death of Charlie released Paimon - and then it was all a matter of destroying Peter's psyche so that it could be taken over by him. Remember that scene in the classroom where Peter looked and acted all janky? That was Paimon trying to take him, but Peter was not weak enough at that point. Also, if you go back to the illustration of Paimon, you'll see him holding 3 heads - which in current events are Charlie's, grandma's and, as a last offering, the mom's. This was a long time coming and the familly was really trapped in machinations they were unaware of, kind like dolls in a dollhouse that someone controls from the outside. Mental illness, which is a core theme of the movie, is realistically shown to be hard to talk about, but also how incidious and destructive it can be. Ironically, in the end, it was a misdirection, and nobody ever was crazy. The schizophrenic brother who thought his mom was trying to put "people" in him (grandma's first attempt to invoke Paimon)? 100% correct. The dad who starved himself? Probably not by his own volution. Grandma's dementia? Cult shenanigans. The mom's sleepwalking and nearly killing her son? An inconscious attempt to prevent what is to come. Rewatching the movie, you really can see the cult's doing and presence a lot more.
Fantastic reaction! I definitely think the Grandma has been trying to summon the demon for decades, because Annie’s brother killed himself after accusing the Grandma of “trying to put people inside him.”
I remember watching this in the theatre and everyone just sitting there in sadness and shock when the car accident scene happened. I wanted to run into the movie and wrap the son up in a shock blanket lol the actor managed to portray shock in such a realistic way, I'm still impressed whenever I re watch. There were even some deleted scenes that delved into this further, but sadly they didn't make the theatrical cut. On a personal note, the son cries exactly how my younger brother cries so every time he started crying my older sister instinct would kick into overdrive and it really added an extra layer of anxiety for me
"My father died when I was a baby, he had psychotic depression...my older brother had schizophrenia. when he was 16 he hanged himself in my mother's bedroom" Grandma's husband and her male child had died, probably not suitable hosts for Paimon. That left her daughter to bring into the world a host for Paimon. Consider that removing the head might be a way to release the spirit so it can travel to another body. Charlie died with a beheading and the mom was the most vulnerable so he possessed her. She killed herself with a beheading and Paimon passed to Peter.
Wasn't it mentioned that the brother killed himself because he was convinced grandma was "trying to put people in him"? He never had schizophrenia, he caught on to what was happening, no one who wasn't in on it belived him, so he killed himself rather than let it happen.
The grandpa was never a contender, as I'm sure with these types of rituals and invocations, the demon needs to be brought into your own bloodline to reap the rewards (it can't be just *any* man). His purpose was only to provide a son, which he did, and then he was done away with, either because grandma did care for him at all, as all he was was a mean to an end, or he disapproved of what she was trying to do and was becoming a nuisance, or whatever. A little hex or a curse so that he dies quietly with people thinking he was suffering from psychotic depression, and done. Except grandma didn't anticipate the son killing himself, robbing her of her chance to invoke Paimon. When her daughter became pregnant with a boy, she saw that as a new opportunity and it would still be within her bloodline. Ultimately, that would fail too (with Toni Collette becoming pissed off at her for insisting/forcing her to have the child, and removing her from her life for a good while), or rather postponed, with Charlie becoming the vessel for Paimon until circonstences arises for a "transfer".
I love that Toni Collette was going to take a break from dark, deeply emotional movies and then decided to make an exception and it was THIS - probably one of the most taxing emotional performances for an actor lol
You guys totally missed the teacher in the classroom creepily smiling through the door window when he's walking back to class. Also the ending shot of the house that goes from day to night, in the night time, you can see the cultist people standing around the house naked.
So at the beginning, Annie is speaking at the grief group I believe. She talks about her brother whom committed suicide. Annie also states her brother claimed his mother was "trying to put people inside him." So he was to be the original Pailmon resurrection. Then the son was born, who Annie tried to miscarry, and then I believe she separated from her mother and didn't see her for a long time at some point? I believe Annie's sleep walking (and paint thinner/matches incident) was her subconsciously trying to prevent all of this. The daughter was born and became temporary Paimon and then come up to where we are when the movie starts. Where the cult finally corrects Paimons resurrection.
Some things i've learned ONLY after seeing a bunch of videos that explain the plot. In the theater i couldn't make sense of anything but now i know: *spoilers* - Grandmother tried to get Paimon to possess her son. That's why her son claimed his mother tried to put "people inside him" and ended up killing himself. - Grandmother wanted Peter to be the next host, but his mother wouldn't allow her near him. - Grandmother then accepted Charlie as a temporary solution, and put Paimon in her. - The little girl (Charlie) was possessed by Paimon almost since birth. Paimon is a demon therefore the girl acted in sociopathic ways. - The body of Charlie was sacrificed because the time had come for Paimon to go inside Peter. - The lady yelled outside the school yard at PETER to "get out" (of his own body) so that he would make place for Paimon. - Peter wasn't ready yet (mentally) so they made his mother crazy and vulnerable so Paimon would get in her and torment Peter. - Peter's mother (or better said her body) sacrificed herself with the piano wire to further drive Peter mad. - Peter, having jumped out the window, was finally driven mad and was now ready for Paimon to take over. - The miniatures are a metaphor for the fact that, indeed, the family is completely manipulated by outside forces and really don't have a choice in anything that will happen. It's fate.
Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for this, no doubt whatsoever. In a film with fantastic acting all round she still stands out. Now I think about it I'd probably go as far as to say she's one of the greatest actors of all time.
The film proved quite impressively that there are indeed modern horror films that become instant and justifiable classics, incredibly deep and impressive horror film that stands in a line with films like the exorcist, rosemary's baby, psycho and other masterpieces.
In that dream scene when she said she didn't want to be his mother she meant she wanted a miscarriage to save him from being taken over by paimon subconsciously
If you consult the Goetia, you'll notice that Paimon travels astride a camel, which is the reason why Charlie frequently clicks her tongue -- to call the camel
George, you're right about the conspiracy going back, but you're not going back far enough. If you relisten to Annie in the group session, her brother's "schizophrenia" was a result of Grandma's earlier attempt at the ritual. He literally accuses her of "putting people inside him" in his suicide note! That whole speech rings totally different one you know what's really going on.
I love that in every reaction I watch of this movie, somewhere midway through being in a fit of existential horror horror, people stop and appreciate Toni Collette's performance. Woman should've won all of the awards.
Some of the coolest scene transitions. I really like the one where there is a long focus static shot of a tree against a sky at night holding for a few seconds and suddenly the exact same shot pops in with a bright blue morning sky blue in the next frame bam. I really liked that transition and they did it twice. Not only visual jump but time jump as well and propelled the story. It is very cool.
This was Toni Collette's most dramatic role, before this she'd mostly done comedy type stuff. But her wails after finding Charlies head are some of the most haunting things about this movie, peters actor had one of the best DiD-eqsue snaps I've ever seen. And the fact there's not a single upsidedown cross is so refreshing in a ghost/possession/paranormal movie.
Twice they showed Joanie's doormat and you didn't notice the symbol was the same as the necklace on the dead grandmother, in the attic and was on the pole that beheaded the daughter!
Toni Collette has been quietly brilliant in everything I have ever seen her in, but this right here is just on another scale. How on earth she didn't win every award in the world for this film I will never know. Genuinely one of the best actors of the last few decades.
The work by the actors, especially Toni Colette, make this so eerily effective. The screenplay and direction definitely help (I love the color choices, especially the yellow and teal), but it's gotta be the acting that sold this new classic.
I remember watching this in a pitch black theater - absolutely horrifying. Lots of dread and subtle details that are easy to miss out on if you aren’t completely immersed. The long shots George mentioned are very intentional and may warrant a second viewing. Incredible film.
I’m so jealous of this experience. When I watched it everyone was laughing, especially at the sons crying. Even I thought it kind of sucked. I only really appreciated it when I watched it again at home.
I watched it in a theatre with very few people in it, but those people were teenagers and they laughed throughout. I genuinely didn't like the film until I watched it a second time at home, and then I loved it. So you're absolutely right about immersion. I'm still annoyed about that.

It's hard for me to think of any movie in recent years that made me feel this horrible. I'm glad I saw it in theaters, knowing there were other people around me in a public setting so I was safe lol. Still sorta a modern masterpiece of horror in my opinion.
I first saw this movie in theaters with a buddy of mine, assuming it was just gonna be a casual horror movie to get spooked. Lets just say that buddy of mine wasn't who I would have chosen to get traumatized with lmao
The mom actress was amazing intense. When she found the body and was screaming crying I literally balled my eyes out because she was so convincing like that’s exactly how a parent would be unexpectedly finding their child dead like that.

Something curious is that the devil/demon/god whatever, never had the "need" of been summoned or something like that, all those rituals and shit was just something that he pretend to need just to make feel on control with his followers, he was in control of everything and never need permision, you can tell when he just takes the body of the mother just to accomplished the ritual himself, he even take the dead bodies and put them together to praise him, all that he was doing was just playing with them and his followers just like the mother was doing with the mini houses.
I'm an "olde", and for decades, The Shining was my favorite horror movie, and this film has a lot of similarities with the pacing and cinematography of that movie, but I really love when something surpasses my favorite thing! This movie is deeply scary because of the writing, the acting, score, and the directing. I've never seen a movie with a deeper curse and sense of dread!

It’s so nuts that when the shot is inside the home before the family opens the door after they come back from grandmas funeral (2:52) you can hear footsteps walking around inside the house. THEN the door opens and they walk inside.
This movie had me gutted, everyone was amazing but god someone give Toni Collette every award. She made you feel her pain and grief in that scream and outburst.
Paimon leaves the host after it is beheaded. You can follow the trail through the movie. And after Peter jumps out the window, you hear the mother's head fall the floor. Immediately after, Paimon's little spark floats down into Peter's body.
Toni Collette is amazing in this one... She is such a great actress... The story is pretty bat(blank) crazy but in the end you sort of understand what is going on... And it's insane...
The sequence with the pole was the best WTF moment I've ever seen in a movie. And that noise she makes needs to be a text alert. As to where this was filmed, it was in northern Utah. Once you get out of the city, the whole north eastern part looks like that. I don't get horror. Once the supernatural aspect comes in, my disbelief comes crashing down. We saw this is a theater with about 25% occupancy, late at night. It was nice and creepy for a long time ans I was getting into it being just weird enough. Then we saw Spider-Mom and I just sat there giggling at how absurd it all was as the rest of theater was cowering under their coats. So I guess it's actually pretty scary. Toni Collette is consistently AMAZING!

Love the small details of manipulation: 1. The invite for a seánse in the middle of the mail. 2. if you look carefully, the green paint fall by itself, over the paper with Joane phone number. 3. When she meets Joane "by chance" in the parking lot, shes comming out of a art supply store. And Joanne have the blackboard on her shopping cart. 4. Peter friend smoking weed with him when he can't breath, is on of the persons prostate in front of Paymei in the tree house.
It's well worth watching one of the many excellent explanation videos on RUclips. Once you have a full understanding of the symbolism and lore it makes the film that much better. IMO, it's easily a top 10 horror of all time. My own 2nd favourite.
Somebody probably already said this with me responding so late but the “pitter patter” sound in the very beginning and through the movie I believe is supposed to to be the sound of a camel (or camels) galloping with king paimon riding into “battle”.
I personally find that the scene where she's in group therapy is really funny (unintentionally of course) Like, after she speaks about her own and her families history with mental health issues, just how dead silent the group get, the way the guy next to her just stares. Like how do you follow that up? "Well my aunt died..."
I think it's a mixture of it just coming off so nonchalant and borderline naive about things that just aren't common and extremely tragic and horrific. It kind of reminds me of that scene in Hot Fuzz where the florist is rattling off the laundry list of "accidental' deaths in town. "God rest'em".

I think the father (starved himself) and brother( hanged himself), both killed themselves to avoid being a host once they saw what that evil witch was doing. So, the witch grandmother had no choice but the use her granddaughter. That's why she wanted her to be a boy, "Charlie" was always the host from birth. The grandmother was pure evil. I just wonder why she didn't take the grandson from the start, instead of using the granddaughter as a host. Maybe because she needed three female decapitated bodies? Maybe to mock the holy trinity?
She probably didn't have access to the grandson. The mom said she "protected" her son from.the grandma, but on the other hand, Charlie spent a lot of time with the grandma.
Fun fact: Paimon is in fact one of the eight kings of Hell, discussed in the Ars Goetia. His sigil is very similar to the one in the movie, with one more loop, I guess they made the deliberate choice to change it? He's depicted as a handsome man riding a camel, often carrying several severed heads in a bag.
So many thoughts. First Toni Collette is an amazing actress. There are clues throughout, when she talks about the schizophrenic family member who hanged himself. He wasn't mentally ill. What he was thinking was real. The mouth click scene in the car. The pole scene. I physically felt the brothers reaction in my gut. To do this right after Exorcist is fair play to you guys. This first movie since that one to scare/unnerve me that much. Check out ari asters other movie Midsommer. Also disturbing with a big shock scene as well.
When I watched this for the first time that was at a point where I hadnt been scared by horror movies in like a decade... but this...this was fucking terrifying...the mom especially freaked me out.

You missed both the son and mother were drugged/slipped herbs to weaken them mentally and let the influence of paimon. Plus the light flashes and flares light when she's painting are his influence to draw their attention.

That tongue *Click* in the car caused the loudest screams I’ve ever heard in a movie theatre.
I also love how the things mentioned in the grief-counselling become so sinister later on: how her father starved to death, and how her brother killed himself because the grandmother “was trying to put people in him.” This I a film that gets better on a re-watch.
Seriously, I watched it in cinema, and for the entire next week I was on edge. One night as I was falling asleep my brain made me think I heard a tongue click - it's called "exploding head syndrome" and it makes you hear sounds like explosions or your name being shouted out loud, right as you're falling asleep. For me that night, it was a simple tongue click, and I swear I lost it. I immediately stood up screaming, turned the lights on and spent the rest of the night like that. Standing up, with lights on, scared shitless. One of the most traumatizing experiences of my life, even though I know it wasn't real.

“She was on the poster, I thought she was going to be a primary character throughout” Part of the genius of this movie is that she still is a primary character. Like it was described, their physical bodies were merely hosts. The character of Charlie wasn’t just the 13 year old girl with a nut allergy, it was an entity searching for a proper host to fulfill the transformation into Paimon. And that was the entire driving force behind the second half of the movie.
Simone's face at the end really sums up the movie as a whole. lmao
The dinner scene gets me the most. I've had experiences of tense dinners where we had to face awkward uncomfortable silence.
And I'm still mad about the Academy ignoring Toni in this!
That sh*t was hardcore man, how does one deal with a horrible impossible situation like that? I liked that aspect of the movie the most, all the cult magical stuff were a bit less interesting

30:29 In order for Paimon to be successfully summoned, 3 decapitations need to take place as there are three heads hanging from his camel and these can be seen in the icon of him showed in that book in one of the scenes. They also appear on his sigil as three little circles on the bottom half. They didn't necessarily have to be of the women in the family. Charlie's decapitation was actually planned as foreshadowed by the sigil inscribed on the post she collided with, essentially the grandmother's cult predestined her to death. The grandmother and Annie completed the decapitations.
The last 20 minutes of the movie absolutely terrified me to my core. When it ended, I went to bed with the lights on and the TV playing - it was that unsettling! Everything up to that point was soul-crushing grief, a familly dynamic in shambles and slightly disturbing things going on you aren't too sure are real or in the mom's head (the title, Hereditary, implies that mental illness runs in the familly, as her entire familly - her father, her brother and mother - were striken with mental health issues [except not really, as we come to find out]). When the end hits, it hits like a brick wall...
Paimon was born with Charlie in her body, put there by grandma when she was still in the womb - that's why she acted weird (and loved decapited heads) and why grandma was quite as obsessed with her. Paimon is said to be able to see the future and probably foresaw the steps to have himself put in a male body and instructed grandma (even beyond her death) and the cult on how to achieve that. The ritualistic death of Charlie released Paimon - and then it was all a matter of destroying Peter's psyche so that it could be taken over by him. Remember that scene in the classroom where Peter looked and acted all janky? That was Paimon trying to take him, but Peter was not weak enough at that point. Also, if you go back to the illustration of Paimon, you'll see him holding 3 heads - which in current events are Charlie's, grandma's and, as a last offering, the mom's. This was a long time coming and the familly was really trapped in machinations they were unaware of, kind like dolls in a dollhouse that someone controls from the outside. Mental illness, which is a core theme of the movie, is realistically shown to be hard to talk about, but also how incidious and destructive it can be. Ironically, in the end, it was a misdirection, and nobody ever was crazy. The schizophrenic brother who thought his mom was trying to put "people" in him (grandma's first attempt to invoke Paimon)? 100% correct. The dad who starved himself? Probably not by his own volution. Grandma's dementia? Cult shenanigans. The mom's sleepwalking and nearly killing her son? An inconscious attempt to prevent what is to come. Rewatching the movie, you really can see the cult's doing and presence a lot more.
It's a crime that Toni Collette didn't receive an Academy award for this performance.

Fantastic reaction! I definitely think the Grandma has been trying to summon the demon for decades, because Annie’s brother killed himself after accusing the Grandma of “trying to put people inside him.”
I remember watching this in the theatre and everyone just sitting there in sadness and shock when the car accident scene happened. I wanted to run into the movie and wrap the son up in a shock blanket lol the actor managed to portray shock in such a realistic way, I'm still impressed whenever I re watch. There were even some deleted scenes that delved into this further, but sadly they didn't make the theatrical cut.
On a personal note, the son cries exactly how my younger brother cries so every time he started crying my older sister instinct would kick into overdrive and it really added an extra layer of anxiety for me
"My father died when I was a baby, he had psychotic depression...my older brother had schizophrenia. when he was 16 he hanged himself in my mother's bedroom" Grandma's husband and her male child had died, probably not suitable hosts for Paimon. That left her daughter to bring into the world a host for Paimon. Consider that removing the head might be a way to release the spirit so it can travel to another body. Charlie died with a beheading and the mom was the most vulnerable so he possessed her. She killed herself with a beheading and Paimon passed to Peter.
Wasn't it mentioned that the brother killed himself because he was convinced grandma was "trying to put people in him"? He never had schizophrenia, he caught on to what was happening, no one who wasn't in on it belived him, so he killed himself rather than let it happen.
Payment is depicted in art with a certain number of decapitated heads... 3 I think.
And her older brother died because he thought she was "trying to put people inside him".
He didn't have Paranoid Schizophrenia, he was 100% right.
The grandpa was never a contender, as I'm sure with these types of rituals and invocations, the demon needs to be brought into your own bloodline to reap the rewards (it can't be just *any* man). His purpose was only to provide a son, which he did, and then he was done away with, either because grandma did care for him at all, as all he was was a mean to an end, or he disapproved of what she was trying to do and was becoming a nuisance, or whatever. A little hex or a curse so that he dies quietly with people thinking he was suffering from psychotic depression, and done. Except grandma didn't anticipate the son killing himself, robbing her of her chance to invoke Paimon. When her daughter became pregnant with a boy, she saw that as a new opportunity and it would still be within her bloodline. Ultimately, that would fail too (with Toni Collette becoming pissed off at her for insisting/forcing her to have the child, and removing her from her life for a good while), or rather postponed, with Charlie becoming the vessel for Paimon until circonstences arises for a "transfer".
What I didn't totally get was why couldn't they just have Peter possessed by Paimon? Why did Charlie have to be the host?
I love that Toni Collette was going to take a break from dark, deeply emotional movies and then decided to make an exception and it was THIS - probably one of the most taxing emotional performances for an actor lol
You guys totally missed the teacher in the classroom creepily smiling through the door window when he's walking back to class. Also the ending shot of the house that goes from day to night, in the night time, you can see the cultist people standing around the house naked.
So at the beginning, Annie is speaking at the grief group I believe. She talks about her brother whom committed suicide. Annie also states her brother claimed his mother was "trying to put people inside him." So he was to be the original Pailmon resurrection.
Then the son was born, who Annie tried to miscarry, and then I believe she separated from her mother and didn't see her for a long time at some point? I believe Annie's sleep walking (and paint thinner/matches incident) was her subconsciously trying to prevent all of this.
The daughter was born and became temporary Paimon and then come up to where we are when the movie starts. Where the cult finally corrects Paimons resurrection.
The part where she says, "I never wanted to be your mother" sent chills down my spine the first time I saw this in the theater.

Some things i've learned ONLY after seeing a bunch of videos that explain the plot. In the theater i couldn't make sense of anything but now i know:
*spoilers*
- Grandmother tried to get Paimon to possess her son. That's why her son claimed his mother tried to put "people inside him" and ended up killing himself.
- Grandmother wanted Peter to be the next host, but his mother wouldn't allow her near him.
- Grandmother then accepted Charlie as a temporary solution, and put Paimon in her.
- The little girl (Charlie) was possessed by Paimon almost since birth. Paimon is a demon therefore the girl acted in sociopathic ways.
- The body of Charlie was sacrificed because the time had come for Paimon to go inside Peter.
- The lady yelled outside the school yard at PETER to "get out" (of his own body) so that he would make place for Paimon.
- Peter wasn't ready yet (mentally) so they made his mother crazy and vulnerable so Paimon would get in her and torment Peter.
- Peter's mother (or better said her body) sacrificed herself with the piano wire to further drive Peter mad.
- Peter, having jumped out the window, was finally driven mad and was now ready for Paimon to take over.
- The miniatures are a metaphor for the fact that, indeed, the family is completely manipulated by outside forces and really don't have a choice in anything that will happen. It's fate.
Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for this, no doubt whatsoever. In a film with fantastic acting all round she still stands out. Now I think about it I'd probably go as far as to say she's one of the greatest actors of all time.

The film proved quite impressively that there are indeed modern horror films that become instant and justifiable classics, incredibly deep and impressive horror film that stands in a line with films like the exorcist, rosemary's baby, psycho and other masterpieces.
In that dream scene when she said she didn't want to be his mother she meant she wanted a miscarriage to save him from being taken over by paimon subconsciously
If you consult the Goetia, you'll notice that Paimon travels astride a camel, which is the reason why Charlie frequently clicks her tongue -- to call the camel
George, you're right about the conspiracy going back, but you're not going back far enough. If you relisten to Annie in the group session, her brother's "schizophrenia" was a result of Grandma's earlier attempt at the ritual. He literally accuses her of "putting people inside him" in his suicide note!
That whole speech rings totally different one you know what's really going on.
I love that in every reaction I watch of this movie, somewhere midway through being in a fit of existential horror horror, people stop and appreciate Toni Collette's performance. Woman should've won all of the awards.
Some of the coolest scene transitions. I really like the one where there is a long focus static shot of a tree against a sky at night holding for a few seconds and suddenly the exact same shot pops in with a bright blue morning sky blue in the next frame bam.
I really liked that transition and they did it twice. Not only visual jump but time jump as well and propelled the story. It is very cool.
This was Toni Collette's most dramatic role, before this she'd mostly done comedy type stuff. But her wails after finding Charlies head are some of the most haunting things about this movie, peters actor had one of the best DiD-eqsue snaps I've ever seen. And the fact there's not a single upsidedown cross is so refreshing in a ghost/possession/paranormal movie.

Toni Collette has been quietly brilliant in everything I have ever seen her in, but this right here is just on another scale. How on earth she didn't win every award in the world for this film I will never know. Genuinely one of the best actors of the last few decades.
The work by the actors, especially Toni Colette, make this so eerily effective. The screenplay and direction definitely help (I love the color choices, especially the yellow and teal), but it's gotta be the acting that sold this new classic.

That's one of the funniest ending responses I've ever seen in my entire life.
I remember watching this in a pitch black theater - absolutely horrifying. Lots of dread and subtle details that are easy to miss out on if you aren’t completely immersed. The long shots George mentioned are very intentional and may warrant a second viewing.

I’m so jealous of this experience. When I watched it everyone was laughing, especially at the sons crying. Even I thought it kind of sucked. I only really appreciated it when I watched it again at home.
I watched it in a theatre with very few people in it, but those people were teenagers and they laughed throughout. I genuinely didn't like the film until I watched it a second time at home, and then I loved it. So you're absolutely right about immersion.
I'm still annoyed about that.

It's hard for me to think of any movie in recent years that made me feel this horrible. I'm glad I saw it in theaters, knowing there were other people around me in a public setting so I was safe lol. Still sorta a modern masterpiece of horror in my opinion.

The mom actress was amazing intense. When she found the body and was screaming crying I literally balled my eyes out because she was so convincing like that’s exactly how a parent would be unexpectedly finding their child dead like that.

Something curious is that the devil/demon/god whatever, never had the "need" of been summoned or something like that, all those rituals and shit was just something that he pretend to need just to make feel on control with his followers, he was in control of everything and never need permision, you can tell when he just takes the body of the mother just to accomplished the ritual himself, he even take the dead bodies and put them together to praise him, all that he was doing was just playing with them and his followers just like the mother was doing with the mini houses.
I'm an "olde", and for decades, The Shining was my favorite horror movie, and this film has a lot of similarities with the pacing and cinematography of that movie, but I really love when something surpasses my favorite thing! This movie is deeply scary because of the writing, the acting, score, and the directing. I've never seen a movie with a deeper curse and sense of dread!
Ohhh boy! did not disappoint! A very unsettling movie with lots of stuff you miss on the first watch. The head stuff is actually explained in the book talking about paimon but you'd have to pause to read it or look up paimon lore irl

It’s so nuts that when the shot is inside the home before the family opens the door after they come back from grandmas funeral (2:52) you can hear footsteps walking around inside the house. THEN the door opens and they walk inside.
This movie had me gutted, everyone was amazing but god someone give Toni Collette every award. She made you feel her pain and grief in that scream and outburst.

Paimon leaves the host after it is beheaded. You can follow the trail through the movie. And after Peter jumps out the window, you hear the mother's head fall the floor. Immediately after, Paimon's little spark floats down into Peter's body.
Toni Collette is amazing in this one... She is such a great actress... The story is pretty bat(blank) crazy but in the end you sort of understand what is going on... And it's insane...

The sequence with the pole was the best WTF moment I've ever seen in a movie. And that noise she makes needs to be a text alert.
As to where this was filmed, it was in northern Utah. Once you get out of the city, the whole north eastern part looks like that.
I don't get horror. Once the supernatural aspect comes in, my disbelief comes crashing down. We saw this is a theater with about 25% occupancy, late at night. It was nice and creepy for a long time ans I was getting into it being just weird enough. Then we saw Spider-Mom and I just sat there giggling at how absurd it all was as the rest of theater was cowering under their coats. So I guess it's actually pretty scary.
Toni Collette is consistently AMAZING!
This is one of the most unsettling movies I've seen in a LONG time. It was scary, but traumatic and sad. Like crying whilst vomiting would be an expected outcome lol 😂
Love the small details of manipulation:
1. The invite for a seánse in the middle of the mail.
2. if you look carefully, the green paint fall by itself, over the paper with Joane phone number.
3. When she meets Joane "by chance" in the parking lot, shes comming out of a art supply store. And Joanne have the blackboard on her shopping cart.
4. Peter friend smoking weed with him when he can't breath, is on of the persons prostate in front of Paymei in the tree house.
Also, you can hear when she rips the piano wire before the decaptation scene.
I’ll watch any reactor(s) do this film. Mostly because I shut it off for 30 minutes because I needed a break. Love this movie.

It's well worth watching one of the many excellent explanation videos on RUclips. Once you have a full understanding of the symbolism and lore it makes the film that much better. IMO, it's easily a top 10 horror of all time. My own 2nd favourite.
Somebody probably already said this with me responding so late but the “pitter patter” sound in the very beginning and through the movie I believe is supposed to to be the sound of a camel (or camels) galloping with king paimon riding into “battle”.
I also think the clicking noise Charlie/Paimon makes is how you direct camels when riding them.

Like, after she speaks about her own and her families history with mental health issues, just how dead silent the group get, the way the guy next to her just stares. Like how do you follow that up? "Well my aunt died..."
I think it's a mixture of it just coming off so nonchalant and borderline naive about things that just aren't common and extremely tragic and horrific. It kind of reminds me of that scene in Hot Fuzz where the florist is rattling off the laundry list of "accidental' deaths in town. "God rest'em".
That entire group therapy thing is the cult. Every one of them. It’s emotional manipulation.

This movie is part of the reason I have a hard time going to the theater to see anything. I had the worst crowd. A bunch of kids just laughing at literally everything. Even THAT scene. I'm glad I rewatched it later because it's one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Toni Collette was robbed.

I think the father (starved himself) and brother( hanged himself), both killed themselves to avoid being a host once they saw what that evil witch was doing. So, the witch grandmother had no choice but the use her granddaughter. That's why she wanted her to be a boy, "Charlie" was always the host from birth. The grandmother was pure evil. I just wonder why she didn't take the grandson from the start, instead of using the granddaughter as a host. Maybe because she needed three female decapitated bodies? Maybe to mock the holy trinity?
She probably didn't have access to the grandson. The mom said she "protected" her son from.the grandma, but on the other hand, Charlie spent a lot of time with the grandma.

When I saw the title of this episode mentioning Hereditary, I knew it would be a wild ride.
As expected, this one's a must-watch.
Toni Collette in The Way Way Back with other cast and Little Miss Sunshine are really good.
Fun fact: Paimon is in fact one of the eight kings of Hell, discussed in the Ars Goetia. His sigil is very similar to the one in the movie, with one more loop, I guess they made the deliberate choice to change it? He's depicted as a handsome man riding a camel, often carrying several severed heads in a bag.
So many thoughts. First Toni Collette is an amazing actress. There are clues throughout, when she talks about the schizophrenic family member who hanged himself. He wasn't mentally ill. What he was thinking was real. The mouth click scene in the car. The pole scene. I physically felt the brothers reaction in my gut. To do this right after Exorcist is fair play to you guys. This first movie since that one to scare/unnerve me that much. Check out ari asters other movie Midsommer. Also disturbing with a big shock scene as well.
