Lots of people give birth at home. We wanted to do home births, but because we live 2h from a hospital, we weren't eligible for a home birth. I do know lots of mothers who choose to forego medical help during labour (unless in an emergency of course) and I totally respect their choices!

You need to educate yourself first, before you comment on a video. The foal is still getting oxygen from the placenta, and no, she will not suffocate on the amniotic sac if it's already broken open. If she had been born with the sac fully intact, we would have made a small hole for her, but it wasn't necessary at that point.

Thank you! Luckily for horses, birth generally isn't particularly scary or even all that painful for them :) Researchers figured this out by doing blood samples on horses in labor, and testing the different hormones at different stages in labor versus a control group of mares who were not in labor. Turns out that the stress hormone cortisol is actually reduced in laboring mares, probably a natural mechanism to help the horse relax and help them have such speedy deliveries! Of course there is the rear scenario where there's complications, but luckily that's what humans can help with if needed. Thankfully this was a textbook perfect delivery, so no assistance was needed :)
I don’t understand the hate comments, it’s a very smart idea to let animals give birth by themselves, it almost trains them to do it again in the future. Now I have never had a pet go through labor but I have done many projects about it! By the way the little horse is so cute!!!

Beautifully done! I love that your kids got to experience the miracle of birth and what good little helpers they were to you. Thank you for this video! I'm in the works of rescuing a pregnant mare from slaughter n if we are blessed enough to get her it will be out first time experiencing a foal birth and me n my kids are so excited. Watching your video definitely helped me not be so nervous to let the momma do her thing naturally and only assist when needed. So glad your momma n foal were ok and all went good.
thank you for allowing me to see this beautiful gift from the mare and her foal. I apologize to them both for intruding upon them and request that both be given bags of best quality oats etc to say thank you. God bless you and family and especially the lovely horses amen
I’m so surprised at the rude comments. I was 6-7 when my cat gave birth and I was fine. I’ve attended births several time since then. I think you did a great job with this mare. Given the circumstances: wild mare, healthy birth; I think I would have chosen to do the same as you. If you tried to “help” mama, you might’ve gotten kicked at least. If these comments are too hairy, go ahead and turn them off, I’ll support you. This video went viral to some of the wrong people.
While we can extrapolate for sure that there's a certain level of pain involved, researchers actually measured the cortisol (stress hormone) during labour and delivery, and found that it was surprisingly low! In fact, some mares in labour tested out as being in less distress than some horses during "normal" training/handling activities. This is likely due to evolution; human women have been dealt a pretty terrible hand, since our brains are huge compared to other animals, and we have also eliminated the "survival of the fittest" component. For horses, any mares with a genetic predisposition to having a difficult labour or delivery generally won't live long enough to pass on those genes. Either she will die in labour, and the foal will likely die as well (if in the wild) or just the foal will die. Either way the genetics don't get passed on; only mares with typically "easy" foalings pass on their genes.
Omg you ended up with every moron, troll, internet vet and 10 year old child in your comments 🤣 I think this is a great video. A perfect example of a natural birth without unnecessary intervention and there's absolutely not one thing wrong with letting your kids watch. I love that you use proper terms like vulva and vagina when explaining things to the kids as well. Plus beautiful animals ❤
It's like this video is an ignorance magnet or something 😂😂 Thank you for your kind and intelligent comment though, as it has helped restore my faith in humanity

My mare is due next month but the way she’s bagging up I don’t think she’ll make it to her due date! It’s my first time foaling at home (she foaled away the first 5 times) so I’m very nervous! Especially of some of these red bag deliveries. It’s refreshing to see a smooth, outside birth. Gives me some peace of mind! Congratulations on your beautiful baby ❤️
@@IndigoSkookum She had a beautiful filly on May 30th ❤️ Both mum and baby doing fantastically except we did have to get the vet out as she wasn’t passing her placenta after 3 hours. I checked on her at 2:30am, completely normal, grazing away. I get up again at 3:30am and there is the little girl just on the ground, trying her best to get up. Everything went perfectly thank goodness. I’m absolutely delighted with her. We decided to name her Cleo ❤️ Thank you so much for remembering and asking. Very kind 💕
That's great that you got a healthy baby!! Hopefully the vet was able to extract the placenta without having to charge you an arm and a leg. Congrats!!!
I’m pregnant watching this (not a first time mum) and reading about people wanting you to interfere and I’m like, I would be a very mad mamma if you interrupted me 😂 Like, my second birth was so amazing… at home with no one poking and helping and I did it all myself doing my own thing. Much better than the first where I was told when to push and what to do and bossed around the whole time.
Right?! And ordinarily we would leave the mare alone and watch from a distance, but because she chose to lay down literally at my feet when I came in to feed and clean, we decided to stay because it seemed like she took comfort in our presence. Usually mares wait til the middle of the night and go off alone, so this was a very interesting circumstance. Oddly enough, my friend's mare foaled a couple days later, also in mid-morning broad daylight!
She is doing great! You can actually watch Dulcinea and her baby grow up by clicking the link in the pinned comment :) It's a playlist of their lives so far. Kalimba is a little over a year old now, and Dulcinea's training is coming along nicely too
Hey, it's cool :) Some horses do have complications with birth or even infection after the fact, so I will never fault someone for caring and being concerned
Lol! My kids recently found out about the “birds and the bees” by seeing our dogs mate in the house! (totally not planned 😂) I’ve always thought it would be very cool for kids to grow up in farm life where those things just come up naturally! We did so enjoy watching Dulcinea have her baby and then seeing her walk and nurse. I’ll let them watch some of the follow up tomorrow! 😉 this is just a nice addition to our home education 😄
Thank you so much for the kind comment!! I agree - she rocked it! You can also watch them both growing up - Kalimba will be 2 in May!! There is a link to a playlist in the pinned comment, all the videos of them over the past year and a half :)

It makes me so sad to hear people think like that :( Your words have brightened my evening! Thanks again!

Thanks!! She is almost 2 years old now... if you want to watch her growing up, check out the playlist in the pinned comment! I tried to take a video of her every month so people can see her maturing and growing up
People seem to forget horses are also wild animals and have babies without human help. Great video showing a natural birth. Not too many of those on YT.
Ugh, I feel you sister!! This was a freak surprise for sure. All the other ones I have attended have been middle of the night - once in a violent downpour (and did the mare want to come inside to the warm, dry barn?! Nope!) and one insisted on foaling at 1am in 2ft of snow because I was running late at getting the horses into the barn that night. And she had him up against a fence so he ended up on the wrong side. Hubby had to carry the little thing to the barn because he was disoriented and mama was a PMU mare used to having her babies taken away, so she didn't have any interest in bonding with him. What a night! This birth was definitely one for the record books, for me at least!
@@IndigoSkookum PMU mares break my heart. I hate to say it but I have little love for humanity anymore. I’d rather horses have never been plagued by us considering how much they helped us build our little human empire.
I agree. We bought her with the hopes of retraining her etc but she ended up being so messed up we decided to let her be a pasture pet. She had some much unresolved trauma from that life - and the 6 or 8 homes who had her before me (according to auction records) that we figured she just deserved a life of peace.

@@IndigoSkookum sure I would love to watch that one, and I love horses 🐴
Awesome 🥰
Absolutely amazing, their kids understand the knowledge of horses and foals
Aw thank you! You're very kind.
This was amazing to watch! I loved how you explained everything to your kids and to us the viewers. Your kids are wonderful helpers. Thank you for sharing! ❤
Thank you so much for your sweet comment!! I'm glad you liked it
Beautifully done!
Wow, that's so exciting!! I hope it all works out for you and the mare
I
I was wondering how it went and how your mare and foal are doing?
hats off to you
What a beauty! And big! Glad to see she didn’t have problems.
Thank you!
thank you for allowing me to see this beautiful gift from the mare and her foal. I apologize to them both for intruding upon them and request that both be given bags of best quality oats etc to say thank you. God bless you and family and especially the lovely horses amen
Don't worry, they aren't disturbed
Omg! You got this moma! Almost there! The strength of a mother!
She sure squirted her out easily, especially for a fist timer! Thanks for watching
@@IndigoSkookum yes,sure thank you for sharing,😃😍

I’m so surprised at the rude comments. I was 6-7 when my cat gave birth and I was fine. I’ve attended births several time since then.
I think you did a great job with this mare. Given the circumstances: wild mare, healthy birth; I think I would have chosen to do the same as you.
If you tried to “help” mama, you might’ve gotten kicked at least.
If these comments are too hairy, go ahead and turn them off, I’ll support you. This video went viral to some of the wrong people.
Thank you!!!
Congrats on the baby foal!! so exciting :) she will be a great mom!
Thanks! Kalimba will be 2 years old in May - you can watch her growing up by clicking the playlist in the pinned comment :D
That looked so damn painful and amazing at the same time.
Thankfully less painful for horses than for humans :)
@@IndigoSkookum wow thanks
@@IndigoSkookumit's still extremely painful for them to give birth
Wonderful mother! Those kids are blessed.💕
Thank you SO MUCH!

Even a red bag can have a happy ending if you get there quickly enough
How is your mare doing? Any sign of baby yet?
Congrats!!!
So proud of u horsie😭❤️
Such a beautiful thing to witness. Thank you so much for sharing this birth.
Aw, thank you!
She cries 😭
Little girl copies her mom saying ‘he’s got a huge head’ with a encouraging tone 😂❤️
My kid is pretty sweet
I love how you guys didn’t just yank the baby out like other people ❤
Thank you 💗
What a blessing to the natural process of the whole birthing process❤
I hope she’s ok and I’m so proud of her!!
Awww bless ❤ this is adorable! Congratulations on the foal!!! ( and Dolcy! )
Thanks! Hope to see you back here again!
Hello sorry I’m late but I own a horse named Rose and she gave brith to a beautiful foal last month and congrats on that beautiful foal!
Congrats on yours, too!!
This is so cool. Loved watching this with my kids! ❤️
Glad to hear that more kids are getting exposure to this stuff!
We homeschool too!
There are children around just looking and I and nearly crying and ooing and ahhing like I'm not learning about childbirth at school- AND CONGRATS❤
I wish everyone learned about birth - both animals and human - in school!
Actually I thought at the first part that she was peeing while doing labour (laughing so hard that she cannot stop)
This was amniotic fluid leaking out :)
Oh my gosh, such a beautiful heartwarming moment 🥺❤️
Man I miss my baby boy he lived a happy life and now he’s in a better place
Aw I'm sorry he isn't with you anymore, but I'm glad you got some time with him! What was he like? 🥹
Ok first off. Dulcinea is cutest name for a horse

Its good to show your children this birth so they can learn about life.
Thank you so much for saying that! I've had a surprising amount of people say rude things to me, and imply that I'm a terrible parent for allowing my children to witness something as "disgusting" as birth. It makes me so sad to hear people think like that :( Your words have brightened my evening! Thanks again!
@@IndigoSkookum well i grew up around some animals. We did really have a farm. But we had some goats and rabbits and chickens. And dogs. God bless you.

‘ like to your guys to keep a calm voice” and she sounds so excited…funny
Keep in mind that I am filming with a smartphone about a foot from my face - I sound a lot louder in the video than I do in real life :) Also as an adult, I can be excited without screaming in excitement. My toddler and 5 year old... not so much lol
i cant imagine the pain this horse went though omg
Labour and birth are less painful for most animals - horses included - than humans :)
Well done! A beautiful birth, loved watching it♡♡

People seem to forget horses are also wild animals and have babies without human help.
Great video showing a natural birth. Not too many of those on YT.
Thank you!! I'm still receiving hate from people who think the foal needed help, haha. Ugh. So I truly appreciate an intelligent comment!!
I hope she is okay bc blood was dripping. Great job Dulcinea!
She is okay :) Mama is healthy and happy two years later, and baby is huge and healthy and happy too!
Humans bleed too. It's traumatic but beautiful.
@@dubsfanfirst9189 в родах нет ничего красивого. это буквально худший естественный процесс, который случается с животными (самками)
Everyone gets so lucky with daytime foals and here I sit with ever foal I had popping out at 2 am in freezing winds.
Beautiful horse!
oh its pooping while its in labor...

Does anyone else bear down when watching anyone give birth, whether it be human or animal? I think it is a natural female, who has given birth, instinct.
You must be very empathetic
Well,I've never given birth, but I have found myself pushing along with animal or human mom
YES! I was wondering the same thing!
Yep!
no what the fvck
She’s not actually stupid because she’s really the horse is really getting into labor❤
Exactly! If I interfere unnecessarily, the mare could get upset and halt labour.
