I’ve been on the end of a 6-1 where we were 0-1 up at HT and I’d scored the goal, they were the top team in the division but all it takes is one or two players to lose their heads when the first goal goes in and it’s a snowball effect. It’s absolutely soul destroying when you’re totally up for it and you watch pretty much everyone around you give up one by one, it affects you for a lot more than that game because you lose belief in your teammates knowing they’re quitters so it makes it much tougher to give everything for them going forward.
Did you alleviate some of the pain by downing a Spoons and chugging 3 pints of Guinness after?

Same. I've been part of teams that smash everyone, part of teams that are elite but not league dominators, and I've been part of teeeeerrible teams where we'd lose 5-0 or worse every game. The worst part about being in a terrible team is what you said.... some of the weak characters stop caring, stop believing, and then infect the others.... so instead of it being 11v11, it's effectively 5vs11..... If I was a coach, if I ever see a player give up, to the bench he goes....

I was the keeper on the bad end of a 11-5 result. We’d played 3 games in 6 days before this happened and won them handily but the wheels just fell off in the second half as fatigue set in. I remember screaming with frustration at my exhausted defenders who were backing up into the box instead of closing people down. The opposition teeing each other up inside the 18 over and over. Getting a hand on every shot, but rebounds falling perfectly to attackers for tap-ins. My captain, our CF, pulling me aside near full time and telling me to look at it as practice, not to take it personally. That’s the trick; to not let a bad game defeat you permanently. Competing your heart out but catching every bad bounce just happens sometimes. Man U will be better.

As a Newcastle fan after losing the cup final to Man United this was just what i needed. Plus Liverpool have been my second team since i was a schoolkid in the 90's and i've been saying " If Newcastle don't win it i hope Liverpool do " in every competition since then. It’s 3 points - it’s not the end of the world. You just need to move on from it and learn essentially, Liverpool are still trailing in the table, the game could have gone either way after half time and I thoroughly believe that. What was shameful is how it fell apart, united lacked composure and that is the real root of the problem, it was the mentality that let them down, not the fact that they can’t beat Liverpool. They have beaten both city and Barcelona this season.
