Simple rules i apply are (i) the speaker stand needs to be at least twice as heavy as the speaker that goes on it (ii) the majority of speaker stand weight is at the bottom.
I would surely appreciate a direct comparison between the CSS and Musician bookshelfs 😄 Good info on the stands, but I ended up with SS Solidsteels. Ofcourse its related to taste, but I found them visually more transparent and appealing. Although the baseplate is ballbearing 'suspended', to minimise vibrations (not), you do need atabites or sand to stabilise them further and prevent ringing. That said, homebrew stands are the way to go without compromise, imo.
Fantastic video, this has to be the most economical solution for stand mount speakers stability that I have seen to date. Now if only I can find a 20 inch stand at a reasonable price I will be set. Thank-you
cheapest stand is drive to home depot, buy some garden stones and youve the cheapest option (+ its extendable). At the moment i use customized KEF LS50 Stands for my bookshelfs wich weight 15kg each. Stands with just one steel foot isnt the best option for me stability wise. When i would buy stands i would choose some Sound Anchors Stands
Those B&W stands are beautiful. I have similar but different brand. I like the feet even more than mine. Mine have four larger columns and more expensive. About double the price but it's not necessary. That is a modern day bargain for the B&W ones. A pair of decent athletic shoes cost $200. A steal. A great suggestion you are making. You can't buy stands for that price of that quality. Even 20 years ago stands like that were $300.
What size outriggers did you get for the B&W? Dayton Audio has three sizes and the Soundcity link didn’t work. Also, is there a way to secure the speaker if the base plate is relatively small for the speaker’s base. Sorbothane feet or a sheet, or spikes?
I just got mine. I stuffed them with trash bags no resonance. I thought about sand kitty litter but I live in a humid area. Must say the trash bags worked very well. Very pleased. Rock on.
can make easily stable speaker stands using half inch threaded rod, some 18mm bamboo plywood. bending the rods about two-thirds all the same, then get a bit of 5cm long by 12mm rubber hose, place it in the middle of the bended rods and tie the rods together with some steel wire 8-10 turns, twisting the ends together. on the top and bottom drill 3 holes for the rods and nuts countersunk, and get some nuts washers for both sides, attach the platforms bigger at the bottom than the top. get some moongel drum cymbal dampeners cheap about £7 a packet of 6, places under the speakers to the stand and it will stop the speakers from sliding and give additional dampening and increase bass response. should be used for all types of stands. you could spray the rods or put cable sheaf if you wanted to look better
Hi tharbamar love your show I just brought wharfedale diamond 225 the Terminal on back which up or down for the speaker cable connected better sound thanks
A big thumbs up Tharbamar on you video but I would really like to see is a view of the bottom of the speaker stand showing the Sound City outriggers attachment. Went to the website, not seeing the model of outriggers viewed in your video, When I do setup my stands I will be using the same B&W stands used in your video, on carpet. I've watched this video numerous times but just realized that the outriggers are attached by what seems to be two single lengths with two spikes on each. The Sound City site has nothing like this, they offer four individual pieces, did you purchase your outriggers the way they were presented or did you make adjustment (build them) :)?
Wow Tharbarmar thank you for your advice…it looks like you have carefully thought through this stand stability solution. Do you think this would work with the Kanto SX22 or the Sanus SF22 ? If you could please view those so as to respond to this inquiry, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you, Tharbarmar. I always enjoy your content and your genuine willingness to share your experiences.
I have 2 speaker stands about 18 inches high. the bottom of the stands have 4 cones. To add extra weight to the stands i have 6 house bricks sitting on the square base of the stands. The speaker sits on the top plate of the stand with 4 metal cones. To stop the speaker from moving the bottom of the speaker is bolted to the top of the stand. If i want tilt the speaker up or down, i simply unscrew the bolt and tilt the speaker up by loosening the front 2 cones to raise the front of the speaker, or loosening the the back 2 cones to raise the back of the speaker up. Then i tighten the bolt and the 4 speaker cones.
Hi, thinking about speakerstands and -placement, I find there's this paradox: on the one hand people worry about dampening the speaker's vibrations and look for 'soft', spungy, absorbing materials. On the other hand there's this idea that to enable the bass/woofer to accellerate well (to produce a tighter, accurate bass), they look for a secure fixation of the speaker onto the floor (hence the spikes) or wall. Somehow the solutions for these two ideas seem contradictory. Any thoughts on this? TIA
Yes thats why we always need to tweak and play around with different materials in our systems to see which work the best but you can totally ignore it and use what you think is safe and effective, THANKS
Bass is tighter with steel stands filled with sand, I don’t think Gaia III can improve more stability than outriggers but I would try when I have chance.
Have you looked at the ISINOTECH stands? I just ordered a pair for my Harbeth P3ESR speakers but haven’t been able to locate anybody else who has used them.
What's the name of the big speakers behind you? They are really beautiful! I'm searching for the best option for my Kenwood LS-990 speakers. They are pretty similar dimensions as the ones you have, and I'm not sure to put them on a sand filled wooden stands or on the ones you have?
I have those B&W stands. I tried the 3M velcro trick you shared, but it didnt actually adhere that well, and its really hard to line up when placing it on the stand. Those stands are like $750 EACH now on Ebay. Sheesh.
Hi Tharbamar, do you think Musician Knight 1 could function in a small study room (9 foot x 9 foot) or should I stick with my Dynaudio Evoke 10s there?
The problem with those BMW stands isn't so much the base is with the columns. If you shake the columns near the lower half they are really stable...the flex is when you go higher up to the top. The columns need med to have a wider stance. Now they are still good stands, especially once filled with sand.. .however I feel your solution won't do anything for that wobble as it's flexing at the columns not the base
@Tharbamar I have no doubt it help with stability at the base if the speaker is bumped as that base is too narrow for large bookshelf. However there will still be flex at the column. The higher is goes the more flex there is. So spend $120 now and it doesn't completely solve that issue of flex at the column or spend $650 for the Solid Steel SS6 stands. I have the B&W 805 4Ds and do not want to spend $1400 for their 805 specific stand...so maybe I'll give your solution a shot to my existing Stav 4s and that will be good enough
My solution for any given mini-monitor or stand mount design is simple…….., it’s called the Sound Anchors 3 Post Monitor Signature Stands, while they cost around $975 pair, they’re more than worth it.
"None of these products are paid review, just so you know." So since you didn't say that on your other videos I guess we can assume they are all paid reviews. Thanks for letting us know.
How strange , yesterday I was searching your videos to see what you had about stands. Then just now this one popped up. Thanks!
Very elegant solution to achieve stability!

The monoliths are absolutely unbeatable for the money…I filled mine with a combo of sand and kitty litter…they are totally inert 😉👍

I have the same pair based on Tharbamar’s review from a long time ago. I use mine in bi-amp mode and sounds fantastic.
I want the css critons but I can't find a pair already built, I may just have to pull the trigger and build my own sometime!
I would love a comparative between those stand mount and others as well please! 🤗

Hi, the one I have is made for one of the company by them, it’s slightly different in footers but the rest is the same. Thanks
I'm trying my best to stabilize the Wharfedale EVO4.2 + Stylus 2.
Also, instead of filling the hollow steel legs with sand, fill them with lead shot.

hello the stands you fill them with some filler ??
I’m using hobby sand.
@@Tharbamar sand is fine 👍🏻
If you’re using regular sand you will need to dry it otherwise it will rust from inside.
@@Tharbamar yes yes sure I know the one I use I bought it already dried

My dads speaker fell and now it keeps leaning back instead of standing up straight does anyone have a solution 💀💀
Who sits low enough to use a 24" stand? I don't get it.
Height of stand plus height of tweeter should be at ear level in your sitting position. In my case that’s 37”.
