  • Follow along as I tackle the Kinetic 1/48 CF-188 Hornet. A beautifully molded kit that presents a few challenges. Missing decals being one.
With the Kinetic CF-18/B kit missing the squadron markings, I was able to obtain a set of the Canada 150 decals which presented a challenge in themselves.

I've had numerous people commenting on this video that "airshow jets are kept in immaculate condition".
As stated in the video, this bug went back into front line service still in red. Here is an image of it from Maple Flag the year after in 2018:
    images.app.goo.gl/gKzyN8jBeEEA4Qx5A
    Note the weathering and armament.
Lastly, people keep commenting I am saying "decal" wrong. Maybe according to your regional dialect I am, but not in my area. Just because I say it differently than you doesn't mean I'm wrong and you are right. Same as the letter "Z"... Lieutenant...etc. if that is upsetting you so much, the internet may not be the place for you.

I've been up close to the Blue Angels jets and met all the pilots and crew. Trust me those jets aren't pretty up close either. There are nicks and small dents in places, the gear doors on number 5 are always broke from the dirty roll, and they don't bother replacing them. There are fuel leaks coming out of the engine and they said this "you know something is wrong when there isn't fuel leaking". They are at the last of their service life. These jets have everything stripped out of them except for what they need to fly. As soon as they max their time they go straight to a museum or boneyard. There is paint always getting chipped off the aircraft so they carry paint with them for touchups when needed. I can't wait to see how the super hornets look with the blue angels, though they will have to change a few things in the routine due to the weight of the super hornets being heavier.

    • @TheModelGuy
      @TheModelGuy  5 лет назад +3

Canada doesn't have dedicated Bugs for the airshow circuit, they have all their systems in place for a quicker re-entry to service.
It will be cool to see the Blues in Super Hornets but I don't think they'll be modifying the show too much. The Super Hornet is heavier with more thrust, so it balances out. Plus they're stripped and fly slick so it shouldn't affect performance. It will be awesome to see. Hope they come to Alberta next year.

Fantastic. The weathering in my opinion was tastefully done.
I will also add the add the way you narrate your build makes it easy to follow along.
That has to be the bright spot of your display cabinet.

Just to correct you on the number of CF-188's Canada purchased. In 1980 Canada purchased 138 CF-188's with 98 being the single seat variants (CF-188A) and 40 dual-seat variants (CF-188B) with options for 20 more, which were never exercised. The CF-188 was delivered starting in 1982 with the last one in 1988. There were 3 Squadrons permanently based in Germany totaling 54 CF-188's. The remainder, 5 squadrons, 2 which would reinforce Europe in the event of war, were based in Canada for defense and training.
In 2002 major upgrades to the CF-188 were started. 62 single seat and 18 dual seat models (total 80) were upgraded to the current F-18 C and D standards. Today there are only 76 operational CF-188's in service. 20 have been lost in accidents with the 42 remaining being used for spare parts, training aids, donated to museums or sitting in storage awaiting disposal.
Due to a severe lack of operational readiness of the current CF-188's in service, Canada has purchased 25 used F-18's from Australia, 18 for operational use and the remaining 7 for testing and spare parts. A new fighter competition is currently underway but the CF-188, due to political blundering, will not be replaced till around 2032

Wow -- that design looks good in those colors!
The Canadian Maple Leaf is a nice, basic design which is why it adapts so well to different situations.
2 superheroes -- Captain Canuck and Guardian use the Canadian flag in their costumes --, and now this jet.
I wonder what they will replace the F-18 with in Canada? Their jets are about as hard-used as the Legacy Hornets have been in US Navy service. The USN F-18 A-Ds were so hard-worked they had to be retired from carrier duty. They passed on the least-worn planes onto the US Marine Corps which was getting desperately short of serviceable fighter jets. I know Canada bought at least 24 used Australian F-18A+'s because those were in better condition than anything the USN had available to sell which is not much anymore...!

I'm quite fond of the Saab J35 Oe Draken in red with white stripe. It's a strange looking bird to begin with, like a rejected design for 1 of Anderson's Thunderbirds, even moreso in that paint scheme. Not only is the stripe quite difficult to place accurately, but it also has a rather challenging, large decal on the top surface which required significant amounts of soft and set to get it to conform properly. Odd looking though it may be, it's still one of my all-time favourite builds.
Other than that, the Tiger Meet paint schemes applied to the British GR4 Tornadoes were usually very nice.

Greetings from the UK. I had similar fit problems with an Academy F111C, the section forward of the the rear of the cockpit refused to fit the rear fuselage. I had to fit alignment tabs to the rear in order that the flex in the main fuselage section would conform to the cockpit section, then use loads of filler(Perfect Putty) to achieve a level surface. That was weeks back and I'm still not satisfied with the panel line re-instatement, oh well I will get there eventually. BTW if my airbrush was throwing all those bubbles back into the colour cup I would give it a thorough strip-down and clean!

I'm not so fond of special/anniversary schemes...
I do enjoy the three tones green, wrap around camouflage used by the Luftwaffe on their F-104s.
Good result though with this red "mounted" Hornet!
And cool sense of humour there at the end. :-)

    Nice build.
I'm iffy on weathering. I mostly weather (some) if it's a WWII aircraft... and, honestly, if I'm in the mood. So often I'm just looking at the color scheme and want a good example of it. Though if it's really interesting weathering, I may try to copy it.
The kit... I don't know what's up with Kinetic. I've seen limited run kits with better attention paid to the instructions. There's so much that's just *vague* on top of incorrect in them. (Such as the tail stiffener plates on the PE.) And the fit - if they'd mold the refueling probe door closed with an option to cut it out if you want it, for one... I think the nose is the biggest area of problems with getting the major assemblies together. It's frustrating. (And yes, the intake trunking is another somewhat vague spot, too, that looks like it should "just fit" but doesn't.)
A little more attention to detail on their part would go a long way. But, well, it's part of what modeling's all about - I do like your fix for the top/bottom fit issue, I've got a few of these kits lined up (building a B next, then other kits for later models, but I have SO MANY MARKINGS to do I'll be at it a while) that I'll keep that in mind.
Edit: Also, seriously, people were giving you grief over how you pronounce decal? Yes, I'm American, yes, it sounds funny to me, but I've got friends who live up north of the border and we've had just general laughs over each others pronunciations. It's a big wide world. People say things differently. You "deckle" your way, I'll "Deecal" mine, and enjoy that there's people sharing in the hobby.

      Thanks for your thoughts McCann,
I have their new CF-104 kit and it is worlds above this one. I will give Kinetic credit that they are improving on their quality. I haven’t caught any errors yet on the kit and they are revisiting their F-16 with a new tooling. So I won’t give up on them yet.
I did their older Tracker offline and yeah, it was simple, some errors but in the end looked decent enough. It was a lot of extra work though.

even though they are ornate and hard to do the Canada show bird's have been some of the greatest you will ever see and our US forces we do show birds from time to time but rarely go all out on a show scheme and for our navy hornets the blue angles and regular CAG bird's is about the best you'll get.

When painting, best to go from lightest to darkest. And when dealing with large decals try cutting them into smaller, more manageable pieces.
Also in regards to the multi part wheels, this is done to make painting easier. You can paint the tires and wheels separately, then glue them together without having to mask anything.

    • @TheModelGuy
      @TheModelGuy  5 лет назад

I was more concerned that cutting the larger decals would lead to issues lining them back together.
As for painting, I do usually go light to dark, but on the red tails I was concerned of bleed through and painted them after they were already red. Turns out it was a non-issue
