One question I've been getting is "I can test the ice maker and it will dump with ice, but it won't do it automatically, only manually. Why is it doing this?"
The answer: LG refrigerators are designed to only cycle the ice and icemaker if the temperature in the icemaker is at or below 10*F (-12*C). You need to get a thermometer and verify that the icemaker compartment is at or below this temperature. If it is not, then it won't run. This also means a sensor could be bad that'd otherwise register the correct thermometer-verified temperature.
    Hope this helps!

      Hi Ben,
I have a home sale pending on my ice maker working. I have no issues replacing the ice maker but I am not so sure it is the cause. I have an LG LMX25984ST/00. The water line is working to fill the ice tray and the cubes are freezing, the arm comes out but never dumps the ice and I hear a constant motor running. I took off the cover and reinstalled it so I can watch during a test cycle. I can see the arm coming out and the gears turning, and hear the water filling, etc. I put a temp sensor in the ice bin with remote display and will check temp after a few hours. I ruled out water line issues but not sure if it is a temp sensor issue or the ice maker motor issue. If the temp is the issue, would the motor sound continuously trying to dump ice with the arm out? where is the temp sensor in this refrigerator? I want to check voltages but I don't have a schematic. I would gladly pay a consult fee for your help. I can't believe the sale of my house is dependent on a working ice maker.
      TIA
      Diana

@@DonofrioPetTV motor shouldn't be turning constantly from my experience. Could be a stuck gear or a wire that's constantly sending voltage. I'd look maybe at the new icemaker

@@DonofrioPetTV My honest opinion is its the icemaker. I'd buy it from somewhere it can be returned if that isn't the issue. I shill for Appliance Parts Pros, but most of them should be able to deliver one pretty fast. If the motor is twitching but not actually cycling during the call for ice, there's gotta be something defective there. I try to watch my comments/info as much as possible, and your issue is the first time I've heard of that, and it does sound like maybe there's a voltage interruption or the motors' going bad causing no automatic run of ice.

Hey Ben, Thanks for the video. My issue was that the ice was freezing but not dumping automatically, I had to press that reset button for a couple of seconds to activate the manual dump. I checked all my gaskets and ice chute flap, all good. I threw a thermometer in my freezer overnight and it was a good 0 degrees. It was bugging me so I pulled my fridge forward and checked the back for dust bunnies. I know I cleaned that area last year or so. I noticed dust again on the coils and surrounding areas so I vacuumed those out BUT as I'm looking around towards the bottom inside of the floor area, I saw some vents that faces the floor completely clogged so I cleared those out as well and I left it alone overnight. I woke up to a half full ice bucket! It worked and I also noticed that my freezer temperature is reaching -4 now. One thing to mention; Be patient, as the ice falls into you ice bucket, it helps cool the ice maker area to trigger the auto dump. Hope this helps others with this same issue. Good Luck!

Hey Ben. Thanks for the video. We’ve had the same LG refrigerator as you for 6 years and it has had the same problem for the entire time. We’ve had the LG guy out to look at it twice. Each time they replaced something but it does the same. The thing makes ice but the area below the auger and above the drop doors gets clogged with ice. When this happens you can sometimes stick your fingers up through the drop area and jiggle the ice loose but mostly you have to remove the ice maker/auger assembly. This is problematic as the ice mounds up at the bottom of the assembly and blocks it from removing easily. It is guaranteed ice is going all over the floor. You then have to dig the ice out of the hole in the door. This happens usually twice a week (for 6 years). Any suggestions?

I'm so frustrated with our LG LMXS28626S. Suddenly stopped making ice yesterday. This model doesn't seem to have an ice tray dump test button, which is a bummer. When I opened the water reservoir at the bottom, the tank is empty. I can still get water out of the door, but not ice. You mentioned the tank area and how to get into it in this video, but I've no idea which of these components might need to be replaced.

Great video. I'm having an issue with the ice maker leaking upon fill up. When using the test button and watching as the tray fills with water, some water flows between the tray and the plastic that holds the tray in place. Secondly, when the tray has ice in it and then spins to dispense the ice, the ice sometimes does not dump out of the tray and the unit makes a horrible loud pounding sound as if it's stuck. It's not stuck, it rotates but sometimes the ice does not come out. These issues seem tied together. I do notice some ice forms where the overflow happens and perhaps prevents the tray from turning fully. So, the problem seems to emanate from the filling process, as if there's too much water going into the tray. Any ideas on how to regulate this?

    • @bensappliancesandjunk

Check water pressure going to fridge. If its over-filling, its possible valve (from supply to fridge) is too high. Maybe try lowering/shutting off valve slightly.

My LG icemaker would dump ice and refill whenever I pressed the test button but would not cycle automatically. That suggests that the mechanisms are all functional but the logic isn't working, so I did the "computer thing": I rebooted the refrigerator. I pulled the power, counted to 15, then restored the power. (I did that at the circuit breaker rather than having to wrestle the refrigerator out to fool with the plug.) After that the icemaker worked fine.

I have a question about our LG LFX33975 French-door refrigerator purchased on Amazon in 2014. Clearly it was a 3rd party seller because the box truck dropped it off in our front yard just before midnight and just left it for me to take off the doors, as well as my front entry door and storm door so the beast could be hauled inside, in January, while heavily snowing but I digress.
Cooling has always been warmer than whatever it's set for in both the fridge and freezer.I opted for the 3 year LG Premium Care extended warranty for a little over $300 and after that LG only offered a 2 year plan and the price increased to about $500, but we bought it anyway and it’s good thing we did because shortly after re-enrolling, everything in the freezer suddenly melted in April 2017. After almost 2 weeks, a tech finally arrived and said it needed a compressor, a drier, and condenser. He ordered the parts and left. The parts arrived and a week later a different tech arrived and said it only needed a circuit board so he took the parts with him.
I don’t recall if we had to wait for the board, but I think he had one. After that, the fridge was the coldest it had ever been at 38 degrees.
Then in August 2018 it wouldn’t get any colder than 50 degrees so after another 2 weeks a tech came out and said something about a large plastic center section being updated so again the part was ordered and eventually installed. That lowered the temp to 40 which is what it’s been since the day I plugged it in except for the time mentioned above where it hit 38.
Anyway, one day everything melted in the freezer again and the fridge seemed stuck at 50 so I again called for service but by the time a tech came out, the fridge seemed to be back to normal so the tech didn’t find a problem.
I had a repeat of that in June 2019 but this time I was told I’d have to pay for the service call if no problem was found. Like the other time, the fridge normalized by the time they called in mid-July to schedule the service call so I just cancelled. Since the extended warranty seemed to have been a waste of money, and the coverage offered was reduced to yearly while increasing the price, I let the coverage go.
Well it’s August 2022 and for the past few weeks we’ve been noticing the milk has been starting to go bad way before the expiration dates, the assumption being the store may not have been refrigerating ‘em promptly after arrival, but then a few days later we noticed water on the floor.
The fridge had a 50 degree temp and the freezer was about 20 degrees. A Google search said it had a blocked drain line so I took the large plastic center section out and I didn’t see any ice but the tray was full of very cold water. I left the fridge unplugged for a day but the drain was still plugged so I tried poking some thin plastic tubing from an air shock into the tube but kept hitting an obstruction so I tried going upward as well from the back of the fridge, same obstruction. While contemplating my next move, I found the water had drained and the plastic tubing no longer found any obstructions.
After a day of normalizing the fridge, the lowest it would go is 46 degrees and 11 for the freezer so I looked at the board, nothing on the LED. I pressed the button once and both, the upper and lower fans in that large plastic panel in the fridge started running. The compressor and the fan next to it were running as well but I think that test cycle only lasted about 5 minutes before resetting itself. At that point the compressor felt hotter than usual. I should say the compressor is also quieter than it was when new.
I noticed the fridge said it had “Smart Diagnosis” so I found the procedure in the manual and called LG. I had to ask for it and was then transferred to a tech that didn’t speak English very well. I was instructed to lock the panel and press some buttons while holding the phone up to the speaker in the top right hinge until the series of squeals stopped and then the guy asked for the temps before concluding it needed a compressor.
Since the compressor has 2 years left on the 10 year warranty, he texted a couple places to call but labor would be on me. The first place was the place that has been here many times but they said they no longer service LG. The next place said $800 if the compressor was all that was needed. I called LG again for more options and they texted 3 more. The first said $500-700 but they were 60 miles away and didn’t service my area. The next one was just a guy's name and when called, it said “call rejected.” The last one was 250 miles away so obviously that would be a waste of time.
It’s a shame this model was included in the class action lawsuit that was settled. The date of manufacturer and history of problems matched perfectly.
I looked up how to replace a compressor and honestly it doesn’t look that bad since I’ve been doing A/C work on vehicles for over 40 years and it’s only R-134a so I have a vacuum pump to evacuate and a manifold set to charge it but then I read about the board will need updating so I guess that’s out. It may not even be a compressor issue so I thought I’d ask your opinion before having to go into debt for another refrigerator.
Consumer Reports says for 34” and wider, the top 4 models are LG, for 31-33 inch, the top 2 are LG, and for 30 inch and narrower, the top 2 are again LG. Maybe the problems were fixed but I guess time will tell. ($4500 for #1) But I’d NEVER buy a fridge on Amazon ever again. Lesson learned.
I know you recommend the pricey Bosch as the most reliable but my wife refuses to leave the door open while filling her water bottle.
And you know what they say: happy wife, happy life.
Anyway, is there anything I could try on this LG LFX33975ST?
I have my multimeter at the ready. Thanks.

great info. my ice maker seems to work ok most of the time. the ice had been getting stuck together so I reduced the water pressure to the ice maker and the tray now fills without overflowing or splashing. However, if the tray fills with water and someone happens to open and close the fridge door right away it can cause water to splash out and get the ice clumped together. The odd thing, and maybe there's a sensor that controls this, but if we use alot of ice and maybe the ice holder is half full it won't drop the ice and refill. I have to buy ice, fill the holder almost to the top, and then it cycles normally.

Have you done any videos for the lower\freezer ice maker? Ours is intermittently dumping water in the bin and creating a block of ice.

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Год назад

Not yet. That requires me to own an LG fridge to do repair tutorials on and getting one used that actually works is next to impossible. 90% of the units I am offered are totally trashed sealed systems. Could fake a video though.

@@bensappliancesandjunk A fake video would be awesome! 🤣
Actually, after I watched your upper video I went and looked for a reset switch on the lower and found it. It doesn't fix anything though because it still intermittently fails to eject ice and dumps water on top of the existing ice which runs into the bin and forms a block. I wonder if the motor can't produce enough torque to twist the tray enough to eject the ice every time.

Hey Ben, great info and video. Very nicely done. Question for you, my frig will supply water as required, the holding tank was not frozen and seemed normal. The ice maker is operational. The issue is the water is not filling the tray. The demand for water doesn't seem to happen. Is there a test for that or what could be the issue? Again the water is working as it should otherwise.
    Hoe you have an idea.
    Thanks, Dan

Our relatively new refrigerator (about 2 years old), has sprung a leak in the ice maker. I can't tell if it's coming from a hole in the hose in the maker, or near that hose. I don't know what to do, as I'm legally blind, but Mom and I saw water dripping down when the machine went to refill the ice cuber holder with water. It was coming from the right side, when you look at the ice maker. There is a white/beige hose there. The water has been dripping down and freezing, causing the ice to clump up and not dispense. Also, there was a slab of melted water in the bin, on the right side (facing the ice maker when you are looking into it). Any ideas? Who do we even call to fix/replace this part? Do you think I can order a replacement ice maker and install it myself? I'm visually impaired, but I'm really good at these kinds of jobs. I let my fingers be my eyes...... And thoughts? And thank you for this video! It helped me to understand more about what I'm dealing with! Thank you so much!! -Molly

Not at the moment, sorry. If you aren't getting any water whatsoever, I'd make sure water valve is working, and if it is, there may be an ice obstruction in the water line that's frozen it to where no water can get thru.

My ice maker, when the reset is pushed, will turn upside down and dump the tray but stays upside down. It won’t go back to the starting position until I close the doors. Then after it fills with water, and freeezes/becomes ice, it stops. When I open up to check progress, the tray is slightly tipped but appears to be stuck partway through the rotation. I bought a new icemaker assembly, installed it and it functions the same, only makes one batch and requires the reset button to dump and start over.

The reservoir was frozen! I tried to pop that pin carefully, but it snapped off! Once I had the reservoir exposed I kept the fridge door open for about 10 minutes. Then the water dispenser shot out some ice, then water started flowing again. I was able to put it back together with the screw, even though the pin snapped.

My ice compartment doesn't seem cold enough for the ice to freeze and the cycle to complete. Water is dispensing and filling the tray but never freezing. I have confirmed the temp in the compartment isn't sufficient. I've read through most of the comments but most seem to focus on the frozen cubes not dumping. I can't get them to freeze. I don't see any obstructions to the airflow and gaskets.

Question! My ice is working fine the problem is there is a bit of water freezing up and clogging up the chute area and not allowing the ice to dispense. I removed the ice bin and cleared it and it still did it again… why is this happening? I pressed the sensor like illustrated in your video and it turns properly but a little bit of water pours out and falls in the tray is this normal? I’m thinking this is what’s causing the blockage and freezing when it hits the bottom? I don’t know 😩

You gave me the confidence to try to fix it rather than pay hundreds of dollars to a technician. Turns out that there was some ice stuck under the tray that prevented it from flipping. WARNING. He says to "push" the tab to remove the lower water reservoir cover. DO NOT DO THIS, it will break the tab and you'll need to buy a whole new reservoir cover. Without this tab, the cover will flop open when you open the door, even when the top screw is replaced. I suggest using needle nose plyers and carefully squeeze and twist the tab to work it out of the hole.
