my grampa was an electritian and setbuilder for the series. i was at the Hollywood premier for the movie when i was five . i was on the set for an episode or two. met Adam West there also.
The year prior, 1965, Burgess Meredith had a significant role in the movie "In Harm's Way" that also starred John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda and several other A-list stars. I believe that is why his salary was higher than the other criminals.
William Dozier was also the narrator of The Green Hornet also Madge Blake was a regular cast member on Leave it to Beaver playing Larry Mondello's mother before Batman
A Chevy Impala cost about $3K in 1966. The equivalent car in 2020 would be about $40k (13x the old price). The average price of a house in 1966 was $20K, it's now about $220K (11x but in some areas its 50x). A loaf of bread cost $.20 in 1966 and its now $3 (15x). My point is all those websites that claim inflation has only been 8x in 60 years are talking rubbish. It's actually 12x - 15x. So, $250 would be much more like $3000-$4000. Not a massive amount but "Not nothing"...
In 1966 we still were on the gold standard in the US and the smaller pays are reflecting the fewer days worked (can't get a SAG 1966 rate sheet) Meredith was an "A" list , West was playing the title character so the high pay, it was shot fast and that 26 day schedule kept costs down. The minimum wage that year was $1.60/hr.
No disrespect to fans of Gotham or Christopher Nolan's Batman, but this is the Batman I love. There is already enough darkness and "gritty reality" on the everyday news just look at at Israel and the rest of the middle east. I prefer fun, campy, unrealistic pure escapism.
The wage disparity between villains boils down to Meriwether filling in for Newmar, who was on another project, Gorshin only contracted for one performance, Romero refused to shave his moustache and was a makeup problem, and Meredith was a solid SAG member with a deal with Warner Brothers.
Interesting to hear the amount of money the cast made on the film. I’m glad Burt Ward was well compensated, though I’m a bit surprised to hear Burgess Meredith made as much as he did, especially compared to the other villains. Not surprised to find Adam West made the most money. He is playing Batman/Bruce Wayne, the titular character and it makes sense, though I wish Burt Ward was able to have made more money on the show, but I guess since he was young, they exploited his youth when it came to payment, which isn’t that surprising to hear about in the industry. Thank you for another Batman video Rick! They’re really cool to watch and learn about.

Burgess Meredith had been in Hollywood for decades. He rated it. And after Batman ended, after a couple of years, he made a comeback in the early to mid-seventies, eventually ending up as Mickey Goldmill. Cesar Romero was great in his role, but he wasn't in the same class as Meredith, acting-wise, even in his heyday, and perhaps the producers took that into account. Frank Gorshin was terrific, though, and deserved more, even though he was working as an impressionist. He really tore into his part tooth and nail. And Lee Meriwether was excellent, too, rating more money. Interesting that Van Williams played the voice of the president. Williams later became the Green Hornet.
I met Ceasar Romero when I was a little girl. I don't remember it but my mom told me about it. He wasn't in this show yet, I was quite young and he was a movie star back then. I wish I had met him after he was in this show, I would have known who he was lol.

The only problem with translating salaries to modern values is that it goes strictly by cost if living. They really should do these conversations based on comparable salaries today (compared to extras pay per movie, compared to supporting roles ppm, lead protagosts ppm, etc.). Going straight cost of living only tells you modern buying power and doesn't give a proper salary comparison.
The salary conversion to more current amounts is only supposed to be a quick and simple number to give people an idea of what those 1966 numbers would be today... approximately. This type of video is just for fun...
Meredith was at the top of his game, a really popular character actor at the time with many lead roles on Twilight Zone to his name and much more besides. He starred in Of Mice and Men with Lon Chaney at the cinema. While Romero had been a star, he was something of a fading star by this time. The film industry works like pop music or sport. The people who pull the crowd can negotiate the biggest salaries. No one got ripped off, it's more that their agent could not persuade a producer to part with any more cash. And the basis of negotiating power is their pulling power at the box office.
You might look into how much the Batmobile made. Remember, Ford had sold their Lincoln Futura show car to George Barris for a token $1. George put a lot of time, effort and money into creating the Batmobile, and was paid to create it. It sold at auction for $4.6 million in 2013. How much is that in 2019 $$$? I was just a little bit too young to be into "Batman" when it was on the air, although I do remember my mom buying a pattern at the grocery store to make a Batman cape and cowl with material and velcro, which she did make for me. When I was a bit older, I really got a lot more into "Batman" watching all the after-school reruns and LOVED it! Sometime in the early to mid-70's, I first saw the "Batman" 1966 movie on a local channel late-show. I had never heard of or seen this movie before. Then I remember seeing it when our local movie theater was showing old movies on Saturday afternoons - I want to say that was winter 1974? Many years later, late 80's-early 90's, I was back in college, and I took time off from my studies to go see this movie at one of the commons areas in one of the dorms. I certainly really LIKED this movie. I get it was probably pricey in 1966 dollars - are you sure it was made in '66? Wasn't it made during summer hiatus after the 2nd season? How did it do at the box office? Certainly, it has a cult following among Batman fans!
I love this movie and the series, was a big part of my childhood. My cousin and I would beat up the couch cushions and pillows (they were the bad guys) and we'd put them in the dog kennel they had as the jail !! Fun times!!
Burgess Meredith was once a major actor in Hollywood and a highly sought after character actor in TV and movies most of his life. This guy never had a problem finding work especially in his later years (remember Rocky). Also, he was fantastic in his portrayal of the Penguin, a true joy to watch. It's no surprise he was highly paid for this role.
@@randybarnett2308 I don't know, he was twice nominated for an Acadamy Award and he was nearly nominated a third time for playing George in the 1939 film "Of Mice and Men." He's truly one of the greats.
MsBackstager: You're right; each star's salary was based on his/her resume. That's why they have an agent, to negotiate appropriate salaries. As for Adam West, he had supreme leverage, knowing that not only did the producers desperately want him for the film, there is no "Batman" movie without.....Batman!
Gil Perkins was also a stunt man and may have acted as both on the film. Burgess Meredith was the most popular villain on Batman, so much so they kept extra scripts on hand for whenever they could get him.
Frank Gorshin who played the Riddler didn't make as much as the Joker or the Penguin. As the story goes, after the first season was over, Frank Gorshin won an Emmy for his portrayal of the Riddler. So his manager told him to ask for a raise since he was now an Emmy Award winner. Frank asked for a raise but was turned down for a raise to which he then refused to do the role for the second season which explains why he was never seen in season 2! He was finally given the raise and he was back for season 3 but he only did 1 episode, which I think wasn't fair at all seeing that Joker and Penguin had 2 or 3 episodes in that 3rd and final season!
All in all the actors were paid well. And the budget was not huge so all the pay days were fair. The writers sometimes get the bad end of the stick but not here and it is obvious the writer did well which if it weren't for him not actor would have a thing to say. Good for the writer getting paid well.
Burgess Meredith on the Twilight Zone and other films.... he was already a name well before Batman! The fun thing about this show was that each week you never knew which bad guy was coming back into town! But don't forget to tune in on the same Bat Station, to find out! Ok I have to be honest here, my mother taught me to never lie, unless it was tax season. I had a Batman Utility Belt back in the mid 1960's, with Bata-rang etc.! Don't hate me I was trying to be a do-gooder! lol
Hey Rick Thank you for this. Batman is my favourite hero. Did they happen to have any info on the amount that the film grossed? Thanks for what you do.🙂
Yes, many have been asking me about this. I added it in the description below. Anytime I may miss some thing I have a correction I’ll put it in the description. The film made 1.7 million in 1966 value.
Gil Perkins started his career as a stunt man and he not only acted in Batman, he also coordinated fight scenes and other stunts. His salary is so much higher that the other goons/henchmen because he was doing two jobs.
Reginald Denny's role in as Cmdr. Smidlap (I may be misspelling that name) was not his first Batman appearance. In the Riddler's second appearance in the first season, he had played King Boris.
Reason why some actors🎭 were paid more is they were already experienced and more famous actors.🎭 Burgess Meredith, Cesar Romero,🎭 and Frank Gorshin were already movie stars and without the 3 stars🎭 mentioned the batman movie and series probably would not of received the attention it got, people are drawn to movies because of the storyline and/or the star or stars🎭 who act in them. The more starring roles an actor gets the more fame they'll recieve resulting in bigger paydays. Star🎭 power brings in the audience and brings in the $$$$
Burgess most would say was the best actor(though he rarely was the star) but at the time of this movie Alan Napier had about twice as many credits so he was much more accomplished at this point but he died a few years later & Burgess kept doing movies for another 30+ yrs so he passed him on that end too
Hey Rick, are you able to show the production report that you gathered these figures from? I have a Production Budget report from Fox that lists a number of those salaries as very diffferent figures. Happy to send that to you? Also, just a head's up Burt woudl have been 21 in 1966, not 19. A cool additional tid-bit; the Presidential voice on the phone was none other than The Green Hornet himself, Van Williams.
You liked the comment, but i'm eager to hear your thoughts Rick? Especially the provenance of the numbers that you stated. If you let me know what the best email to send it to would be, i'm more than happy shoot the Budget Report I have in my collection over to you.
ok my comment has nothing to do with their salaries but the actors who were paid $260.00 it reminded me of salary for the movie HALLOWEEN oh the original HALLOWEEN staring Jamie Lee Curtis. There were two actor who played Michael Myers was Tony Moran he is the brother of the late actor Erin Moran who played Joanie from Happy Day, he felt this movie was going to be a flop a joke he asked them to give him a check for i believe it was only $150.00 and then to leave him alone he wanted nothing to do with this movie he did not want to sign any thing for residuals even refused to take credit if a Michael Myers mask was sold he could of gotten some cash for that I had purchased one of those mask and I heard that it was originally a william shatner mask that had been turned inside out hmmmm maybe Shatner should get some cash for it too
Reliving my childhood, thanks. It would have been a nice touch if you knew the box office income and had added that in the story. Again, thanks for the video.
I think one reason Burgess Meredith made so much more money than did the other villains was that he was on screen more than were his cohorts. Lee Meriwether may have received less than her cohorts because she was a "replacement" for Julie Newmar who was unavailable for this movie as she was filming another movie in London, "Monsieur Lecoq."
like the others have said...certainly not surprised at the money Burgess Meredith made as an already established actor...he probably made much more in Rocky as the manager.
Much as I love each actor/villain, they definitely made BM's Penguin the Big Bird of the quartet. Dunno why. But, they all got stuff to do, so it's all good.
Could you do a follow up video ,Rick for the Guest Stars , eg Victor Bueno ( King tut ) Milton Berle ( Louie the Lilac ) to mention a couple , please ?
The pay for these ACTORS would be about right, When you consider Clint Eastwood was doing his spaghetti western in Italy. He got 20 thousand a movie. Think about it for that type of money you could have bought 2 or three houses with that.!!
A lot depended on each of the individual’s Agent, and what they could bargain for, perhaps? I’m talking about the big players, not the smaller “fill ins”.
Ok my question is how much did this movie make in theaters? Also if the budget was $1.5mil (almost) wouldn't they have to make twice as much in theaters? At least $3 million in sales, right?
According to the inflation calculator in the year 1966 $1,500,000.00 is equivalent of $14,438,675.00 in 2020. The $3,000,000.00 is equivalent of $28,877,350.00.
Was this a made for tv movie or a major release in theatres? Also, was this film made before the tv show, during its run or after the Tv series was cancelled?
off the top of his head imo. or he WOULD give his references. He just gave us an inflation math calculation that he could build a show around. @ 10:45 ish "after reviewing production reports". can we see a PDF of this report he has?
There is at least one good internet money conversion calculator. However, it’s important to understand that that’s only part of the story because many things came along later (eg., commercial microwave ovens, home computers) that would not have been available in the early 60’s.

I am surprised at Burgess's salary. I am even more surprised that the Caesar was not paid an equal amount. Almost everyone else I would have bumped up just slightly. You mentioned that one actor salary was 96,000 I would have made it a hundred even. I definitely would have bumped up the man who played Alfred salary.
Great comment! Remember the 96,000 was a conversion to today’s worth so the amounts are strange since there’s a conversion. The original amounts are more natural
Pretty interesting. Just a suggestion, since you are already showing the text on-screen of the actor's 1966 actual and 2019 equivalent salaries, you don't need to read all the 2019 salaries. Further, you certainly don't need to read the cents. Since you used an inflation factor to come to today's dollars, the number of cents is totally irrelevant.

MsBackstager I’m pretty sure MB was only seen in the opening of the movie.
MsBackstager: You're right; each star's salary was based on his/her resume. That's why they have an agent, to negotiate appropriate salaries. As for Adam West, he had supreme leverage, knowing that not only did the producers desperately want him for the film, there is no "Batman" movie without.....Batman!
Burgess Meridith was fantastic in, Of Mice and Men. Watch that movie and you will understand why he got paid well.
Don't hate me I was trying to be a do-gooder! lol
Hey Rick
Thank you for this.
@@ricknineg
Thank you so much for answering again Rick, I did not think to look in your description.
Take care 🙂
Star🎭 power brings in the audience and brings in the $$$$
I wonder how much Mr. Meredith got for his role as Mickey in the Rocky movies
400 Million I believe
Darrell Hall lol
I don't think they cared about how much they made, cause you can see they were are all having such a blast together in making the show.
I didn't even know a movie was made I thought it was a series without a movie
Burgess had a smart manager,, that simple,,
Excellent!
Thank you
It don't make sense that Burgess Meredith made 35k while the other villains made 16k or less. Experience does count...
ok my comment has nothing to do with their salaries but the actors who were paid $260.00 it reminded me of salary for the movie HALLOWEEN oh the original HALLOWEEN staring Jamie Lee Curtis.
I don't think there were any box office numbers. If I remember correctly, it was a made for TV movie.
@@MarkMikelVideos The movie hit the big screen
Some of that really surprised me.
Makes me want to know how much the film made
...Probably still making... I bought this DVD not too long ago!!
Bluebeard was directly interacting with the lead Batman perhaps called for a higher rate!
Interesting fact. The Invisible Man was made for $7,000,000.00 which in 1966 money would be $866,235.49.
Burgess was a very popular movie star and has done countless movies and tv shows
like the others have said...certainly not surprised at the money Burgess Meredith made as an already established actor...he probably made much more in Rocky as the manager.
Much as I love each actor/villain, they definitely made BM's Penguin the Big Bird of the quartet. Dunno why. But, they all got stuff to do, so it's all good.
Holy pay inequality, Batman!
Outlier!
Could you do a follow up video ,Rick for the Guest Stars , eg Victor Bueno ( King tut ) Milton Berle ( Louie the Lilac ) to mention a couple , please ?
Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb
The voice of the President was Van Williams AKA The Green Hornet
Didn't Reginald Denny get beat up in the LA riots years ago? 😆
William Dozier was the narrator and the executive producer of Batman and The Green Hornet T V serious.
Burgess Meredith was a huge box office draw at the time. Big star since the 1930s.
Someday you just can't get rid of a bomb!!!!
I think that ether stirr or pluto should come up with a Batman channel and a Lucy channel
I would be happy with any of their salaries, thanks for sharing another great video Rick ☺🙂
So, did any of the actors make money later due to reruns and the Internet? There was a big lawsuit about this wasn’t there?
Rick I'm like so impressed with your knowledge
I subscribed to ur channel and will tell all my friends to do so as well
DUDE, NOT SURPRISED PENGUIN MADE THAT MUCH, HE WAS THE BIGGER STAR. LOOK AT HIS RESUME OF FILMS!!
How many films did the penguin make?
@ 10:45 ish "after reviewing production reports".
can we see a PDF of this report he has?
Rick
references please
poor Madge Blake. She got screwed over big time. And of course Adam West made a crap ton of money. He's the mfn Batman for God's sake lol
Was this a made for tv movie or a major release in theatres? Also, was this film made before the tv show, during its run or after the Tv series was cancelled?
It hit the big screen after the 1st season
SAG payscales. Seniority, resume, etc determine the pay.
I'm very curious how do you find out the amounts?
@Too Wun I am just curious to see how he confirms the amounts that's all. I'm sure we call all do a simple search but no confirmation.
off the top of his head imo.
or he WOULD give his references.
Burgess Meredith was a movie star at that time. It makes sense that he would have made that kind of money
met Frank, a wonderful person
HI RICK
VERY INTERESTING VIDEO,,, AMEN!!!
IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY?WOULD YOU KINDLY DO A VIDEO ON THE SALARIES OF THE STAR'S OF THE ACTUAL "BATMAN" SERIES PLEASE?!
AND IF YOU HAVE, COULD YOU LET ME KNOW WHERE TO FIND SAID VIDEO?!THANKS!!!
PATRICO DE SOUZA!!! Yes, just google Rick Nineg Batman salaries and it’ll come up
@@ricknineg GREAT AND AS I SAID I FOUND YOUR VIDEO AND GREAT AS USUAL,,, AMEN!!!
AND ONCE AGAIN COULD YOU KINDLY DO A VIDEO ON THE SALARIES OF THE "BRADY BUNCH", " THE FACTS OF LIFE ", " THE JEFFERSON'S " AND "ALL IN THE FAMILY" PLEASE?!!
THANK 🙏💕 YOU AND HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!
@@ricknineg Thank you.
I would give Lee Meriwether 90,000 in 2020 dollars for some 1965 Cat woman.
