- Foxanne had a stay of execution and remains on the HubNut fleet. I finally tackled the front wheel bearing adjustment, but didn't get very far... Thankfully Tim at www.cambrianclassics.co.uk was on hand to show me how its done...

Well that took me back 30 years or more! The joys of 'feeling' wheel bearings, castellated nuts and split pins. Lovely! Seem to remember those hub nut covers come off more easily if the wheel is off first, at least as far as access is concerned.
a screwdriver helps to lever the cap off too 👍
Me too 👍 The front bearings on my old 1969 VW Beetle had a large washer that needed to move slightly with resistance.

My first car was a Vx Nova that had taper bearings on the rears. I cut my car tinkering teeth on adjusting the things. Ok, the garage pointed out that were too loose but it learnt me how these sort of things work. Nearly 30 years later and garages have rarely had any money out of me!

I recently bought adjustable pliers from Knipex, 45 euro spent. It hurt but I have to say they are very very good ones. It get the job done and saved me from frustration. We all struggle with money nowadays, but having bad tools makes you pay more in the end. Mind you not all tools have to be expensive, there are decent tools for less money than the big brands and are even better..
Cool to have a friend with tools and experience who can help out to get a job done and applauding your dedication to keep the HubNut classic fleet members in working order.
You need to jack it up and take the wheel off first. Then you can get a screwdriver at a reasonable angle to tap/lever it out.

Re bore, powermax pistons, road & race camshaft, nitrided crank and blueprinting all round should do the trick when Foxies engine is rebuilt. Decent Webber twin choke and job will be a good un !
Many a person has increased their engines output but tended to forget the most important thing, upgrade the brakes. Not always possible on a drum braked vehicle that has not been produced for years without a complete front running gear change and modification, then it loses originality and may cost the earth.

Foxanne as a Sport Utility Vehicle was definitely a snortle moment.
We were always at loggerheads with NZ WOF inspectors over wheel bearing play. It got to the stage where I would tighten them to no play, get it tested them loosen them off by one castle on the nut...
Can't believe Mr Up 'n' Down hasn't found a buyer for his Fox. Things of simplicity + beauty.

You have some interesting material coming up, finishing the daihatsu, engine swap on 2cv, injectors on matiz……all of which i am looking forward to watching.
The battle with the hub covers, usually there is a rim so you can put a screwdriver in between to pry the cap off. All dents are against you to grab it with pliers, luckily Tim has more experience with this. Have a nice ride with Foxanne.
I have a vague recollection that the method for setting up the rear wheel bearings (tapered rollers) on my Renault 16 was to torque the bearing nut up to 25lb-ft and then back it off a quarter of a turn before locking it in place! The front wheel bearings on my Datsun Sunny were done the same way as Foxanne.
Castellated nuts on wheel bearings, those were the days! I used to use a bent nail if the split pin got destroyed . . .
Good to see Foxanne will be going on an outing you have a lot on your plate the fun of owning a large fleet of cars

Also most grease caps have a small centre hole where you can screw a self tapper in and pull it with pliers etc.
Forget about 'etc'. I doubt if Hubnut has a slide hammer.
@@mbak7801 Yes, I was going to say..."or slide hammer" but didn't want to overcomplicate things.
Some do but they are not a good idea as dirt can get into the bearing so you have to make sure the hole is plugged when the car is being driven.

Nice to see Foxan back out. I have been running Reliant three wheelers for many years. So I have just one small bit of advice. They are much happier at speeds in the under 55 MPH region than going faster. This way they run better & do not waste so much oil when their engines get older. Sorry if it gets a bit boring with a four-wheeler, but it is less hairy in the Robin's & Rialto's, which then become very nice to drive.
By the way fitting a Balister start makes them much better starters. This is a 9 volt coil, plus a balister resistor in a ceramic holder. You switch the resistor out of circuit as you turn on the starter motor.
Yeah, 50mph is generally my max in Foxanne. She has always started very well.
Hubnut, mechanics will use experience to adjust bearings, but you are supposed to torque them up, check end float with DTi, then drop split pin in.
Over the years I've found doing them by feel and plenty of wheel rotations works best, had a fairly in depth conversation with a Timken tech guy who agreed with me as the torque figure was a happy compromise.
@@MrOvershoot You have to watch temperature of bearing too when doing.
Roxane is as rare as hens teeth she will be saved because of this channel.
As the owner of a Spifire I well know the difficulties of removing the bearing caps and have a simple solution. With the cap in place get a hammer and a flat blade screwdriver and create a short indented groove parallel to and just inside the raised lip. Be gentle with the hammer Mr H, you want a groove, not a hole. Now you can simply put the screwdiver into the groove and lever it off. Plus it will still be there the next time you need to remove it and you don't need to keep buying replacements.

Nice one Ian, if the first hammer does not succeed and the bigger one doesn't either, phone a friend. It's always great to see Foxanne being readied for a trip. Looking forward to the video of the classic car show. A good call on the cam belt for the Berlingo (we need a name for her), failed cam belts can be terminal for an otherwise good engine.
Gripping the dust/grease cap too tightly defeats the object as it will spread out of circular 90⁰ to the pressure applied thus making it harder, assuming, of course, it is still true. A clean and slight filing where the grips grip will give them more grip.

If the bearing caps are the same mushroom-shaped design that my old Imp had, I used to remove them by spinning the wheel (car jacked up of course) and tapping on the cap/hub joint with the cross side of a cross-pein hammer. Walked the cap out a treat.
At Skoda I was taught by the Estelle Rally team to use a standard set of pliers to adjust a the hub bearings, If you think of Lenny Henry saying "kotanger my friends" (cant spell that) but with a pair of pliers between his thumb and little finger and just nipping the nut up with that little force you could put on with your hand and pop the split pin through the nearest hole.
I always used a wood chisel or big screwdriver to prise these out. Always took the wheel off first though. Remember, if all else fails, read the instuctions!
Oh no! Timing chain rattle? That is not good. If you don't deal with that quickly, the engine will grenade!

I well remember getting my Marina back from a service and the 'mechanic' had driven a screwdriver through the grease cap to get it off, but had then reused it. I was not amused.
Also much, much later having an almighty row with the MOT guy who stated categorically that any play in the front hub bearings was a fail, he would not even accept the authority of the official Leyland repairs operations manual which clearly stated 1/8 play at wheel edge, minimum.
It surely must be Belinda the Berlingo? You could take her for a trip to the Lake District - Maybe visit Carlisle? Via Hexham on the way. Because Hexham is a place on Earth!

Fact , the caps are actually the hub caps ! What people wrongly call the hub caps ( usually chrome ) which cover them, are really called knave plates , but this term seems to have been lost in time.

Don't think about changing the door hinges as they are the same as a mk1 or 2 classic mini and you will pay £80-£90 for a second hand pair! There are replacement alloy hinges at about £40 a pair but these are prone to break.

Generally to adjust you tighten gently. Then back off one flat on the nut. Same for reliant and big Scania lorrys. Modern stuff is preloaded Iveco 3.5 tonne pickup front hubs for example etc yerk it up jobs.
Taper bearings take higher side loads of radial tyres side wall flex. On ball bearings on classics the radial tyre put extra side loads thus wearing out faster. But with crossply on ball bearings wear is ok as the tyres are stiffer in the side wall and higher slip less flex and less side loads.
A freind had an American car who was constantly fitting bearings and the above situation radial tyres on single race ball bearings.
I upgraded on my mini van to taper races on the rear doing away with the spacer between the two bearings.
Another thing that can cause excessive bearing wear is bad body to drive train earths. Gearbox to body earth starter. That can cause pitting as current passes thru shorting on the bearing hardens surface.

It's a tricky one. I destroyed a wheel bearing on a Golf by doing the nut up too tight, because at the time I had no idea about taper bearings... Suspect the tolerances are a little tighter on a more modern Volvo than a Fox though.

Are there any modern electric vehicles with motors that might be made to fit Foxane's gearbox? I don't mean stupid 400bhp Tesla motors that everyone seems to fit to everything, so they can do 0-62 faster than a 911 turbo, I mean something in the 40-60hp range. It would seem an ideal conversion for a local delivery van like Foxane, rather than another petrol engine.
