"Those who are about to die, we salute you" No matter when I wanted to play the game, I always had to watch this intro first. Still one of the best game intros around, especially with the music. I always loved the "Chase" sign 1:21 it had something :)
I don't care what generation this game is from, what it's rated, or how good it was, this is one of the most spine-tingling intros I've ever witnessed. I played this game A LOT back when it originally came out, and now I know where my love for metal started! The seed was planted with Carmageddon's soundtrack (thank you Fear Factory!)
@@MilesFox92 well, in fact, there is an in-game purchase, namely, to open all the tracks and cars, but it costs a paltry amount of money, and even more so, it is absolutely not necessary, since the game can be completed anyway
Played the game before I ever heard of a band called fear factory. I watched the intro countless times just for the music. Shazam wasn't a thing back then so I figured it was game soundtrack. Sometimes later on a school class trip someone had the demanufacture album with him and I for whatever reason connected this sound to carmageddon I was blown away. While everybody was away and partying I was listening the whole night all by myself to this album on repeat. It's my favorite album of all times. Love it till today. Ah the memories!
"Attention, all competitors! This is your 1-minute warning! I repeat, 1-minute to race commencement! Members of the public, you now have 1-minute to reach minimum safe distance!" "Okay, ladies and gentlemen fire em' up!"
"Those who are about to die, we salute you..." So, that's what he said. Back at my Carmageddon days, I was never able to understand that. BTW, is it normal to let nostalgic tears roll while watching this?!
Ten vehicles appeared in Carmageddon intro. These vehicles are: Red Eagle (Max Damage), Volkswerker (Stig O'Sore), Towmeister (Psycho Pitbull), Cleaver (Val Hella), Stiffshifter (The Brothers Grimm), Fraud Broko (OK Stimpson), Leadpumper (Agent Orange), The Twister (Screwie Lewie), Hevy Impaler (Ed Hunter) and Razorback (Auto Scum). Razorback seen in the intro is different from the one in Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now. They have both different cars and different drivers.
Took me awhile to notice this, but it's a cool detail. All of the vehicles are very animated. They have cool effects, sound bytes, extra accessories, bouncin' around, decals on the bumper, etc.... But then, when they show Max Damage's car, the sound effects stop. His car is almost frozen. He barely moves his head when they show the cockpit. When the countdown happens, he's the first one to floor it. Thus, despite lunatics such as Screwie Lewie and Val Hella, the (initially) calm and calculated Max is the most psychotic out of everyone.
This still ranks as one of the top 10 best intro's I've ever seen in a videogame. Perhaps not in visual quality, but the game mood is set off so damn well through the hardcore music and the cars "equipment".
Oh hell, does this ever bring back memories. Thinking of games like this almost makes me a little sad, as this is from the days when games were actually made just for FUN. Not just flashy graphics, or what some market analysts think will sell best, or what can keep people addicted long enough to milk money from people like some ex-wife. FUN, remember that? This game can also be credited for discovering my love of Fear Factory, and all things post-apocalyptic / CyberPunk. I brake for Rainbows
I know this is kind of a meme, and gets thrown around a lot, but to me, Carmageddon is really the "dark souls" of racing games, not so much difficulty wise (it's not that difficult, and pretty easy to cheese through), but it's got that kind of gameplay that... once you get it... you GET it. It's a tremendously fun game to master. Dem car physics are so unique and fun to play around with...
Ya man, I lived in this game ha good take. Were so many complaints on this one and Reincarnation but if ya get the hang of it was rewarding gameplay I found too.
Damn, I miss this game so much! :( The game was strictly racing/demolition/civ-mower. None of the missions or other stuff, just out-race, out-crash, or out-kill your opponents. No guns either- your *car* was the weapon. Post-apocalyptic with a sense of humor, I wish I still had this.
See, they don't make intros like this anymore. Back in the day when a game's graphics were as pixelated as carmageddon's were, you only had intros such as this to drool over graphics wise. Maybe that's why so much effort was put into creating them in the first place.
I could only wish someone did remaster this game. Not changing anything only graphics. Sadly world of 2023 would scream how brutal it is and cancel it before even release... :/
I had the zombie version of Carmageddon 1 when I was 7. (17 now) I still love it. The intro was a little bit different. I preffer Carmageddon 1 instead of Carmageddon 2 because it was much darker, more raw. And the music was better.
hahahaha i used to play this game with my brotther and thought it was really funny. Naturally our parents didn't know......i was too young for this stuff. Most people dont have a clue what i'm on about when i mention carmageddon. Glad i found this....i'm obviously not the only one who played it lol.
Doom, Carmageddon, Command and Conquer. The good days of video games are behind us. We can only hope game companies will realize the error of their ways and grow some balls. Carmageddon = Greatest racing game ever.
One of the best games ever, so gratifying getting to kill all your opponents to win the race, not to mention the pedestrian slaughter, awesome, needs to have a sequel.
Funny thing I've watched this so many times, there are some minor goofs like the biggest one being that the closeups of the cars shown (for example the wheel with the lightining bold, which I assume belongs to electric blue) dont actually represent the cars on the starting grid. if you go frame by frame after the cars set off you won't see electric blue anywhere.
I boght this game back in i think it was 1996 I was 15 years old. I couldnt stop playing this game. Best intro ever. You can find anything on youtube, booya.
Carmageddon don't need a story line. It is just a fun way to cool down after a day of work. Just sit and get all your frustration out on the walking pedestrians of the city, dessert or whatever place you want to ride. You don't have to archieve anything in the first Carmageddon. That is why it was such a great game. Very relaxing and to put a smile on your face. (when you hit a granny). Not like the other games of carmageddon. The missions and some morals ruined it. Forever.
The remake of death race 2000 (which was the inspiration for this game) actually does something similar. The movie is death race 3000 with Jason Statham, check it out.
In some countries, Germany and Brazil, and initially also the UK, the game was deemed to violent was not allowed past the cencoring boards. So SCI developed a cencored version, where all pedestrians were replaced with zombies. The ban was later revoked in the UK. I assume that what you have is the cencored version, although I have never seen it. I believe - if you are interested and still own the CDs - that it was possible to download a fix to restore the original content.
@MikeWiseGSI Actually that "Those who are about to die we salute you" is even older than that. It comes from Ancient Roman Empire were that was said to gladiators before gladitoriar fight.
It's weird looking back and knowing that this video is what got me into Fear Factory. I've spent a year trying to track down an affordable copy and a computer to play it on.
@kazimann I had a copy of it. I remember travelling up to Newry to get it. Back then there was still the huge army barracks and check point on the border.
Ztipe, Carmageddon was originaly ment to be the sequal to Death Race 2000. They lost their license to make it but they continued with development naming it Carmageddon though they were free to make it how ever they wished.

Yeah the intro was crazy good to get you hyped for playing the game. Had the same thing with Gran Turismo 4
That Hit N Run license plate warms my heart
I've almost never cut off the intro. Even on the Android version now
The intro song is Zero signal by fear factory.
That brings back memories, almost religious watching it again. Most badass intro in a game - ever

This never gets old, still remember the first time seeing this after finally successfully booting the game
2016 and still one of best intros ever
Exhaust fumes spewing out into the sky, Engines redlining, Hi-beams blinding everyone, Hell yeah, this is awesome.
Agreed, even at 2017 with this game being now 20 years old, still a classic 👌🏼
And even in 2019 it remains one of the best intro's ever
Very much agreed. I will say though, Gran Turismo 2's intro on the Arcade Disc is damn near the best too, but this is just killer.
Hmmm I'd say the intro of Red Alert 2 was the best for me but damn... this one really does come in second.
Back in the days when games were not bloated with this scourge known as lootboxes and microtransactions... oh the nostalgia
And even the mobile port doesn't have ads popping up every minute/progression that is really hard or slow without donating
Not to mention no online multiplayer. No need to play with dickheads, noobs or trolls.
@@alexrose9388 actually, this game did support networking albeit not in the way you describe (like CS:GO's matchmaking)

Fear Factory - Zero Signal
So carmegeddon is mortal kombat with cars then?
Welcome!

i agree but at least it was powered by a V-8 engine,

Fear Factory always has this great drumming sound, sounding like a car engine. Perfectly fitting the theme 🤘
