General Choi is like the CEO of a tech company who says, “we should have touch screens on all our devices.” Then all the engineers and computer nerds actually make that happen, after which the ceo proudly proclaims, “I invented the touch screen!” Of course, to make that truly accurate you’d also have to posit a rival tech company that created their own touch screen and got it accepted into the olympics. 😛

Choi comes across as really creepy, minute little changes (most not necessary), wearing shoes in the training area, etc. At times, he referred to himself as “the Jesus Christ” of tae Kwon Do, if that wasn’t creepy enough. In his first English book on Tae Kwon Do, he claimed it had a heritage going back 500 or more years, totally and completely false. It comes from Japanese Karate, with five Koreans who learned Japanese Karate, four in Japan (one being Choi himself) and one in Manchuria. It was Choi himself as a ranked General which he was given upon his return from Japan (was a low level officer in the Japanese army), that allowed him to take control of tae kwon do (an invented name). He didn’t like the Korean president (who was later eventually murdered by a close associate) believing himself higher in rank and seniority. Thus,
being pushed aside he immigrated to Canada. He chose North Korea to further his crazed ambition to control Tae Kwon Do! North Korea, are you kidding me! That was his way to try to be relevant. So now, the international ‘control’ of WKF is a North Korean entity. How does that fly in the States? This history is now available in an academic journal from a South Korean University).
